Overall a great show, the turnout was excellent and for the second time this year I managed to pay all the bands (I do hope I gave money to all the right people...). Great to see everyone going berserk for SI (playing extremely well) though I had a minor heart attack when that light got kicked and nearly came down and I had to go fix it back into place. Hope Against blew my mind, I can't wait to see them again tonight in Nanaimo. A few minor quibbles with the obnoxious drunken behaviour of a few kids who thought they shouldn't have to pay and support a touring band, and the fact that the loud drunks outside may AGAIN cost us this venue (maybe the NO BOOZE sign on the posters isn't clear enough - this is an elementary school we're renting after all!). Everyone I can't stress enough to please do your drinking before or after the show, but NOT DURING. Some local parent came in and complained and I don't want this great local venue to become unavailable as so many others have in Victoria.
Other than this though things went well, no one got killed, no one's in jail, so at least there's that... - Sat, 22 Nov 2003 7:48am

Thanks to Brian for putting us on again. This show ripped despite my sore throat. Props to my band for keeping the music tight and heavy to compensate for me. Crowd response was great. Hope Against from Van were unreal great music and killer vocals. Bands like them really raise the bar on the quality of music being played locally (Vic & Van). Tough as Nails as always were great. Especially the Minor Threat cover. Regretfully I missed Heart Carried Heavy but heard good things from friends who were there. Lastly much respect to the kids who came out. Without them there would be no show! - Sun, 23 Nov 2003 2:24am

Yeah, super fun show, Hope Against blew me away. Heart Carried heavy were awesome as usual. Self Inflicted are getting so good these days.
Nanaimo was great too, Liu Family Tigers put on another great set, and That other new band (sorry I can't remember their name) Sounded pretty sweet too. Too bad Josh couldn't make it, it felt really weird playing without him. - Sun, 23 Nov 2003 6:35am

Yeah I enjoyed Nanaimo more but that's since I didn't have to worry about drunk imbeciles trying to ruin the local scene.
Speaking of which we're nearly banned from the JBCC after the other night thanks to the extreme stupidity of the drinkers at the show. If we're able to do another show there we're required to do regular patrols of the grounds and kick out anyone drinking.
If anyone thinks they can come and get wasted and sneak in, seriously, stay home.
If you want to come and dance and have a good time, support bands and listen to music you are most welcome. - Mon, 24 Nov 2003 8:01am

This show was one of the sickest shows I'v been to at the JBCC. All the bands were great. Especially Self Inflicted they owned this show. When they played everyone was going crazy. Knocking lights off the ceiling, dogpiles just throwin down. TAN were solid as always. Hope Against form Van really surprised me, there set was tight. I hope the shows there can continue. Next time come for the music and leave the drinking till after. - Mon, 24 Nov 2003 8:56am

I was getting drunk while the emo band played. Who cares what their name was.

Self Inflicted inspired some furious fight dancing, and Hope Against were pretty good too. I left before Tough as Nails played, but I hope it went well, they sound better every time I hear them. Especially since they changed their drummer.

PS I hope, at the very least, you're not surpised drunk assholes showed up to an all-ages show in Victoria; just keeping the status quo for the scene alive for a third decade running. And as for sneaking in, thanks to whoever slammed a door in my friends' faces even though they DID pay. - Mon, 24 Nov 2003 2:48pm

The other band that played the Nanaimo Show was the limps.
Both shows blew me away- the Nanaimo one had a huge turn out.
As for my first and second time actually being able to stick around and catch tough as nails- i was completely impressed. Great show, thanks for putting it on Brian. Sorry to hear about the bad behaviours of kids costing us a good reputation with the venue. - Mon, 24 Nov 2003 7:52pm

No, not surprised so much at the presence of drunks but rather their mind-boggling stupidity and arrogance. Drinking in the front of the building and pissing in full view of the street rather than at least going around back where no one can see? Please.
I don't care if drunks show up, but when they drink right outside the front doors of the venue it's pretty amazing. - Mon, 24 Nov 2003 8:24pm

Interesting show. A quick review. . .

Heart Carried Heavy

These folks are treading into areas somewhere around Slint and Rodan but with a bit too much near Christian sounding college pop for my likings. They could either turn into total suckness or gain momentum and become something very cool. Depends on how much Top 40 they listen to I guess (the less the better).

Self Inflicted

These guys are a WAY better metal band than a punk band. Agnostic Front were only maybe 5% cool and they were from like 15 years ago or something so have an excuse. Self Inflicted however do not so you need to put more passion into the punk elements (i.e. rough and raw) or drop them and stick to the metal which you seem to handle well naturally. And what's with the SOD cover? You guys thinking about turning white power or something?

Hope Against

These folks were good musicians and the songs some what varied. Unfortunately, they couldn't write a riff to save their life. Hopelessly generic, hookless sounds-like-everything-else generi-core. Contemporary sure but absolutely nothing of note here, move on.

Tough As Nails

Sloppier than when I last saw them but one of the few decent pure punk bands in Victoria. I personally find the straight-edge trappings suggestive of black Nikes and cyanide (i.e. an Aum Shinrikyo cult waiting to happen) but you can't argue with the energy and delivery.

So a toss up between Self Inflicted and Tough As Nails as to who carried the show and overall the event di show that there is continued hope for the Victoria punk scene.

IMHO

Cheers

Well, perhaps not 100% so but close enough for government work I would have thought. Isn't it something like 3/5ths with the rest vegan? Lyrically they might as well be too (all the "scene" and "brotherhood" type stuff).

=)

Close enough? With two members sXe, (and those same 2 are the vegan ones BTW) it hardly makes the band straight-edge. Close enough. Seriously.

You should ask the promoters of the Kamloops RageFest if ToughAsNails is a straight-edge band.

And exactly how do song lyrics about the growing Victoria HC scene (which covers about 3 of our 12 songs...) have anything to do with a non-drinking lifestyle choice?

Seriously, calling us a straight-edge band is just showing how little attention you have been actually paying.

. . . or a reflection of how little differentiation there is between you folks and what would traditionally be considered a straight-edge band.

The communal mic antics, the karate kick crowd participation, all the borderline homo-erotic "bonding" stuff, etc. I'm not trying to slag you folks (as I've stated, I think Tough As Nails are one of the few decent punk bands in Victoria) but it should not be surprising that I thought you were a straight-edge band since you have all the trappings of one. Not a lot of difference between Minor Threat footage on "Something Better Change" (or whatever that tour movie was called) and what you folks are doing (except for the inclusion of women which is not traditionally a straight-edge thing, good on ya).

For the record, I am hardly the only one under this impression - in fact this is the first I have ever heard you folks ever referred to as anything but straight-edge (that includes discussions with friends, people on the bus, overhearing customer talk in Ditch Records, chatting at gigs, etc.).

So I'll note in all future comments about Tough As Nails (in bold if possible) that you are NOT A STRAIGHT-EDGE BAND!

=)

Why must everyone label bands?!? I could never figure out the sXe label, and this "kinda pogo/slam pit, but it's just people doin' some wierd dancing" type of scene. Self Inflicted, are they a metal or punk band?!? Does it really matter?!? - Wed, 26 Nov 2003 7:17am

Who cares about all that. Anyway, S.I. had an amazing time playing both the shows with Tough As Nails and Hope Against. We've finally located a hardcore band from Van to get over here, congrats to Brian! What can I say about Tough As Nails, the new songs are killer and the longer the set, the longer it takes to crawl from the floor when they're done. Nice work as a 4 piece up north too. As for Hope Against, we haven't met cooler guys in a while, amazing band with affordable merch and a demo that's worth waaay more than they charge! We'll be playing with them soon in Van, they're sound is old school and heavy. Love 'em. Thanks to xDANNx and xBRIANx for the effort and promo, it don't get better than these folks for shows. bwahahahah, arguing about not being a straight edge band, that is brilliant, makes me want to raise a beer in a toast. Since we played in Kamloops with Tough Nails and I got to watch half of the band be just drunken fools for half the night I would have to agree they arent a straight edge band. BUT.... Your singers straight edge presence definitely makes up for your lack of good wholesome moral values. It must of been a good show if Ron is actually impressed with punk rock, it's been a long time since I've heard anything of the sort actually slide past his lips. I'm glad everyone had a good time. Hey Brian you need to put the Hoosegow and A.W.T. on an all ages bill, we havent done one in a while. - Wed, 26 Nov 2003 1:52pm

yo Jay, I'm thinking of doing an all-local show early next year as a benefit to buy a domain name for the VIHC page. Which means even if there are no touring bands coming I can make it cheap, make the $50 it'll cost to buy vihc.whatever, and still pay all the bands a few bucks.
I might have to find a different venue for it than the JBCC though, I'm not sure what they'd think if I did a bill with the AWT after the brouhaha of last Friday... - Thu, 27 Nov 2003 7:59am

This post is a little late. I had never seen any of these bands before and I was impressed by how good they were. Like Self Inflicted. I have seen there posters up alot but I had never checked them out. They were so much better than I had expected them to be but so were all of the bands. I will definately be at more shows if this is the state of Victoria's hardcore scene. - Fri, 28 Nov 2003 1:18pm
