videomaker User Info... | Nine south Island bands donated their talents to help Providence Farm's seniors programs during last weekend's Spring Sayonara family dance in the farm's therapeutic riding ring. Colleen Davis, the farm's rehabilitation manager, said the inaugural event could become an annual show pending success of the June 18 gig for all ages. Most of the bands were out of the Cowichan Valley except Black Tie Social, Killing Flaw, and Nomadik Logik from Victoria." Other bands include Where's Veronica? Full Harvest, Audible Blue, Bex, DJ Groda and Freedom Toast. The event was directed at young families. An all-ages show for teenagers and lots of kids activities for young families." Half of the proceeds from the intergenerational dance went to assist the St. Ann's Garden Club horticultural therapy program for seniors and also provided seed money for next year's Sayonara. The nine-band roster spanned a variety of musical styles. Where's Veronica? plays spy rock while Black Tie Social performs alt-pop. Killing Flaw's electronica rock contrasts with Full Harvest's roots-reggae-dub tunes. Nomadik Logik offers live PA hip-hop while Audible Blue plays alt-folk. Singer Bex's acoustic folk songs contrast with DJ Groda's conscious hip hop, dub, jungle and world beat music. Freedom Toast describes its music as freaky pop. The event was non-licensed and snacks were available. The above was altered from the original media release. I will include some pics in my review also. So here it is. Freedom Toast was toasty. Great guitar and vocals with competent keys. Solid bass and free form non-formulaic drums. They mixed it up with Jazz originals too! Great. Full Harvest Reggaefied up da place. Great dancing tunes. Killing Flaw totally ripped the stage up. Heavy duty with raunchy vocals and killer guitar sounds. Much better than I heard them last time at Big Fernwood some months ago. Bex shows promise as a singer songwriter. Good voice and plays guitar very well. This is one very talented young woman. There was also a guy who came in last minute due to a cancellation. I can’t remember his name but he was really great. He met a guy in the parking lot who stood in for him on drums and a bit of background vocals. The fellow played slide on an electric ES 125 copy that totally had this great resonance thing happening. His amp was fried and emitted a reverb “poing” every once in a while but his playing was sweet. He really has a great voice with a mature lyrical sensibility too. References a young Bob Dylan but this kid has a great singing voice!!! Anyone know his name? Let me know so I can post a few pics of him also. Didn’t get a chance to hear the DJ Groda’s set but he sure had a great rig. A full sized MCI Bus that was able to fit in the room with room for 500 people+!!! Black Tie Social played a good solid set. They took chances musically and vocally and they connected well with each other and the audience. The soundman had a good system there and was very accommodating to the band. The volunteers were incredible and I give the whole idea, promotion and gig a solid recommendation. Many thanks to the Sisters of St. Ann’s again for supporting local music and worthwhile programs for their community. I would love to be involved in anything like this again next year. - Mon, 20 Jun 2005 5:17pm

Will User Info... | Hey Videomaker! Glad you enjoyed yourself at the show, as of right now it was considered a success and we'll be able to throw another one next year...it was a cool event and a nice eclectic mix of music. Thanks for the kind comments. Did you leave right after Killing Flaw? Also, the guy you're talking about is Reid Williams. I'll tell him to check this site out. - Tue, 21 Jun 2005 7:35am

Haden User Info... | You must have left right after Black Tie. I arrived late and Freedom Toast was playing their last tune. The reviews I received from friends, I won't be missing their next show. I was doing a bit of running around, so I didn't really get to catch alot of the sets for the bands. Black Tie Social was decent, but too much of a downer for me. The drummer though, he played solid. Full Harvest was great. I really liked the vocals and the band was a perfect suit for the crowd and the vibe in the barn. I enjoyed Killing Flaws show, but I think the venue and crowd weren't quite right....I'm not even sure if they had fun because they hid up in the VIP room all night....snobs ;P Plus, I don't think any band would want to follow the reggae act as they had the crowd hoppin'. What can I say about Where's Veronica?. Man. Night in day to the Lucky show they played in December, where it seemed nothing could go right. It was the tighest I've seen them play and the crowd was lovin' it. I'm really looking forward to checking out the show at Steamers tomorrow night. Not sure what the name of the last group was, but I believe I had seen them last month opening up for The Chicharones. I know nothing about hip hop, so my opinion means very little. It's not my bag. I hope this does become a yearly event. I think the barn is a perfect venue. The acoustics were surprisingly good. I look forward to the show that Colleen and crew put together. - Tue, 21 Jun 2005 3:24pm

Flip Flop User Info... | Back to the show. Great music. Great venue. Great organization. But how can anyone not go off about Wheres Veronica. Where did these guys come from. I heard they were good. They were GREAT. In my opinion they are the best band on the island and everyone should go check them out. Except emo rockers and punks and metal freaks. Wheres Veronica had it all. Funky dance beats, rockin guitar solos, solid bass, sweet ass drumming, and some keyboard player who played trumpet and keys at the same time. I dont know really what category they fit in but it was some wicked weird tricky dance rock. The best was their last song that was a surfer rock thing when they invited people to dance on stage with them and yelled "drunk tank" a few times. And then I yelled my face off and they did an encore of Radiohead's National Anthem. OMG I was freaking. Go see these guys. Everyone! They are playing tonight at Steamers. - Wed, 22 Jun 2005 1:53pm
VideoMaker User Info... | I hear Where's Veronica is on at about 11 PM tonight. Past my bedtime but I hope I can stay up that late. With the above endorsement I should really check these guys out. - Wed, 22 Jun 2005 3:29pm

PrincessP User Info... | We had a wicked time! And there was a very good reason for hanging in the VIP lounge and that reason is spelt K.E.G. I watched most of the bands from outside through a little window behind the ice cream truck. Where's Veronica takes the cake they were fantastic. - Thu, 23 Jun 2005 6:09pm
