_Griphin_ User Info... | OK, here's a short but sweet gig report. It was awesome, and really hard to figure out who was the better band, everyone busted their ass, and I really appreciated not only the bands who played, but the people who showed up!!! Here's the results... #1: The Span (125 dB) #2: Sweathogs (121 dB) #3: Making Mischief (120 dB) #4: Fully Loaded (119 dB) Making Mischief got my vote for funnest band, and best crowd response (man, the honey's in the front row made it worth while). Sweathogs got my vote for coolest set. In any case, all the bands involved were cool, lets hope we can get some networking happen. BTW: Even if the bands didn't win $1,000.00 they get credit for future gigs playing at Lucky or something like that. Nuff said, peace... - Tue, 2 Dec 2003 10:31pm

A Mischief Maker User Info... | Hey this is Mitch from making mischief, we had an awesome time at the show last night. We are so new to the scene that my favorite part was playing with these other bands. Congrats to The Span, don't mind losing to those guys at all. We also really liked The Sweathogs, Self Inflicted and The Whether. Everyone else was awesome too, but these guys put on awesome shows. Here's to having more of these shows, the crowd was incredible and I am proud to say we have some hot fans!! Anyway, I hope everyone had a good time regardless of the final result. I heard this battle was quite a bit friendlier than the one at Soundgarden, but I wasn't here for that. Anyway, thanks to whoever came out to the shows, see you soon. - Wed, 3 Dec 2003 7:08am

dirty girl User Info... | Sweathogs fuckin' rocked!!!! But they need more slutty, cute girls as their fan base. They would've won then. Still, I hear they're havin' a kegger regardless....gotta love them boys! Other bands....well, not my style but they put on a good performance nonetheless. And Making Mischief...well...I think I need to go to UVIC...lots of hot chicks jumpin' up and down to your stuff....too bad about the stage-divin' girl who bashed her head up. - Wed, 3 Dec 2003 5:24pm
james User Info... | I thought the show was really good, there were lots of people there all night right up until the results were announced at 1:30 or so, and all the bands put on a good show. Here's my take on the bands. Fully Loaded: Were pretty solid, and put on an entertaining set, but I didn't get why they had a DJ in their band, it just seemed to really distract me from their songs, or maybe I was distracted by their totally hot girl bass player. The Sweathogz: Tight, loud, and played with a lot of confidence. The hockey fight at the end, although pretty rediculous, was entertaining. They looked like a band that was having a lot of fun on stage. The Span: They were fast, tight, heavy, yet really melodic at the same time. They had a lot of different sounding songs, and had really catchy vocal melodies. They seemed to have a ton of energy on stage, especially the guitarist who looked like he was having a 30 minute seizure, and the drummer was wicked. Making Mischief: Played kind of a pop punk set that was quite entertaining. Their singer had really good stage presence and they pulled off their songs pretty well for a band that announced it was only their second show. They should be given credit for keeping Lucky Bar pretty packed until 1:30 in the morning on a Tuesday night, something a lot of established bands in Victoria can't do. All in all, I had a great time at the show, all the bands were good and each got really good crowd response. - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 12:08pm
crispy User Info... | Gotta say there was a great turnout and the bar did stay fairly full right until the end. Although I don't know how The Span won the whole thing. The whole time they played I had to keep my fingers in my ears. The singers voice was so high it sounded like a poor rip off of Sting even some of their songs sounded like the Police. Someone else there was saying the same thing and I have to agree. As for who the real winners should of been I can't say the other bands were all there to compete and their performances showed it. Oh well this just proves that the way the winner was chosen is flawed. Number of friends in attendance doesn't equal a fair measure of talent. - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 12:34pm
Fred the Dragon User Info... | Ok, I hear this argument thrown around a lot that a new band should be commended for keeping a bar packed until 1:30am. No diss on Making Mischief, but it's a lot easier to convince all your friends to come down to your second show ever, than it is to convince those same friends to come to shows 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc. I don't base the success of a band on the audience of their first few shows. It's lasting power that's important, and drawing new fans. That being said, I've never heard Making Mischief, but I've only heard good things about them, and maybe this argument is totally bunk. - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 2:02pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | "Although I don't know how The Span won the whole thing" They won it by having the most people yelling at the decible meter, were you not paying attention to how the contest was run? "Number of friends in attendance doesn't equal a fair measure of talent" No one ever said the winner was going to be the most talented band. I do believe the the original announcement calling for bands on this contest was something along the lines of "is your band the next big thing, can you fake it" If the band you wanted to win didn't win, yell louder next time =) - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 2:29pm

Justin User Info... | who the fuck cares... its over now. and in my opinion the span is very deserving of first place, i would settle for them sounding like mars volta or at the drive in... but the police? Why is there so much complaining, it was fun and i'm sure everyone else there had a good time. - Fri, 5 Dec 2003 6:49am
Spidergoat User Info... | It's just too bad it wasn't like a real "Battle Royal" you know? Like at the end when they annaounce the winner, one of the other bands could break a chair over someones head and take the money. That would have been something. - Fri, 5 Dec 2003 7:31am
evilkleg User Info... | Having your friends yell is the best way to choose a winner, in my opinion. Otherwise bands have to rely on the "judges" to pick the best bands. Then you run into the problem of having the bar or the promoter choose these judges, only to have them vote against you if they happen to not like the genre a band is playing, regardless of talent. And if the judges happen to be friends of yours, let's face it, the other bands are doomed. - Fri, 5 Dec 2003 2:49pm
