whats this, a review of my own bands show? well as most of you who know me well know, deep down inside Im a selfish self serving bastard, so it shouldnt come as any surprise!

Anyhow, Trollband kicked off the evening with a crazy trollish thrash sound, kind of hard to explain, but I definately caught the Zelda edge that they claim as an influence on their myspace.. at high speed with heavy vocals that is.. lots of speed metal jigs going on here, makes me think of.. well.. trolls doing a jig while ravaging the ancient lands. Finished their set with a Finntroll song if I can remember correctly.

Next up were my new band Unleash The Archers. Our first show, and my first time on stage since ML7 died in 2006. Was nice to see lots of our Vancouver friends show up and keep me too distracted to think about the butterflies that I wasnt really feeling anyhow.. Couple shots of Jagersomethings thanks to Ian and someone else I forget who, and I was ready to go. I had fun. I missed the feeling of playing live, and it was awesome that I decided to setup right on The Cobalt stages plywood trampoline section so of course I almost fell over about 10 times during the set. We were awesome, easily the best band on the bill, in fact the best band in the universe! 3 thumbs up for my band! (*sic) anyhow, kudo's to our singer Brittany, who has toured the planet and has more stage experience than all of us, but has never fronted a small band, she was like an old pro up there, and to our baby faced bass player Zahk who was actually experiencing his first ever appearance on stage... Unlike the rest of us old bastards, who felt right at home.

Unfortunately I completely missed Gods Empty Promise as I was outside cooling off, drinking Pil and smoking hash with the massive mob of fans that were harrassing me for an autograph and to have my children ( of course I told Tom Crom, no way man, I dont swing that way) But according to my band mates who were actually not rude like me, GEP were crushingly good and quite fun to watch,,.

next up were the headliners Deadriver Wasteland.. once known as Widowmaker Id seen them in 2004 in Prince George when we all shared a stage in a roller rink with the mighty Lord Worm fronted Cryptopsy. Id remembered them in my sleep deprived flu inflicted state as having seriously kicked some ass and 4 years later, they are still seriously kicking ass! Dual guitar shred assault, super tight drumming, KILLER vocal attack, easily the best band of the night, and by far the most experienced, which showed. Why hasnt this band played Victoria? Some promoter should book them.. with UTA and Meccha Messiah!

Alot of fun, as The Cobalt usually is, and a big thanks to Wendy13 for having us on the bill and treating us so well! - Mon, 5 May 2008 11:52am Edited: Mon, 5 May 2008 11:52am

Good show, I like her voice.

Yeah, that Kelowna band... I liked their parts & arrangements a lot, but I just didn't like how they played them. Lacking groove or something. I was trying to get people to sabotage their set so DRW could play longer, but they were good. They played a long time. Me and Paul were laughing so hard it hurt coming up with ways we could take them out.

Obviously I'm a big DRW fan, but did you check out that girl in the pit who kept TOUCHing everyone? I ignored it the first few times thinking she just wanted people to mosh with but then I started telling her to stop and she wouldn't. I just wanted to watch the band, is that too much to ask? - Mon, 5 May 2008 4:26pm
