Just Wondering | Anybody ever notice that there is NEVER any LOCAL ska bands on an enigmatica bill.... I mean localska bands work their asses off all year long to keep the loca ska scene happening then a couple times a year enigmatica brings in the "big" ska acts and never a local opener, while dane makes more money off that one show then any of the hard working locals get in ten shows, off the crowd that is kept ska-a-fied by regular local gigs... you would think enigmatica would apreciate that and give the locals a showcase for all the effort...you would think, but it does not happen ...I would think ...thats gotta piss off the local scene.... but hey just wondering... - Mon, 24 Feb 2003 11:23pm
Greg T. | Just wondering, how much money can be made off of most of the local acts in town? Just wondering, aren't kiltlifters and pressure cooker local? Just wondering. - Mon, 24 Feb 2003 11:42pm
Brett | I play in a local ska band from Victoria and I have nothing but good things to say about Dane. He is one of the funniest, hardworking, friendly guys I have ever met. For example, I remember talking about the skavoovee book with him after it came, so then next time I saw him at the Chris Murray show he hooked me up with a copy and chucked and a NYSJA CD all for free. That just shows what type of guy he is, in fact he even apologized that night i had to pay for that show. Just the fact that he brings ska fest to Victoria every year shows how great of a guy he is. Second of all, many of the shows he books are part of nation wide tours that aren't looking for other bands to play. I can also think of many occasions where Dane has booked local ska bands ( pressure cooker, bloodwarmers, kiltlifters etc. ). So basically what I am saying is the local ska scene is very very very lucky to have Dane as a promoter. p.s. thanks for a great show at steamers the other night dane, im still recovering - Tue, 25 Feb 2003 12:03am
Gare User Info... | Dane works and books shows at the Pandora Projects (I dont remember the new name of the place) but The Hoochy Girls and Ten Too Late have played at those shows. I seem to recall Chris Murray and One Drop playing on the same bill (I think Dane was behind that one as well). Dane does more for Victoria Ska then anyone else around here and suports every band!. Victoria / Island bands do indeed play ska fest Pressure Cooker, Bloodwarmers, Kiltlifters, Stingray, Eep Oop Orp. The out of town bands draw the crowds, if you want more local bands to play then start showing more suport SYLSB - Tue, 25 Feb 2003 12:48am
Andy | "just wondering" must be a member of The Bloodwarmers. That was one of the most fun times I've had at a Ska show here. - Tue, 25 Feb 2003 2:24am
brad | I doubt it was a Bloodwarmer...Dane is a great guy. And has done alot for them and other bands in this town. I've seen the Bloodwarmers and every other ska band in this town one more than one of his bills. Wheather it be ska fest, the cambie, or pandora project. I personally hate it when people complain, and then when someone like Chriss Murray (also Warsaw & Monkey) played the Cambie a year or so ago...the place was half empty...and I didn't see alot of local band members there. Someone also bitched about the fact that Chris Murray is always playing here....fuck ..I saw king Ap back in 94 and had to wait until ska fest #1 to see Chris again. I can't beleive how unbelievably lucky Victoria is to get him back so many times...and i'm sure you can thank Dane..and many others in this town for that. The fact is many local bands are playing the same shows to the same people and just don't have the drawing ability like many out of towners do. Not to mention that if you play too many times localy, you burn out your fan base and no one cares to see you play. Some bands expect to get the good weekend shows just handed to them without "paying their dues" during the week to show their worth. If the local ska bands aren't playing...I say its them who aren't working hard enough at getting booked. Look at how many punk/metal bands are in this town. Their are so many places to play these days, especially all agers, try to get on one of these bills and diversify your crowd...oh yaeh....and stop yer bitching. - Tue, 25 Feb 2003 7:44am
Anonymous | What the fuck is up with you "ska dudes"? - Tue, 25 Feb 2003 9:27am
Sticky Kola | Sometimes I really hate this board! I think Ska fest has a nice mix of local ska bands every year...further i think a promoter by their very nature is about making money at least so they can cover the costs and do another show..nothing wrong with that if Dane makes money brining ska to victoria good for him..it takes a lot of work to bring any show to town he should be paid for his efforts....I have been to and involved with many enignatica shows and while every show has problems and somtimes egos get big I have always found dane to be well organized and fair...so get off his back his business is not charity agency. Kyle User Info... | The idea of Dane exploiting the local ska scene to get to the phat cash is laughable. - Tue, 25 Feb 2003 11:52am

kiltlifter matt User Info... | Much love up to Dane Roberts and all of that 'car-na-val music'! - Wed, 26 Feb 2003 7:23pm
un-hater | Street prophet union, kiltlifters, bloodwarmers, abolitionists, eep op orp, are all local and have all played at SkaFest... some more than once... not to mention all the other local bands that play at Dane's shows. I wish haters would come out from the shadows. go on I dare you! - Fri, 7 Mar 2003 8:42pm
Checkered sears shirt girl | Dane Roberts has been doing amazing shows, with amazing local bands, the first show I ever went to back when I was 13 was Carnival, put on by Dane, and then many ska shows. and A lot of shows put on by him have local bands. So I think it's ridiculous to accuse his entertainment of being non local.because he IS victoria. - Mon, 10 Mar 2003 11:13pm
