trevor corey User Info... | My first exposure to Band of Horses. I thought they are pretty good. Kind of a Matt Mayes, Sam Roberts, Trews type of band, with a Geddy Lee type singer. I'll get a better idea once I listen to the disc a few times. Beck. Unbelievable talent. To see such a world class superstar in our quaint little Royal Theatre was a real treat. By the end he had the entire crowd up and out of their seats dancing together. Great show, Great set list. People were even sparking the cheeba (which is VERY rare at the Royal) - Thu, 28 Aug 2008 1:41am
Whitford St. Holmes User Info... | I might be in the minority, but I thought the sound was atrocious for both. Beck's show was tight and I loved the pacing, but I feel like I wasted $50. The sound doesn't need to shitty just because it's a live show. From an artist of Beck's calibre I expect more. I wasn't that familiar with Band of Horses (I know, I've been meaning to pick up their stuff), but does any band need to change guitars that often in an opening set? Three Les Pauls and Tele, never mind the half assed pedal steel he played. Man, I sound bitter! - Thu, 28 Aug 2008 10:44am
Yo Mama User Info... | I have heard similar comments about the sound last night, but fom where I was sitting (up front on the floor) it was great. Bass heavy, but that's the way I like it. His band, by the way, was phenomenal. And his a cover of "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime" (from Eternal Sunshine of the Spoltess Mind) was a nice surprise. Great talent, great show. - Thu, 28 Aug 2008 11:22am Edited: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 11:22am
Whitford St. Holmes User Info... | http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9KC7uhMY9s This youtube clip of Marvin Gaye from 1973 highlights what is possible. Live, James Jamerson with flats. You can hear every note, the congas, piano, guitar, voice riding on top of everything. I suspect Beck would love have a sound like that coming off the stage. I'm a bass player, and with a very few exceptions I couldn't make out a single note of what either bassist was doing. I think the problem is the overabundance of subwoofers (which I've often found produce frequencies, but not tones) and soundmen who are competent at making rocket go now, but don't have ears. Too many think lots of bottom somehow equates to great sound. Last night it didn't for me, and I was 15 rows back on the floor in the centre. If you can't deliver decent sound in the Royal, you shouldn't be mixing. - Thu, 28 Aug 2008 4:05pm
trevor corey User Info... | I just wanted to add a link to a song off of Beck's latest offering, which I think went under the radar a bit. Although I don't listen to the radio much, so who knows. The cd is called "Modern Guilt", and is most excellent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIBw-lbxtT4 I like this song off of the album too, "Soul of a Man" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_faqeq-tTZk ...and this one too, "Chemtrails" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeiFVfyiSiw - Sat, 30 Aug 2008 12:54pm
