Message Board > Show Reviews > Feb 10 - The Deadbeats, The Burbs, Absent Tenant, Italian Edition @ Big Fernwood |
Ian User Info... | Had a great time at this show. Turnout seemed good although people definitely only stuck around for one or two bands. It would have been nice to see more people stay. The Deadbeats played a wicked sounding set. Everything was cool, and songs had a familiar style to them. Guitar tone through that cool Ampeg Fliptop was sweet. The Burbs: This is the first time I've seen them and it won't be the last. The crowd seemed to have a blast. I go to school with the singer - I never thought he'd be like that up on stage! Good classic style fun rock with a big sound especially in the last song. Absent Tenant: That would be my band. Italian Edition: This is the first time I've seen them since their first show, and they definitely have progressed. They sounded really tight and had a lot of energy on stage. Some catchy parts to the tunes as well. Matt - new bass amp sounds REALLY good. Overall: Probably the best sound I've heard at an all ages show. Jared worked really hard to make it happen that way and I really think that worked out. Let's hear what other people have to say about it... Thanks to everyone for coming out. - Sat, 11 Feb 2006 8:10am
Mutilashawn User Info... | The Burbs are the best rock band to ever hit any scene anywhere. Plus the sound WAS the best I've ever heard at Big Fernwood. Horray. - Sat, 11 Feb 2006 11:59am
alain User Info... | Thanks to everyone who came and to the bands for playing, it was a relatively flawless night, and I managed to just break even. It's too bad the crowd was in such heavy circulation; if everyone who payed had stayed to watch all the bands, the crowd would have been much bigger. Also, sorry to anyone who missed the deadbeats due to a scheduling conflict. Both bands were under the impression that they would play second, and though it was my original intent to have the deadbeats play second as advertised, I believe the issue was talked out between bands. The Deadbeats improved a lot since the last time I saw them. Definitely some cool stuff. The Burbs got a great reaction from the crowd. Absent Tenant = my band. Italian Edition played great. They're my new favorite. Great stage presence, all pro musicians, very solid, great songs, etc... Everyone got on stage for their last song, and I got to annoy Dave and play with his wah pedal. Again, Jared Mann did an excellent job on sound. Best I've heard. Any more reviews? I'd love to get some feedback. - Mon, 13 Feb 2006 12:37am
Matteus User Info... | I only could stay for the first three bands...but anyways. Yeah man, you're right, The sound there was really great, for the first two bands. Just a couple things (good and bad) At first I thought the sound guy had no idea what he was doing when he was making that horrible "white noise", but when the deadbeats came on, it sounded freakin' SWEET. (He explained what it was before they came on) Definately the best I have heard in there EVER. MAJOR PROPS TO SOUNDGUY!!! Harry just keeps getting better and better on that guitar man, lays some guitarists to shame! The bands timing is getting better too. I never heard the bassist sing before tho, there should be more of that and/or harmonies cuz he's got a decent voice. The burbs. The freakin' Burbs. Danno, the lead singer, is like a pastor of Rock. He gets that spirit just goin and everyone follows him... band and crowd. Vince wailed on guitar as always and Spence kicked it on bass (nice jump off the cab at the end) Absent tenant. This is where things went a little wonky. I am guessing the sound guy for the night was the singer for the band? Which seems dandy, but the levels kinda got all weird. First the whole thing was WAY TOO loud, then I mentioned it to the sound guy and he brought the levels down but the vocals just seem to have the hardest time cutting through which is sad really cause when I went over my video footage, these guys sound pretty good! One more point for A.T, is the bass player has to realize that his tone is DISTGUSTINGLY sweet (kinda reminds me of mudvayne's bass player) and that six string is just as sweet, but in Fernwood, you HAVE to keep that huge cab volume down or else you drown out the band. (this is something i find many guitarists/bassists do) I would see all these bands again for sure! Be interested in seeing A.T again with some proper levels (perhaps the singer could have mixed then let someone mix in his vocals next time?) Had to leave halfway through for another engagment, so I missed Italian Edition. I have video footage of the first three bands if they're keen. Might be starting a website again with bands and such on it again kinda like the old Hybrid site.... we'll see. (man that was long winded.....*shrug*) - Mon, 13 Feb 2006 11:57am
alain User Info... | Yeah, that pink noise is pretty crazy. If I didn't know what it was, it'd scare the hell out of me, thinking the sound guy screwed up. I think it's the first time I've seen anyone do this at an all ages show, and it was a good starting point for equalizing for what is known to be a horrible room for sound. I heard a lot of people say that the sound wasn't so great for our set, and that's probably for a couple reasons. First, our instruments started out at ridiculous levels, because we practice at really high volume, partially because the room we play in eats bass, etc... Also, since our singer was the sound guy, we had to have someone else do our sound, and while I know that the guy who did our sound is very tallented and is great at what he does, we weren't able to inform him of every detail of our massive setup, making it difficult to work with. For the little preparation we offered him, I think he did a great job. Ian does have great bass tone though eh? - Mon, 13 Feb 2006 1:18pm
hisrangled User Info... | the dog will set the sail. the set will sail the meaningless ocean through aimless waves of sound. the cat has four eyes. and the pig will look ominously at the plethora of flavours of nine young women. - Tue, 14 Feb 2006 1:49am

Ian User Info... | Thanks for the comments Matteus. "Disgustingly sweet" tone eh? Thanks a LOT. Nobody's ever really noticing much about it. Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne's bassist) has been a rather significant starting point for me so that's a pretty good observation. I'll definitely take your advice on the volume issue. I've seen other bands play there and noticed similar problems with the bass drowing out bands. It sounds totally fine on stage but gets huge out front. I appreciate the feedback since not many people keep an ear out for bass or are willing to simply say "your tone kicked arse but you were actually too loud." Next time we do a show it'd be great to see you out again, and we'll have the levels sorted out. - Wed, 15 Feb 2006 7:38am
