Message Board > Show Reviews > Dimmu Bodom Nevermore Hypocisy |
-=LiquiD=- User Info... | Alright, so this show wasn't in Vic. But for the lineup for this show any true metalhead should have made the trip. Hypocriy opened the night, now I'm not a hypocrisy fan but last night didn't help things. Every song sounded the same and their quick 30min set was over Children of Bodom followed, they ripped shit up the mosh ruled, but they fucking played 5 songs... 30 fucking minutes. It was a joke.. Nevermore played a killer set, when they played Sound of Silence the whole place was going. Nevermore got a longer set, the CoB or Hypocrisy, but I'd sooner have seen more CoB then Nevermore. Dimmu Borgir opened their set with a killer lightshow, their set ripped the place apart, finally closing off the night with Stormblast and Mourning Palace. Their entire set was tight, they made it look easy. This was a show not to be missed, and if ya missed it you suck. - Tue, 2 Dec 2003 12:06pm
Jesse User Info... | Nick Barker and Jeff Loomis should start a band... that would be entertaining. - Tue, 2 Dec 2003 5:44pm
METALNECK User Info... | Yeah I wasn't a big fan of Hypocricy before, but they put on a decent show, enough to make me give them another listen to. I went for Children Of Bodom and so when they only played for 30 mins I was pretty choked. They fucking shredded and I am an even bigger fan then I was when I got there. Nevermore had a boring set. They played a couple songs that were good, but deffinately not even close to the level of Bodom and they played twice as long. I guess I was still too choked about Bodom's half hour set to really give it a chance. I saw the beginning of Dimmu Borgir's set and the ending as I had a COB record and the record label came up to me and said that they only made 500 copies and that none of them ever went up for sale. So I got to go back stage and meet all of the bands except Dimmu and got it signed and they gave me beer and shit as I hung out with Alexei. Alexei, the bass player, and I all went out for the last 20 mins of Dimmus set and I don't know if anyone noticed but the bass player headed straight into the pit to do some moshing. After dimmu I got pulled back stage again and I got to meet Nick Barker. He is a fat dude and its amazing that such a big guy can drum that fast. All and all though Dimmu sounded incredible and they were damn amazing. All and all I got my signed Bodom vinyl with a backstage pass going on the wall. I will try to put up my pics of the show and the ones I took backstage for your amusement and my bragging pleasure. - Wed, 3 Dec 2003 4:43am
David User Info... | Hypocrisy - awesome screams, but overall not a mind-blowing performance due to the aforementioned similar sound most the songs had; guitarist had lame hair Children of Bodom - totally fucking deadly; ripped my head off; banged my head, pumped my fist, sang along the whole time; although a longer set would have ruled, I was not disappointed because I never thought I would ever see them; the keyboard player was so much fun to watch play, he's amazing Nevermore - sucked shit; haggard; churned out unmemorable garbage for far longer than unmemorable garbage has any right to; they try to be heavy like the new-school when they weren't even any good at the old-school Dimm Borgir - pretty good, but sort of lazy stage presence at times and let's be honest, Nick's triggers really sounded like hell and his cymbals were too quiet, it was all bass drum and snare; very impressive playing on his part though; the boots ruled; Shagrath ruled Overall, I had an awesome time, except for Nevermore's set. I wanted to die the whole time they were playing, it was tedious and embarassing, but the rest was rad. - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 3:14pm
Mutilashawn User Info... | Unfortunately I couldn't make it to this show whatsoever. But, I have seen Hypocrisy and Dimmu before. Sad to hear that Hypocrisy wasnt't the greatest, mind you their new album is AN UTTER PIECE OF SHIT, but they were sweet when I saw them. Dimmu never fails live, of course there is no way in hell that they can replicate the sound they have produced on their last two albums live but they are so damn interesting to watch. All in all I wish I fucking went. Damn. - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 3:35pm
meat User Info... | heres my opinion -hipocracy- not bad -children of bodom- pretty sweet -nevermore- fucking horrid -dimmu borgir- awsome(they played mouring palace and that was the highlight for me) theres my 2 cents - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 6:50pm
SOS Jesse User Info... | I missed Hypocrisy's set cause I was outside huffing a joint and I came in when Bodom was playing. They fucking rule live, immaculate playing, insane keyboardist, insane lead riffs, fuck the whole damned band is insane! We ran into them at McDonalds after the show that was fucking hilarious. I hadn't heard much Nevermore before but they kicked ten kinds of ass. Their guitarist made 'wild child' leiho look like a farce. He shredded like the true master that he was. I guess that's why I loved them, their guitarist. Dimmu Borgir were pretty damned wicked, they really got the place going. I don't agree with the previous comment about weak stage presence, they were fuckin into it! Galder was going crazy and the bassist was tossing his bass around like mad! Barker rules as usual. Check out his work on Old Man's Child's new album, 'In Defiance of Existence', it's off the fucking wall! - Fri, 5 Dec 2003 10:44am

Akylore User Info... | The show ruled, I was overall pretty happy, I was in the front the whole time, start to finish, picking up my pictures today so that'll rock...anyways, HYPOCRISY: I've actually never been a big fan but they put on a good show (Roswell's a wicked tune.) The thing about this band is that they're kinda doomy anyways so it's not the kind of stuff where I expect crazy leadwork and technical shit, most doom stuff is meant to be slow or 'slower' or atmoshpheric. NEVERMORE: I like them now, actually. I was never into them before because 'Inside 4 walls' was the only song I heard from the BW&BK sampler and the BW&BK display made Warrel look like a dork so I never gave them a chance, but their new album is good and I really like 'Dreaming Neon Black' too. I think they put on a good show, like SOSJesse said, Jeff Loomis is a wicked guitar player, and when you think about it, Nevermore is almost like progressive doom. I don't know, maybe it's just because I've been depressed lately that I enjoy them, but when I'm in the mood for doom, I'm not in the mood for fast, battallion-paced brutal or epic shit. It's more for feeling, Nvermore has a lot of despair in their music, and I think they boost it up with catchy riffs and good lead work. Warrel's a wicked vocalist too. CHILDREN OF BODOM: Oh, fuck, what else can you say?!?! This band kicks 10 kinds of ass, although I wanted to see Dimmu more badly due to the 2002 fuck-up at the Wett-Bar, I'd have to say I was anticipating C.O.B. more for the simple reason that they were actually here!!!! I don't think they even fucked up at all, I thought the rhythm guitar was a little quiet, but overall very tight musicianship. I think C.O.B.'s the only band that can get away with the cheesy shit due to the blatant glam influence in their music, but all the power to them, they rule!!!! DIMMU BORGIR: They fucking slayed too!!! I thought they had really wicked stage prescence, Vortex as usual blew me away with that note he held off 'Progenies of the Great Apocalypse.' Galder looked at me 2 different times and went "C'MON!" since I was one of the only long hairs up front losing it with the windmill-action, hilarious shit. It was too bad that you couldn't see Mustis or Nick though, but all around, good sound, good set, I have no complaints whatsoever. This was by far the best show I had been to for a long time, and I'm grateful that venues like the Commodore are recognizing good talent and bringing it here to BC. Case fucking closed. If you weren't there, you missed out. - Fri, 5 Dec 2003 11:34pm
Alexi "wildchild" Laiho is the sexiest man alive User Info... | Neverbore is a fuckin joke, i don't care if they do have an amazing guitar player, total joke. Their singer had a nice smile though, i wonder why no one responded to his circle pit commands. - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 10:07am
Perpetual_Burn User Info... | Most reviews covered it for me. Awesome show up until a crowdsurfer with Steel-Heels booted me in the head midway through th Dimmu set, Dont remember too much after that.......But Bodom Slayed, that's for sure. PS: Stay away from anywhere in Vancouver that charges lees than 89 cents for a slice of Pizza. The roaches almost stole it away from me..... - Sat, 6 Dec 2003 10:14am
SentencedtoBurn User Info... | Hypocrisy: decent; I enjoyed them, pretty boring but then again, pretty 80's. Children of Bodom: decent, pretty cheesy. Reminds me of video game music you'd find in a racing game. Better then Nevermore, that's not saying much though. Nevermore: rad guitar player, incredibly lame band. Dimmu: fucking rad. Barker was hidden so I couldn't watch him very well. No "Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny" and that was quite the letdown. - Sun, 7 Dec 2003 6:06pm
Akylore User Info... | I took a lot of wicked pictures at the show, you can check them out in the forums (Member Pictures) section at http://www.secondshifters.com You'll have to register as a member though (no it doesn't cost money-it's basically just like registering in this livevictoria.com website) to view them since it's under 'member pictures' in the forums, but if you're a fan of any of the bands, check it out!!!! I was in the front row the whole time!!!! - Mon, 8 Dec 2003 1:33pm
