Dave Noisy User Info... | I must say, Lucky's 'early' shows are hella lame. There were four people in the audience for RCR (who played an understandably short set, they were great tho, keyboard and drums, cool catchy pop tunes..never seen a drummer playing a keyboard at the same time!) Veal came on, and there were maybe 8 people (~30 for the last song.) Woo! Poor Luke.. They had fun, but it must have been a real disappointment for them.. They were kind enough to give us a rockin' encore tho. If this shit keeps up, we're not gonna see many good bands here. (What happened to the New Pornographers show that was originally listed for Sunday at Sugar?? That was the show i've been most looking forward to since Frank Black..) Lucky - mess off with these 'early' shows. I know a few people that planned to go but didn't know this and turned away at the door at 10pm when the show was 2/3rds over. No band wants to be limited to a 90min window so some dance troop can come in later and make you all your $$. Last time i saw this was with Martin Tielli..what a slap in the face to have to kick musicians like that off stage. I'm sure this happens to a lot of bands there. Sad. - Dave - Sun, 15 Jun 2003 11:49am
Rawb User Info... | First off--As far as I know The New Pornographers were doing Letterman this weekend and hence had to cancel a couple of local shows. Secondly, I went to see the 5 act hip hop show at Lucky a week ago (Lyrics Born etc..) and the doors were barely open by 9:00 pm. This show cost $22.00 (at the door) and had to be finished by 11:00pm--No way am I paying 22 bux to see 4 or five acts rushed on and off stage in a two hour box. I heard the show was really good and I'm sorry I missed it, but I had to make a descision. I don't have a ton of money so I chose to play it safe and save my cash for a night I might get 3 or 4 hours of music for 20+ dollars. Lucky's a decent venue. I too wish they wouldn't hedge their bets and try to cram 2 separate events in one evening. But this is Victoria and maybe they need to try something, anything, to ensure they aren't losing money due to poor turnout. Viscious circle... - Sun, 15 Jun 2003 6:33pm

after work I | after work I go home and eat dinner. Your early show policy sucks ass...I never go to them cuz I am usually still eating my dinner or walking the dog. One time I tried to see a band and got there at 8pm only to find out that were all finished and they were playing second! It is a shame that you don't think that you can make enough money off live local bands, Victoria is one of the worst places to play for local bands regarding bucks $$$. Any suggestions on how to make it work for both the band and the bar. - Sun, 15 Jun 2003 11:30pm
Zippgunn User Info... | On my first tour of Europe the request was the same every night; "please be done by 10 PM so we can start the rave". I found it an insult at first but then I realised that the bonus was that I got to bed at a decent hour, and I could have a coupla wets after the show. But early shows don't seem to work in these parts. - Tue, 17 Jun 2003 3:41pm
Masturbating The War God User Info... | Ahh, fucking clubs used for shows. Same thing happened at the Cryptopsy show in Van last March, it started way too late and Krisiun didn't even play, Cryptopsy played 25 minutes and Dimmu got the most, bo-fucking-urns. And all so they could boot us up and let the lineup of dancers in for 11. I still want my fucking money back from that. - Tue, 17 Jun 2003 10:35pm
lucky bar | interesting post and one i feel pretty strongly about. starting with the dayglos show on june 20, lucky bar will be doing all night shows on friday nights as we already do on monday, tuesday and thursday. the idea is that on fridays we can book touring acts or local bands that have a proven draw. play an early weekday show, show us what you can do and we will talk about friday nights. people have to remember that the bar business is very competitive and contrary to popular belief, clubs don't make shitloads of money. having the club nights afterwards has allowed us to showcase some bands that ordinarily would not get booked on a weekend. we will continue have early shows on saturday night but will try to match them up with bands that maybe cross over a little better with the dj crowds. hopefully friday nights can be used for rock, punk, metal and such. that being said the onus now shifts onto the public to come out and support the shows. we are working very hard to book and promote quality acts, both local and out of town. we try to price our shows reasonably and would love to see people come out. personally, i am doing this because i love live music. harpos is imbedded in my memory for all the cool shows that i saw there and the icehouse comes second from my days of working there. thats how i want people to feel about lucky, 5 or 10 years from now and that is what i am working towards. look forward in the near future to infernal majesty, speedealer, D.O.A.. would love to see you all at these shows. be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. ben. - Wed, 18 Jun 2003 2:47am
after work I | Thanks Ben, it makes me feel alot better knowing that fridays will be something that I be able to go to and enjoy. I was discouraged by the early shows, I can't get out that early most times... but please note that alot of local bands I want to see are playing your early shows...I would like to see them, and will, if they can play in the evening. For example I love run chico run! I do take my hat off to you for bringing some totally great bands to town and the ones coming up look great too. Since you have been booking at lucky it has been a noticable improvement. Hurray for Fridays nights! - Wed, 18 Jun 2003 3:14am
Dave Noisy User Info... | Thanks for the replies. Glad to see you're making more of an effort Ben, hope it all works out. Just be careful tho - when you say the onus is on the public - you better make sure you're covering your end. The Veal show was sad, sad, sad. I felt extremely ripped off, both for me and the friend i brought along to introduce to these bands. I did my part of the deal Ben - what happened? In general, the bands were worth the cover ($10), but not when it's such a short, limited and under-promoted show. (How many songs did RCR play? Six?) The onus is really on you to put out, if you want people to come. And *you're* the only one who can take care of that end of things, so don't try and make Joe Public the negative factor, that's bullshit. I personally know several people who planned to go to the show, but turned around when they got there at 10pm to find out the show was almost over. (Sure, i guess it's partially their fault for not hunting down and reading the posters, but the posting on LiveVic didn't say ANYTHING, and with bands like RCR and Veal, you'd think it'd be a 'regular' show.) I, for one, will be hesitating next time i see 'doors open at 8 at Lucky', but i hope to see more positive changes. - Dave - Wed, 18 Jun 2003 3:48pm
King Bong User Info... | KB did an early show at Lucky with a smallish turnout a few months back..it was not a great night for us as we had some equipment faliure and the early start time really messed us up..that being said, the staff and sound guy were great and I like the venue overall.. I'm happy that Lucky is opening their Friday nights so to speak but I do share the concern expressed in an earlier post..you have to be careful about judging bands draw based on the crowds at mid-week and early shows..people don't go out during the week to see local bands in this town, unless they are a band friend or the local act does not play that often. Until recently playing only once a month in Vic is one of the ways we keep our draw up. It's a combo of the venue and the act working together to create the event..Lucky should consider some wicked mid-week drink specials or give aways to bring in crowd to become fans of the great local acts that work many of the other bars in town every week end and would love an opportunity to add Lucky to their list of musician friendly rooms!
