Message Board > Show Reviews > Sarah Slean - July 26, Gibson Auditorium |
J. Peatman User Info... | Until recently I had not heard of this very talented Canadian lady. My girlfriend is a fan and took me to her show. Opener Reid Jamieson, who looks like the offspring of Jeff Buckley and Morrissey (if something like that is possible), set the tone with a series of skillfully written and performed acoustic songs. He has an impressive and flexible voice, but after he switched from nylon to steel string the songs seemed to get a little more...generic. Great job though. A grand piano and a grand little lady were to follow. Sarah's songs range from melancholy to vaudeville, very gripping at all times. Her humorous and adorable presentation won the crowd and made the auditorium a lot smaller. Her introduction to and performance of the emotional song Mary, an ode to her grandmother who got pregnant shortly before she had to see her husband leave to fight the war, actually made me choke up. It hit close to home as my dearly departed granny went through the exact same thing, left to raise my father by herself for the rest of the war. Anyway, I think everyone fell in love with Sarah that night. After two encores she closed the night on a very upbeat note with the standard "On the Sunny Side of the Street". It was cool to hear at least 50 people in the audience do the whistling part. A very satisfying and intimate show, despite the +/- 250 crowd size. Sarah Slean was amazing. - Thu, 2 Aug 2007 12:25pm
Aidan Logins User Info... | Second time I've missed Sarah Slean. Sadness prevails. Last year she did a solo acoustic "intimate" performance, which was probably swell. Dammit. Next time I'll be there... - Thu, 9 Aug 2007 10:20am
