Message Board > Show Reviews > Highway Star - Deep Purple Tribute Show, March 3rd @ Central Bar |
Mr. Hell User Info... | Being that Deep Purple was one of my earliest favorite rock bands, I had to go and check out this tribute. The crowd was surprisingly small for a show such as this. I figured all the aged and infirm would be there, but it was an even split of all generations. The band was fairly good overall. They hit most of the key signature bits that made Purp songs classic. The vocalist had the Gillan shriek down, but I found that he would cut it short far too often. He nailed Child In Time pretty much perfectly which made up for all the minor flaws in his performance. He looked like a washed up, just released from jail Aaron Clark...which oddly enough looked somewhat like Ian Gillan. The drummer was talented enough, but he added far too much of his own touch to a lot of the fills and tricks that Paice made famous. When I go to see a tribute, I am going to see how close to the original they can get, otherwise I might as well go watch Friday Night Murder play 70's rock classics. The bass player was adequate, but made me cringe a fair amount. The Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord were pretty much dead on in their appearance and playing. Aside from the minor gripes I have, they put on a good show and I got my money's worth. Great set and I'd go see them again...hopefully feeling healthier and more inebriated. If you like Deep Purple, don't miss Highway Star next time they come through town! - Thu, 9 Mar 2006 4:48pm | ||
