john User Info... | I recently attended the Sasquatch music festical at the Gorge in Washington, it was a very fun time. OF the bands I saw I would have to saw the award for most impressive goes to ARCADE FIRE. I am not going to say anyting self righteous like "The Best Band Out There" But that was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen on stage, if not THE most amazing. I didn't really dig WILCO... BLOC PARTY was really awesome I had heard so many bad things about their loive show but all those were put to rest. Extremely tight, good stage presence seemed like nice guys happy to be up there, technical difficulties but thats not their fault... a great show. I was thoroughly impressed by KANYE WEST'S performance, he was able to grab a crowed and have a fun time regardless of him being the only rapper there and being plugged between ARCADE FIRE and WILCO. I was disapointed with the PIXIES was an amazing thing to see them, but everything that ARCADE FIRE had that made their set amazing, the opposite was true of the PIXIES. wastching the PIXIES play made me feel like music is a job and not a passion. they played awesome songs, but did it while staying basically motionless and uninterested with the show. they rarely commucated witht he crowed or each other, but they played "monkeys gone to heaven" so i really coulnt care less cause that was still amazing. the DEARS were awesome, UNITED STATES OF ELECTRONICA were really cool wish i had seen all of em, SMOOSH was soo cool. I know I missed great bands, but also saw great bands, the show was really cool and fun. The highlights were ARCADE FIRE, BLOC PARTY. the lowlights were the excrucating heat and the fact people from victoria saw me dressed like an idiot. But it was hot as hell, and still cool seeing kris and chrystal... if that makes any sense... love. - Mon, 30 May 2005 12:13am
Kris User Info... | ok here we go: Math and Physics Club: Didn't catch much but they were tight, had a folk indie feel. Aqueduct: They were fun. and they played a"damn it feels good to be a gangster" cover so that is just kick ass. USE: Heard too very dancy songs, but it was way to hot to dance at this point. Menomena: These guys were awesome, straight up, i am going to try and purchase this disk. Smoosh: I think the whole smoosh thing is a little gimmicy. The Dears: The Dears were really kick ass. and I mean really good, really tight, really fun...i think one of the highlights of my day. AC Newman: I liked AC newman but left half way through his set to get good seats for the arcade fire. The Arcade Fire: AMAZING INCREDIBLE AND FUCKING AWESOME. Best band of the day. I am very tempted to say this is the best live performance i have ever seen. reaffirmed my faith in all their publicity. Wilco: ALSO AMAZING. wilco were so tight and played all my favorites (except radio cure...not that it was much of a radio cure crowd). but when they played jesus etc. i was in heaven. super awesome. and some wicked noise solos. Then I got food Joanna Newsom: Another highlight of the day. joanna newsom is so talented it blows my mind. everyone was super chilled out as she played as the sun was going down. she just kicked ass nuff said. Modest Mouse: I was hugely dissapointed by modest mouse' set. they didn't really do anything of interest to me. Matisayuh: Cool dub reggae trip out music i guess...i wasn't quite in the mood. The Pixies: Their set was really poppy. When I saw them a year ago at the curling club it was way less manufactured and way more punk and grungy. I didn't really enjoy them at this festival. even bone machine sounded pussy. it was weird. and yeah they did make music look like a job. I guess they are getting old. but they were tight none the less. this festival was fucking awesome. - Mon, 30 May 2005 5:07am
zack User Info... | Highlights for sure were bloc party, arcade fire, kanye west and the dears. All of them truly lived up to expectations, especially kanye for which i had none. Another couple bands that i was really happy to have heard were the bobby bare jrs who fucking laid it down with everyth9ing they had - somthing to be absolutely respectedc. Also the frames were pretty rad, noisy and trippy. Smoosh is gonna be so hot someday...and i'm glad they're getting the chance to play these sorts of shows when they're like 12 or whatever, imagine the performers they'll be when they're older. The pixies were one of the main draws for me as i haven't seen them before, but they thouroughly disappointed me. Modest Mouse i thought was alright, but I'm not super into them anyways, all their songs sound awfully similar to one another. I did give them some cool points for having two drummers though, they sure made it work. I needed shade by the time wilco came around, so i completely missed their entire set, so i'm kicking myself about that. Moral of the story, bloc party is going to be even bigger than they already are starting to be, the pixies were disappointing, and it was fucking unbelievably hot to the extreme. - Mon, 30 May 2005 8:32am
Soap Dodger User Info... | I’m really glad I made a last minute decision to go. Going in I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the bands, but had a passing interest in some and was curious to see them live. To re-iterate what others have said, The Arcade Fire stole the show. The emotion and intensity of their live show far surpassed that of their CD (which is still pretty good), and was un-matched by any of the artists I saw. It was inspiring to see eight of them, lined up on stage, giving everything they had. One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Other highlights were Bloc Party and Modest Mouse. I would liked to have seen Wilco, up close, but needed some time to chill in the shade after eight hours of 95% weather and quite a few beers. They sounded good from up top, however. The Pixies were a let down – they sounded decent, but had no energy. Kanye West didn’t really belong there. His set wasn’t that interesting or original, and had no flow. At least he called himself out for an encore though – that was a classy move. All in all, it was a great weekend. The George is a sweet venue. Next time I’ll find a way to sneak some liquor in, however. The “Beverage Enforcement” staff were a bit of a joke - and it’s pretty annoying when the serving staff act like they’re doing you a fucking favor charging you $8 for a Coors-lite. - Mon, 30 May 2005 8:36am
john User Info... | the dears are on jimmy kimmel live and bloc party in on letterman. tonight. ps i saw some chick get kicked out of the concert at like 2pm cause she was underage drinking (shitty deal)... the beer was the most reasonable priced thing there... 5 bucks for a beer or 4.50 for water... 3.50 for a small bag of chips... 6.50 for some pizza... 6.50 for a smoothy... but the 7bucks for the rice bowl was worth every penny. - Tue, 31 May 2005 2:30pm
jenko User Info... | Ah, the Gorge... Amazing venue for the natural beauty; definitely sucks that there was no re-entry for a 12.5 hour show, and everything there food & bevvy-wise was WAY overpriced! And now, the reviews: The Dears: great songs, wonderful voices (too bad mr. sound guy snoozed through their set) and a nice surprise. A.C. Newman: this guy has a lot of hype surrounding him. I have no idea why. Ray Lamontaine: great voice, nice simple songs, but not really engaging. Arcade Fire: what can I say, they TOTALLY lived up to all the hype, even after playing in Spain the night before. They have it all- great songs, HUGE energy, unique ideas, BANG ON! Wilco: uh, the ONLY band there that could have followed Arcade Fire and not sounded like amateur night... they opened with a very subdued Muzzle of Bees and slowly built up to the big rock...tightest performance i've ever seen, to be sure. Nels Cline is a very scary guitar abuser!! Highlight for me. Kanye West: a little out of place, i thought. the crowd on the tarmac was really into him, I was not. Joanna Newsom: even though i could barely stand, her stunning performance left me, well, stunned. A true original! Modest Mouse: I've never been a fan, but they really grew on me. Pleasantly more subtle than I was expecting. Pixies: BORING. I left. i saw bits and pieces of lots of other acts, but not enough to comment, really. All in all, a great day of music (and blistering heat!) - Tue, 31 May 2005 2:52pm
