martin I had a amazing weekend opening for Sam Roberts and his band and i'd just like to say that he is the new bob dylan, absolutely brilliant musically/lyrically, and it was the best fucking 5 days of my life.
I wish him all the best on the rest of the tour...
cheers,
Marty - Wed, 12 Feb 2003 12:00pm
Aran Right on Marty. So what exactly was on your rider? btw, I don't think Sam sings crappy enough to be the new Dylan. - Wed, 12 Feb 2003 1:11pm
Travis BEER - Wed, 12 Feb 2003 2:07pm
m when i refer to sam as the new dylan, i don't really mean that he sounds like him per say, it's just lyrically and musically he is so "high brow" (if you like) as a storyteller/songwriter, that i feel like he is in the same class as Dylan. on the other hand i could easily call him the new Lennon too.
how's that? get my point? - Wed, 12 Feb 2003 3:58pm
Skai Travis, could you mail me with your phone number, I lost it. - Wed, 12 Feb 2003 4:57pm
Aran Sure.. I was just poking fun. I have spent many evenings listenting to Dylan and laughing at how crappy his vocal ability was yet enjoying every song. As for you guys, how long of a set did you play? Any regrets etc? Must have been pretty cool to open up for a sold out commodore show. That place holds around 1000 people. A huge stage too. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 3:00am
m it was an intense experience. The commodore makes every bar i've ever played in look like a shitty dive.

from the equipement lifts, to the stage hands, to the green room. plus the crowd (sold out for two nights).

i'm not going to divulge the regrets i have...lol...it was a great time...every second of it. i can't wait till the next time i play at the commodore. - Thu, 13 Feb 2003 11:57am
Ike John Lennon? Bob Dylan? Are you fucking mad? I have seen Sam Roberts and he is good. Lyrically, he writes fairly well, but you cannot put him into the same arena as the aformentioned artists. Not even in the same stratosphere. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 12:42pm
m i can have my opinion can't i? - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 1:07pm
Anonymous ya you can and your band sucks. can't wait to play the commodore again eh? opening for who? try harder next time...write songs that aren't so derivative idiot... - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 2:49pm
Anonymous Stupid last post. That was a huge gig to land. Have you played there? Thought not. Grace did'nt play the show cause the suck you R-E-T-A-R-D. I'd love to have played that show, or a show like it. Tell us when you have played there, or a venue of it's stature. You are what's wrong with the "vic scene". Go get the peanut butter and the dog. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 3:04pm
Anonymous do i hear the band wagon calling? "we've saved you a seat ms. nocturnal". - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 4:40pm
Anonymous never even seen them play or heard the music. - Fri, 14 Feb 2003 5:40pm
Aran Well thanks for posting anyway Marty. Bob Dylan can't sing or play guitar for that matter but people dig it. Back to the show ( review ) .. did legends seem seriously like a dive by comparision? Perhaps the show should have been at the Royal. - Sat, 15 Feb 2003 12:24am
Ike Now Bob Dylan can't play the guitar? What the fuck. Bob Dylan may not be Yngwie Malmstein, but he can - and has - sure as shit put together some wicked chord progressions. And lyrically, the guy is virtually untouchable. I don't spend that much time listening to him, but seriously, don't be slaggin' Bob. - Sat, 15 Feb 2003 12:40pm
damnit!!! 1. Bob D is one of the greatest things to ever happen to music.

2. The show at Legends kicked fucking ass!! - Sat, 15 Feb 2003 3:48pm
Aran I still don't think Bob can play guitar very well. Chord progressions and musical ideas are certainly strong points but technical ability is not. You can be a crappy player and still make great songs. He also has a big nose. - Sun, 16 Feb 2003 2:35am

Bob Dylan has a big nose? That does it, I am throwing out all of his albums. Bastard. - Sun, 16 Feb 2003 2:10pm
Ike I can't listen to Steve Vai or Joe Sariani for more than 15 minutes. I can listen to Bob Dylan for at least an hour. Techincally better deifnately does NOT mean better musicality. But yeah, he does have a big nose. - Mon, 17 Feb 2003 12:53am
oscar meyer Listen to Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat off of Blonde on Blonde. It is the only studio track I know of that he has played lead guitar on. Very humourous. The man is a god though. - Tue, 18 Feb 2003 6:59pm
Anonymous Bob Dylan is actually a great player with amazing technical skill, study his progressions (and the inversions he plays) and you will see this. He doesn't shred, but that's a good thing in my opinion (although I like shredding, it's just done to impress) the skill lies in not shredding and still being interesting. - Tue, 18 Feb 2003 10:18pm
Jack Hoffe Bob Dylan is a decent guitarist...especially when considering the genre of music he propelled himself from...folk. Songs such as "Percy's Song" exhibit classic Dylanesque finger picking that is by no means simple. Additionally, Dylan sang and played with feeling...something that is seems to be foreign to modern music. I will never argue that Dylan had a pretty voice but he did use his voice as a complimentary tool for his thought provoking lyrics. Simply compare the Byrds Mr. Tambourine Man, and My Back Pages to Dylan's versions. Dylan paints a picture for the song whereas Roger McQuin sings along in that pretty kind of way. Personally, I'd prefer to listen to something sincere and thought provoking rather than plastic, sugar coated, lifeless vocals. Yet..to each their own. Perhaps in an ideal world everyone would have the same pretty nose and voice. That'd sure make record executives happy... - Wed, 19 Feb 2003 7:46pm
