I was skeptical as I walked into a deserted Oak Bay Teen Centre annex. The only sign off inhabitants was the blare of warming up guitars and cymbal crashes. The Habitat played their much practiced set to a small crowd of teenagers and a couple twenty-somethings. As The Habitat worked their way through the set, you could still tell that this was a young band working out the kinks in the songs. I spotted the one and only Connor across the room as the band was putting away it's gear.
Connor, was indeed going to play tonight.

Maurice rattled me from the very first visual set up; A five piece, with a keyboardist is an interesting take on the local rock band instrumentation. The solid grooves and well orchestrated instrumentals let the melodies and chording come through the sometimes rough sounds. The band sounded like they were creating a piece of music, not replaying a rehearsed set of clich material. I stood right in the centre of the hard groove that went through the room, taken by the musicianship of the young band. After they had gone through their varied set (including slower ballad-like tunes to hard groove dischord) one crowd member commented on the guitarist looking like he was a channel of god by the way he was setting fire to his fretwire.

Fully Loaded was a well put together act of swallowable pop rock. Great hooks and catchy turntablism made it like an alternative take on Nickleback for me.

Make no mistake. The stars of the evening were Maurice.
I look forward to another encounter.

I missed The Habitat's set, but those guys never fail to impress.

The second band (Maurice? I thought it was Jobe) played an intense set. Great guitar solos. Awesome lyrics/vox. Very tight drums & bass. The keys provided to make this a rather unique rock act. Their stage presence was awesome, full of energy & their tunes were extremely catchy with powerful hooks.

I was only around for half of Fully Loaded's set, but the crowd seemed to lose energy and became sort of apathetic. They played really well, as usual, just lacking the energy that I've seen from them before, which was probably due to the audience kind of slowing down a bit, & the guitarist being sick. Can't wait for their CD to come out, though.

Was an excellent night, & I'd love to see Maurice again hopefully sometime soon. Anyone take up their offer of 'buttering' the band members after the show? - Sat, 29 Nov 2003 1:54am

the habitat was alright, I've seen them play way better. Good band, I'll see them again

jobe, or carpet as I last saw them as, where phenominal. This is one amazing band, proabably the most talented and original local bands I've ever seen, and I've seen alot, trust me. I was blown away, captivated by the music. I've only seen once before, and on both ocassions, they've been outstanding. If you haven't seen these guys, see them.

fully loaded was a disapointement as usual. I'm sorry if anyone, anyone likes this band, but the music they play is just so...boring. It's ripoff, pop music put into a blender, formula crap.

(Every song sounds the same = formula)

These guys guys and girl are an unispiring lot with a singer that is way too angry for the type of music, a guitarist that solos the same note every song(or for that matter, twice a song), a DJ that is good but out of place, and a bass player that looks bored.

I recomend you skip FL's next show. - Sat, 29 Nov 2003 7:22am

Wierd little venue to play in first of all. The minute i stepped in the door, the girl at the ticket table asked for 10$, and i turned around and left. But eventually the price came down to 6, which was much more reasonable.

The Habitat always puts on a good energetic set. Although they didn't sound their best, they always make it up by cracking the stupitest jokes on stage, and I've never seen them fail to get the crowd moving. They're always worth the money to see.

Maurice were really. Although I really hate emo, they sounded very tight and everything seemed together. Great drumming and guitar solos. Watch out for these boys in the future, although their type of music is more relaxing then Habitat's rock, they really know their stuff.

Fully Loaded was indeed a bore. Each song i heard sounded exaclty like the song before it, with the same grunge rock vocals, and the same bass lines. Their music is that which you could fall asleep to, it seems all the same. And none of it sems quite original, they have no unique sound, and they definently lack energy to put on an exciting set.

All in all, i thought Habitat had the most energy, Maurice had the best sound, and Fully Loaded had the most boring show I've seen in a while. - Sat, 29 Nov 2003 8:21am

Its cool to see they're doing shows at that little anex again. I hadn't seen anything happen there since Burden/One Good Word rocked it like 2 years ago. Hopefully Katie, the youth co-ordinator at the center, can get it going and convince the higher up's to not be quite as anal as they have been in the past with the space, as its a fun place to see a show since it fills up so fast there can be good energy even with a small crowd. - Sat, 29 Nov 2003 12:19pm

I thought the show was pretty sweet all around. Little bit pricey but fun nonetheless.

Habitat is always fun and energetic.

Jobe absolutely floored me. It's absolutely incredible to think that these guys are all younger than 20 (or so i was told) and can still create such an amazing sound. I especially liked the cover of Norwegian Wood. It's hard to do justice to a beatles song and they really did!

Fully Loaded was well... they were alright. I can't believed they'd waste a song like Lucky on a soundcheck though, that's my fave. Oh yeah one more thing, 4x12's are a little intense for such a small venue. The point is to please your crownd, not deafen and give them headaches

Anyway fun stuff, nice little venue, good bands. - Sun, 30 Nov 2003 7:15am

As usual, I was impressed by The Habitat. They're a solid group of aspiring musicians that always play an energetic set. They're going places.

The stars of the night were unmistakably Maurice (or Jobe, or Carpet). They were an incredible band that just seemed to come from out of nowhere. They had more than $10,000 worth of equipment on stage, but knew how to use it nonetheless. I definately recommend checking this band out.

Fully Loaded was pretty shaky. I've seen them several times, and have left me feeling empty on each occasion. Each and every one of their songs sound the same and lack spirit. Did they organize the show? Because they shouldn't have been headlining. - Sun, 30 Nov 2003 4:44pm

Yea next time either Maurice or The Habitat plays i'm totally there. Don't think Maurice plays that often, but Habitat sure does. As for Fully Loaded, don't think I'll be at their next...or their next...or their next... - Sun, 30 Nov 2003 5:54pm

yeah, fully shoudn't have headlined, a 20-30 minute set would have been good for a band like thiers. Maurice should have headlined the show. - Mon, 1 Dec 2003 4:21pm

That was a pretty fun show. I love how The Habitat can always step up and make people enjoy their music. They're always fun to watch, and prob why they have a big fanbase. Maurice, on the other hand, lacked a little stage presence, but they were quite amazing as far as sound goes. They were very well balanced that night, and had a cool emo sound. Especially liekd the piano. Fully Loaded seemed to have a grunge rock sound, and there seems to be some Fully dislikers out there. Well, i might have to jump on that wagon, cause frankly they weren't any fun to watch, except for good drumming, their music is just to repetitive for my liking. They sound good for aobut one or two songs, then you realize it's all the same. Fun show never-the-less.

yeah i was the person who got that place started up in 1997. The reason they are so anal is because of a band I booked into there called hiroshima 8:16. Their singer starting breathing fire which turned the fire alarms on which brought the fire dept out. They told the person who ran the place that she should have know it was going to happen because they were singing about it the whole time, she replied back that the song previous they had been singing about having sex with there mother and should she have expected that too! They also had firearms on stage. I never got to see any of this go down though because i had pnemonia that night, so my friend josh ran the door. - Thu, 4 Dec 2003 8:01pm

To bad some band had to fuck up the reputation for putting on shows at Teen Centre, cause it's actually a very cool venue cause it's always packed, and you can pack it pretty full! - Fri, 5 Dec 2003 10:31am
