Mr. Hell User Info... | Compound Terror were just too much for me. Headache inducing is the phrase I heard most, but when playing the stuff they do, that is a huge compliment...so they do what they do well! Mitochondrion came out with a killer intro which reminded me of 'The Rack' by Asphyx. They then proceeded through their set going the quicker route for most of it. However, I found their appeal to be when they slowed it down and grooved out. I haven't heard a band in Victoria of this style do it better in recent memory. I'd like to hear more of that from Mito because there just isn't enough quality, mid-paced, catchy death metal around anymore. Tyrant's Blood fucking tore my head clean off. I have seen them before three or four times, but this one took the cake. Brian filled the vocal slot perfectly bringing in extra muscle where it was needed. The string section are all abnormally proficient at their craft and Matt is flawless in the back. Catchy yet unrelenting material. The new stuff is beyond amazing! I am proud of these guys for taking what had unlimited potential and making it into what is definitely in the top 5 of Canadian metal bands. I am sure it will only get more insane with each new tune they write. Anyone who enjoys their metal cannot miss Tyrant's Blood, ever! Did you show the others that Monday blurb, Tommy? - Sun, 27 Apr 2008 1:58pm Edited: Sun, 27 Apr 2008 1:59pm
Bryan User Info... | Calling Mito's slow parts "mid paced catchy death metal" does them such a disservice that it hurts me. They've grown into an absolutely fucked band, their set was overwhelming to say the least. I definitely dig their current direction but can tell that I'll need to give the CD I picked up quite a few listens before really being able to decipher it. Compound Terror slayed, it was nice to be able to clearly hear the riffs. Tyrants Blood weren't really my thing, but they're good at what they do. - Sun, 27 Apr 2008 6:21pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | I didn't realize that complimenting a band with words comparing them to what I loved as I was growing up (bands like Malevolent Creation who wrote memorable music without relying on blast beats in a genre that is riddled with forgettable bullshit) is a disservice. On their My Space their first genre is 'Death Metal' and their description of 'sounds like' says "Cosmic Metal of Death". What would be the correct terminology, oh wise elder of metal? - Sun, 27 Apr 2008 7:31pm
Bryan User Info... | I didn't mean to come off as picking apart your chosen terminology, there's certainly nothing wrong with mid paced catchy death metal, I was just blown away by how elaborate and strange their new compositions are. It strikes me as having evolved way beyond the standard death metal approach and into something that does so much more than just being "mid paced death metal", of which we've all heard tons... most of which fails to live up to the classic bands. The stuff played at this show was an entirely different beast. Sorry if I phrased my statement poorly, I was just trying to give the dudes credit. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:11am Edited: Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:13am
Mr. Hell User Info... | Well, catchy is what sets it apart for me. It is what it is, right? Sorry for the reaction, but I get irked when people nitpick subgenres. It's really pointless and annoying. Now I see you were expressing your pleasure for their new material. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 6:31am
Heather User Info... | Great show. Thanks to Tyrants Blood for coming over and tearing it up. Thanks to Mitochondrion and Compund Terror for playing the show and everyone whom came out to support. Cheers. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 9:29am Edited: Mon, 28 Apr 2008 9:29am
CL User Info... | "Every show I've played there it's the house mp3 list which rarely suits the crowd. Hope that changes." How was the music between sets? I just added a schwack of metal to our collection. "they played of Montreal in between bands it was sweet" That makes me a little nervous. Not that I don't like of Montreal, just that it isn't what I wanted played that night. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:19pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | The music was not suited to the show. It seems to be an ongoing thing. I didn't notice any metal being played. The only thing that stood out to me was QOTSA and that is not really a crowd favourite at such a show. Last time I offered a CD to be played that was tailor made for a show, I was told in no uncertain terms to take my CD and disappear, and that the bar staff chooses the music they want to hear and that is the end of discussion. That's fine and all, but lately it seems most shows I go to (at every venue), the music played is way off the mark and even gets repeated three or four times. It's like whoever is in charge of it views it as background noise. A shame really. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 6:07pm
CL User Info... | Screw - that's just not right. I've added tons of metal to our collection, and there definitely should've been something more appropriate than QOTSA (not that I don't like them.) I'm also bugged because I left a note saying "PLAY METAL" and afterwards specifically asked someone who worked if they had. Next time please feel free to ask them to play something appropriate - naturally we can't have tons of people going behind the bar, but I've set up five or six all-metal playlists with 75 songs each on them, so all they have to do is open a couple up. They're playlists, so they're reasonably diverse, but QOTSA wouldn't've made the cut. I'm not looking at the collection now, so I can't remember everything we've got, but a small selection that comes to mind is Amon Amarth, Entombed, Moonsorrow, Mastodon, Khanate, High On Fire, Gorgoroth, etc. etc. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 6:27pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | Right on, Chris. Will do! If you require other tunes, I'd be happy to bring down assorted stuff you may not have. Some Entombed and High On Fire would have been excellent. Next time we'll get 'er done! - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 6:58pm
CL User Info... | For sure - I don't get down much at night anymore (though it looks like I should) but if you want to leave me something on disc that'd be great. - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 2:05pm
canon.docre User Info... | Hey all, thanks for coming out. Drummer for Compound Terror here. Tyrants Blood ruled, totally blew me away, was not expecting them to be that brutal based on the material I had heard (which was their first recording.) Mitochondrion have evolved into really complex deathmetal/blackmetal. Very cool, can't wait to get my hands on a CD for some focussed listening. Also .. bhahahah .. headache inducing. Hahahahah. - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 2:42pm
canon.docre User Info... | and as far as in between music at Logan's, I've been told the same thing, bar staff gets to listen to whatever they want between bands and its always totally inappropriate for the shows I go to, which are the punk and metal shows. Not that I care, I'm usually outside smoking weed in between bands .. - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 2:45pm
cativo User Info... | "Tyrants Blood ruled, totally blew me away, was not expecting them to be that brutal based on the material I had heard (which was their first recording.) " TB seems to get this alot, amazing what a more proficient drummer can do for a group.Opens up a whole new can of worms. - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 3:24pm
CL User Info... | "and as far as in between music at Logan's, I've been told the same thing, bar staff gets to listen to whatever they want between bands" That was never true, but there was at least a lame excuse before when we only had a few scratchy CDs. Now we've got music from 75 different metal acts (I checked this morning,) so there's no excuse at all. Now with only 75, there's obviously not a whole lot from each sub-genre, and you might get something in the mix that isn't to your taste, but the most mainstream we get is Priest (one album). Unless you count Sabbath as mainstream/non-metal - I was going to put them in the "rock" section first, but I figured a lot of metal fans wouldn't mind hearing them in a mix. Anyway, don't feel you have to put up with Morcheeba between sets at metal shows. If you ask politely, when people aren't busy, there's no reason at all they can't play something more in line with the show. Unfortunately I can't be there every night to enforce this, but people should feel free to email me if they've got a complaint about the music and/or staff being dismissive of reasonable requests. - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 4:18pm
Mr. Hell User Info... | Count on me being on top of this. I get very offended when staff at a bar tell me to take a hike when I suggest more appropriate material to be played. I will be sure to not let up next time. If I am turned down, you will hear about it. Why play music that will make the crowd not into drinking, right? Doesn't make much sense. - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 5:01pm Edited: Tue, 29 Apr 2008 9:25pm
CL User Info... | Absolutely - the bar isn't a private playground for the staff. I think we have great staff, but anyone can get in a bad mood every once in a while. The trick to being a professional is to work through it, and in the bar business the way you work through it is to keep the customers happy. I'm always open to criticism (and praise) about what goes on at Logan's. Anyone who wants me can email me anytime - getchrislogan *at* gmail.com (I think it's in my signature, too.) - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 5:30pm
{UTA} Mike User Info... | There alot of 'mainstream' metal that could be played and keep everyone at a happy medium, most notably the bands you suggested, Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, Slayer etc, it doesnt have to be all extreme metal just because thats what type of bands are playing. - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 5:37pm
CL User Info... | Yeah, we've got some Maiden, some Slayer, some Metallica. If someone just hit shuffle in the metal section it'd be pretty diverse - but there shouldn't be any Rage Against the Machine popping up (we've got their first album but I don't consider it metal) or Limp Bizkit (we don't have any of them and never will.) - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 6:46pm
