Lurker User Info... | First off, it sucked to hear that Drag Strip Riot didn't make it across the border, so the show was down to two bands (and one dancin' girl) which I guess is why it seemed like the start time got pushed back quite a bit. That said, Bettina (formerly of the Bettilu Bombshells) started the night off - warming up the crowd by getting (almost) naked to a song that I think was called "Red Headed Woman" which was very well done and totally suited the performance (I thought all of the songs that Bettina picked were good choices for her performances). After Bettina came Juho & the Rockin' Eskimos (I think I read that this band was formerly the Twilighters?) who gave us a fantastic display of traditional rockabilly. From the onset of "Blackberry Boogie" to the end of the last song, Juho gave us a great danceable set of almost entirely original material (there was a Charlie Feathers cover in there somewhere) that got the greasers and the hot rodders goin' and set the stage for the Switchblade Valentines to come. Before S.V. did perform, we got another couple of very enjoyable burlesque performances from Bettina. Her cowgirl routine was quite nice though I personally didn't feel she needed to be a "drunken cowgirl" but that's probably because I'm one of those straight-edge kids that doesn't know how to have any fun, right? Good times, nevertheless. The Switchblade Valentines (after some minor technical difficulties with their upright bass at the start of the set) once again re-affirmed my belief that they are the best live act on Vancouver Island today. Energetic, fun psychobilly that whipped the punks, greasers, and skins alike into a frenzy on the dancefloor and definitely left the crowd wanting more. Too bad their CD wasn't ready but I guess we can all look forward to it in July when the Deadcats and Matadors come to the Island. Sucks driving back to Nanaimo after the show and not getting home until quarter to four, but well worth it for a great show from some very talented bands. - Sat, 25 Jun 2005 9:43am
rickylong User Info... | Yes sir Frazer Johnson! Haveing the busiest Island Invasion weekend i didn't get the opertunitiy to give my usual banter.... but i think Mr Johnsons review summs it up! I have to say i did some time working in a small country town (sooke) and grew to like the old country music, Juho and the Eskimos should probably do a few nights at the local Legions in small towns... i can see them makin all those beehive old women and retired loggers rip up the dancefloor. I did like this band! The Valentines again made the dancefloor get used. Watch out.... it'll be fun to see what happens to these guys when they start playing of this rock! I think they should do well! I had fun and even got the oppertunity to tag (jaks) on a nice 57 Ranchero parked outside! To help the owner out and make his car look even cooler i stuck a Keg Killers sticker on the back window! bye for now -whitney houston - Mon, 27 Jun 2005 8:37pm
Christopher Walken User Info... | Personally I was shocked by the lack of eskimos. No blubber, no ice, not even a eskimo nose kiss, and whenever I'd try to perform one I'd get a look like "what are you doing?" - OUCH. besides that I thought the musical guests were the tops. - Wed, 29 Jun 2005 10:40am
