Well here's my review. The gig area seemed a little too small, and no stage, no big deal. I caught the first two bands, Self Inflicted rocked but they lost a bass speaker half way thru the set and god knows what was up with the feedback from the mic. As usual, it rocked. Then AK-47 took the stage (never seen them live before) but it was really hard hearing the show (vocals), nonetheless was a good set. Unfortunately I left during the Tough as Nails set, how was that set anyways? I ran into a bunch of people from here I've never met before and even ran into someone I went to high school with and haven't seen in years (he was selling vinyl outside). I bought a Self Inflicted CD fer $5, good deal! Nice to run into people behind the /nicks. All in all, thumbs up, but next time, do you think you could book the gym?!? Peace... - Sat, 31 May 2003 5:58pm

all righty, Self Inflicted were great, yup the bass was definitely a problem. Chris's vocals kept feeding back every time he walked past the speakers,ah well shit happens they rocked. As usual AK-47 fucking ruled, but then again I have yet to see them do a shitty show. Tough As Nails, they fucking ruled, best show I've seen them play yet. Despite all the technical difficulties they held it together and fucking ruled. They are one of my new favorite bands in town I think.I had to leave before the headliners played but I was thoroughly happy with the acts I saw. As for the hall, I like places with no stage it's more personal. It was a little small, but hey it's a venue, they get props for that alone. - Sat, 31 May 2003 6:14pm

Hey guys, thanks for coming out. Everything worked out really well, we even got to pay every band. We can't use the gym because it's ridiculously huge and the sound is abysmal and has a terrible echo. The only minor problem was when someone who I guess was trying to be a good samaritan decided I was trying to hurt people in the pit and pushed me down repeatedly. Hardcore pits area all about the floorpunching and spin kicks and trying not to hit people, as opposed to the standard punk "smash into each other" mosh pit where the point IS to hit each other. It's all good though, I know he was trying to do something right, even if it was a bit misguided. It's kind of ironic that the only person who got hit was me, by my girlfriend! I accept this though since I was in the pit and I assume the risks.
Next time though I think I will stick to cartwheels and floorpunches since in such a small space it's difficult for the kids to make enough room for the kicks.
Anyways TAN is playing with Himsa again on June 18 so come on out for that. We're trying to put together something for July 5th with Go It Alone, and there's definitely a July 31 show with Modern Life is War, which I'll probably switch to James Bay from the Braefoot centre. - Sat, 31 May 2003 7:59pm
Anonymous good show guys! I didn't see Self Inflicted, but Ak47 was really good (although I agree that you couldn't hear the vocals very well, too bad because I've heard that they have some good lyrics and sweet harmonies), and Tough As Nails was really good too. Come on VIHC guy, never in Victoria will absolutely every audience member understand what hardcore dancing is all about, too bad because it does look really cool. I really enjoyed Mach Tiver too, a brother/sister bass/drums duo that really lived up to their reputation, or at least what I'd heard about them. So when's the next VIHC show? - Sat, 31 May 2003 8:23pm

I don't expect people to understand the crazy hardcore dancing, I'd just prefer if they didn't go nuts and push people around (namely me)! ha ha
Looks like there may be yet another show on June 27, only 9 days after the aforementioned Himsa show. It's shaping up to be a good summer! - Sat, 31 May 2003 10:33pm
Not 17 years old you looked pretty silly pal. - Sat, 31 May 2003 10:43pm
matt hog VIHC im the guy who knocked you down . i do understand what hardcore dancing is and i wasnt trying to be a good samaritan , i was just pissed off cuz 3 times you just backed up blindly started doing floor punches and started spinning kicks in air not even looking where you kicking or where your backing into, one of those kicks i literally felt the wind go by my face . and i got pissed off this isnt new york or even vancouver. it was the jb community center, and its a really small venue and you should just watch what your doing cuz some people might not appreciate getting a kick in the head as you probably didnt like being tossed to the ground - Sat, 31 May 2003 10:46pm

Well, first off, I was looking where I was going, because if I wasn't I would have kicked someone. But I will be more careful next time. What city this is shouldn't matter, so long as it's fun. Shows shouldn't be about standing around looking sullen. And "17 whatever" I don't care how I looked because it's about having a good time.
So I'm sorry I got on your nerves, but it would have been a lot easier and less nutty to just come up and say something to me. "Hey man, could you be more careful with those kicks" would have been nice. I'd much rather know what it is that's making someone angry than have them just suddenly start pushing.
Regardless, the show was great, everyone had a good time and that's what matters. - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 12:49am

Self Inflicted is on the July 31 Modern Life is War bill now, it will be great and if you miss it you will regret it for the rest of your life.
Maybe a June 27 Friday show with By The Throat from Vernon. It'll be good... - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 1:36pm
Anonymous my favorite part of the show was those kids outside drinking and the one who said "who cares if we lose this venue, its a crappy one anyways" - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 2:41pm
lily_liquor My favourite part was when someone said, "Don't you know that guy's the promoter?"...and Paul says "I don't care if he's the fucking King of Siam, he's still a jackass"... Heehee. It was a fun show. - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 4:15pm
Anonymous Who is Modern life is war? Are they from Vancouver? The James Bay Community Centre was a great venue, I hope there's more shows there. - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 6:48pm

Yeah, as opposed to the drinkers outside the venue, me and my buddy had the decency to drink in a parked car down the street. We even got to catch some baseball while we were at it.

Missed Self Inflicted, unfortunately. AK-47's sound was a little uneven, as said b/f, the vocals were drowned out, but the energy was there. TAN had the best (as in, clearest) sound of the evening, really played well. I couldn't find myself appreciating Mach Tiver's sound, but the bassist was really skillful at filling out the gaps, since it was a bass/drum combo. - Mon, 2 Jun 2003 3:16am

I thought about something, jeez ya know perhaps I'm getting old, and not mosh as much, but I always thought that the idea of a mosh pit was when you just jumped around and into people, so why do they now label it Hardcore Moshing?!/ All it really seemed to me was just a coordinated martial arts dance. Mosh = Random/Chaos. Sigh, the good old days... BTW: I still think you guys need to hold the next one in the gym and pack the place. Acoustics shouldn't pose a problem if you decide to use a mixing board and run all your sound thru that. - Mon, 2 Jun 2003 8:08pm
Anonymous Hey Enstein,
ya we'll just pack the place...cant you count? only 30 or 35 people were there! - Mon, 2 Jun 2003 8:36pm

Not unless those 35 people were paying $10 each. We counted at least 70 paying people up to the point when we stopped charging. We easily covered costs and paid all the bands. I think at the end during Mach Tiver you're probably right, there were about 30 people left.
The problem with getting the gym is three-fold: it causes way more neighbourhood noise and would get the show shut down, it is more expensive, and it is in high demand and very hard to book. It was in use that Friday. Plus getting a sound guy costs about $100 more. - Mon, 2 Jun 2003 10:02pm
Anonymous funny how the same people who bitch about paying cover charges are the same who bitch about shitty sound and small venues. When are you promoters gonna wise up? We want FREE shows with PRO sound in a HUGE arena type venue.... - Tue, 3 Jun 2003 1:45am
