Ok.... I drove an hour and ten each way to see Justin Hewitt and Cindy Davis ( and band ) Perform at the Black Stilt on Hillside. Was It worth it ????
Hell yea.
I was blow away. twice over. Having never seen Justin Hewitt before I had no frickin' idea what I was in for. An outstanding performance with well written songs. Justin's songs tell a story. His voice is gentle and soothing at some points and unbelievably powerfull on others. The guitar work has a wide range of character from glistening sounds of a chorus pedal to mellow warm rythmic plucking. Felt like getting up and dancing but didn't want to get thrown out for being rowdy, and honestly.... didn't want to give up my front row seat I managed to snag the second someone left.
As for Cindy Davis and her band.....
equally amazing. Quite different from Justin's sound yet the two performers have a nice blend when playing to one audience. Cindy was backed by four other musicians and they all performed an outstanding set. Cindy's song have a touch of jazz which makes them very interesting to the ear. At some points she caressed the keys of her slick looking Nord and crept into your soul quitely.... I found myself nearly in a trance stairing at the little blue light on their mixer board and zonin' out to her beautiful voice and great key playing. Other times she builds into powerfull vocal parts with the band there to back her. Didn't catch all their names but recognized a few faces. Nice work on the guitars and dobro Colin McTaggart.... long time no see. The drummer ( not sure I think named John Andrews ) did a great job, knew what to play.... and what not to play. Ryan Macleod I believe was the male singer in the group and also played guitar. Nice job of adding in just enough vocals to make a sweet mix with him and the two girls singing. Ryan seems like he might be labeled the life of the party. You can tell he's having fun up there and really loves what he's doing. The Cello was a really nice touch to the whole thing and I think it was Katie Schaan I saw up there giving her best. She not only played the cello well, but did a fabulous job of backing Cindy and Ryan on the vocals. I think I managed to see the two most powerfull singing voices I've heard in ages, both at the same show. Anyone who sat this show out missed out big time, but honestly... no one else could have fit in there anyways. The place was packed like a sardine can in there. Was damn near standing room only, I just got lucky and managed to get a seat right up front. Also was smart enough to buy both their CDs before the mob at the end of the show. Managed to get autographs on both CDs and get out alive without being crushed by the large amount of people in a not-so huge cafe. Was a frickin' great show and I would see both Justin Hewitt or Cindy Davis and her band in concert any chance I get. Now I'm off to the woods where I'm supposed to be, to speak with the wind.
