Well,

This show fucking kicked ass. I think I have been waiting to see Dimmu for 4-5 years as I just turned 19 and the last 1 or 2 times they came I couldn't find a fake. I almost went when I was 14 I think to hear them from the outside of the bar, didn't end up doing it actually. It was my first time at the Commodore and I was damn impressed with the sound and the place itself, it was really well done. I got there just as Kataklysm started, and fuck did they do a good job, but everyone knows their live reputation. As a drummer I was mostly impressed with the absolute precision their drummer had. Amazing job. Devil Driver just sucks I think, they bother me, with their over use of hardcore breakdowns and overdone vocals that are the same pattern always. So yeah, they shred live too but booerns, I've put up with them 2 times before now too..sigh. Unearth is not a band I enjoy either, but they also did a very impressive set with Gene Hoglan on drums! WTF? Like I love seeing Gene play but Unearth? He seems to be a ringer of Vancouver metal shows, I saw him fill in for Opeth once to. I ran into him after the show he is so huge. Anyways, Unearth was dece, but I question why Unearth and Devil Driver were even on this tour. Dimmu started and it still didn't really hit me that I was about to finally see them. Their set was short but had some solid tracks that I was happy to hear. I think the best song they did was Indoctrination, I fucking love the keyboard passages at the end, Mustis is a fucking musical genius, but you couldn't see him at all really. Insight in The Catharsis sounded like their worst song, although one of my favs. It was almost flawless but sounded muddled somehow, but might be a new drummer thing? I dunno. I never even imagined that they could perform their music, which has so many walls of melody and atmosphere with that kind precision. They sound like a band that is all studio and couldn't do it live, but they prove you wrong. Yes, no keyboard will sound exactly like a 30 string symphony, but it sounded great! Amazingly good show. Hellhammer did a dece drum solo but it was a little straightforward, but he slays. It was cool to see a drummer with so much old black metal history play with them, he was good. I saw Galder in cafe crepe before the show, he looks really funny with a huge moustache.

Good times, I'm gunna nap and recover so sore now. - Sat, 12 May 2007 5:55pm

Kataklysm was alright, Devil Driver was thinly veiled mallcore, although they did command the crowd more than Unearth who sucked more ass than could be imagined.

I wasn't there, but I would just like to mention how much Kataklysm used to kick fucking ass. Wow have they ever become 100% shit now (!!!!) and have been since Sylvain Houde parted. "The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation", "Sorcery", and "Temple of Knowledge" are brutal, chaotic DM (IMO) masterpieces!!! NOW they are nothing but watered down garbage.

Old news for sure ... but still very relevent in wake of their horrid present sound. - Tue, 15 May 2007 11:53pm

I saw this. It was a lot of fun. Held my date in with one arm and used the other to shield us, and bee-lined to the mosh pit. Fuck yeah. The floor was made of beer though, so moshing was really not an option and we just slammed into the forward crowd.

I'm not an active metal fan so everything sounded just fine to me. - Sat, 16 Jun 2007 3:11am
