Informed | I was talking to the band that played at the UPSTAIRS LOUNGE ON WHARF STREET Saturday Night. (Double Diamond, April 12) They were a little choked, they got stiffed for more than half of their pay. Club said because of numbers but no disclaimers were discused when THEY phoned the band to book. Just a "Take it or Leave it" attitude at the end of the night. Beware Beware Beware! Get money upfront if you can, or just don't play there. They will soon realize that Victoria is a very small community and news travels fast. - Mon, 14 Apr 2003 11:59am
Anonymous | i was there. the bar was empty. deal with it. they probably asked for too much money. - Mon, 14 Apr 2003 11:49pm
Anonymous | Dude, try the same attitude with your car mechanic.. Tell him you're not going to pay that much for the work cuz his garage wasn't full and see who walks home.. A job is a job and a contract is a contract! To promise a band an amount of money, no strings, and then reduce the amount at the end of the night is slimy! We don't need these kind of people in the biz! - Tue, 15 Apr 2003 12:22pm
Informed | They didn't "ask", the club offered. The club didn't do any promotion. I think they were hopeing the band would do all the promotion for the show but didn't tell the band that is what they wanted. The band played to a sold out show last year at the Cambie where as part of the agreement with the club, the band sold tickets and did all the promo. They played in Duncan at the Cowichan Theatre for 750 in Feb/03. The Duncan Paper gave them a great write-up. Bottom line is the club broke a contract! - Tue, 15 Apr 2003 6:06pm

Anonymous | informed can you say "slander" even if what you say is true this is not the way to go about "informing" . dont believe everything you hear.investigate.go down and talk to the manager and get it from the source which im almost certain you have not done?. then you would have half a reason to write what you have written. this way is not the right way to do it.do you understand? - Mon, 21 Apr 2003 12:05am

the truth | This is the truth about the double diamond show. The band was contacted to play the show, and the agreement that was arranged with the club and the band; was a door split based on the club doing promotion as well as the band. The club did all the promo that they agreed to and then some. The band failed to do the promo that they agreed to do. So show day comes and there was a bad turn out. The band played and did a so so performance, at the end of the night the door was counted and the band was only to take a few hundred $ . The club then gave the band $1000 so that each member got at lest $100 take home + drinks at the bar. The agreement with the club was verbal and the band was happy when they left that night. The next day they called the club whining that they did not make enough cash. Well if you had been paid what you where worth you would have had less then what you where paid so what are you complaining about?? Bands must do promo. Music is a business if you want to succeed you have to promote yourself. Bands play bars to sell beer! If you cant bring in a crowd you will not gig for long. Long story short the band got paid more then what was agreed . The Upstairs Cabaret is one of the most honest clubs around and they pay a good fee for their acts. They treat every performer with the most respect but they will not be taken advantage of. Double Diamond was paid more then the agreement stated and the bar had several conversations with the band leading up to the show and not once did the band mention a change of agreement. If you want to play at one of the best venues in town this is the place to play, if you want to play one of the best live venues around then this is the club youre looking for. But if you want to slag the club for events that dont have anything to do with you get the truth first!!! - Tue, 6 May 2003 2:06pm
Sheesh | If in fact they did not pay the band the agreed price that is brutal. But is everyone sure that is what happened? I am not? but regardless not gonna hack apart a new live venue when the city has hardly any as it is! - Tue, 6 May 2003 2:29pm

ML7Mike | A $1000 ?? Whats there to complain about? Ive never even heard of the band before, and $1000 is very generous for any local act I think. - Tue, 6 May 2003 4:21pm
