I missed Self Inflicted

Despised Icon was ok. They had some great blasting (gravity even) and their one vocalist was good. The hardcore vocalist was annoying with his floor punches and karate chops. Plus he had a hissy fit at the end when nobody would mosh. I could have done without the breakdowns . . .

Ion Dissonance was incredible as they were last year. New bassist but he still held his own. As someone said, this genre of music (mathcore or what have you) is much more entertaining to see live than listen to at home. They were energetic and extremely entertaining. They played the good songs on their CD.

Overall a descent show . . . not spectacular but not awful. - Wed, 13 Apr 2005 12:01pm

I liked both bands alot.. some killer drumming from Despised Icon and some nice pick work from their guitarists.

here's a cool link to the DI drummer, and a bunch of other killer drummers, a showcase of good drummers really

The show was alright I suppose. For me the highlight of the night was to see Self-Inflicted do a hardcore version of Twisted Sister's Burn In Hell. Despised Icon were so-so. The musicianship was good, and the one grind-vocalist was good, but The hardcore singer was not my cup of tea. I couldn't stop laughing at his funny dance moves. (He looks like Seasons Of Sorrow's bassist). Ion Dissonance were prety good. Very tight act, if your into the whole morse-code-core scene.

Hopefully Lucky Bar will wake up and realize that there is more to metal than than just hardcore acts. It would be nice to see more death metal, black metal, and power metal. The hardcore boat has sailed, and that seems to be the only kind of big metal acts Lucky is willing to get. Anyway thats my rant.

Self-Inflicted was excellent ,I'd seen them years ago but can't really remember or maybe I'm a victim of repressed memory syndrome ? Very professional and talented folks , you bet I'll be trying to catch more of your shows in the future !
Despised Icon was ok but I got a little sick of the kachunk kachunk and the flailing of the singers .
Ion Dissonance were very good, real musicians and made me feel inadequate about my own playing ! These guys were gelling this night !
Got to meet the people in the bands afterwards and smoked a joint (Blueberry) with them ,real nice guys .It was a great night for a Tuesday! - Wed, 13 Apr 2005 7:03pm

Jaron, Lucky only provided the venue, Scott of Bosevus actually promoted this show.. as with many metal shows there, they are promoted from outside. Its also a matter of who is touring.. Lucky will book those bands, but the bands need to come here first. They are definately supportive of metal in all forms.

and hey, Into Eternity not powermetal enough for ya? :P

okok they are more like prog-power-death... - Wed, 13 Apr 2005 10:37pm

Thanks for the response Mike. Jaron, Mike is right. It is more about the bands that are available and what other promoters offer us than my personal taste in music. By, the way, I thought that the Buried Inside show was probably the best show we have had this year and I am really bummed that I am going to miss Into Eternity this Friday. If the bands are out there and (this is the big part)if the people are willing to come out to see them then I will book the shows. It may be hard to believe but I don't get offered alot of black metal shows.
Ben
ps. I enjoyed the show last night and thank you to everyone who came out on a Tuesday night. I really enjoy cool metal shows and want to do more of them. It has to make financial sense as well though. - Thu, 14 Apr 2005 2:59am

Hey Jaron, yeah I promoted the show, as well as the Into Eternity show this Friday, as well as the Buried Inside Show (any many many others). And it really is about who's touring at the time, and who's willing to come for a price that is affordable.

I think I do a pretty good job bringing differnt styles of music to town within the punk/metal genres, and if you know of someone comming though the area that you really think would be awsome to play here let me (or Ben for that matter) know and if we can make it work we probably will. - Thu, 14 Apr 2005 4:42pm

I just want to say that that was the most fun I've ever had on a Tuesday!
Caught Self Inflicted's last three songs. Catchy and heavy as always. Sarah is not bored looking anymore and Lincoln was THE man as per usual.
Despised Icon was who I came to see. They were really good and all, but I prefer their old material to their new stuff. At times their sound was muddy, but they were still really good to experience live.
Ion Dissonance...WOW! Rare to see a band that writes good mathmetal, nevermind writes great songs within the mathmetal. Their music had me totally enraptured for their entire, short set. Most impressive and their sound was excellent! Very clear...could hear every note.
IMNSHO, Ion Dissonance owned Tuesday night at Lucky Bar.
Thanks to Bram for pretending to understand my drunken ramblings. Hats off to Scott for having the brass balls to do that show on that night!
Everyone should come to Friday's show, if not to support the bands, then to support Scott who does a great job bringing music to Victoria. - Thu, 14 Apr 2005 4:53pm

I can’t make it down tomorrow and the peeps that are coming with me can't get there either ,it's for my deathday and you know I'll be there, pay up and not fuck yea around . Or you can just take it out of the Meat's pay envelope, I hear they just got endorsements from Trojan condoms for their new Meat 7 prophylactic made for those crooked dickers out there ! - Thu, 14 Apr 2005 6:33pm

Scott,

No disrespect intended. You DO do a great job of bringing in bands. I do understand that the band has to be touring for you to book them. I guess my only complaint is that it would be nice to see a bit more variation. I mean Buried Inside, Despised Icon, Ion Dissonance - all hardcore. How about some Vancouver black metal acts like Demyse? or Infernal Majesty? what about getting Exhumed back? Black metal band Obscurcis Romancia from Montreal will be releasing a new album soon. How about getting them when they stop thru? I know the really big acts (ie. Cannibal Corpse, GWAR, etc.) are usually booked by Sugar Night Club (seeing as its a bigger venue), but surely it can't just be hardcore bands that tour here. Granted I don't know the politics behind it all, but speaking purely as a metal fan, and someone who enjoys a good show, it would be nice to see a bit more variation. Call me picky. Really looking forward to Into Eternity by the way. Good on ya!

Ive been talking to Augury, and they really want to come.

Also, its hard to contact bands sometimes, you need them to contact you, most bands know there is a scene here, but they also have to be prepared to take losses. For instance.. this past show, two bands + two vehicles w/ trailer = about $400 just to pay for ferries and and off the island, not to mention gas food and lodging ( altho me and Scott put up the two bands ) So when 60 or so people show up as at Tuesdays show, the bands take a massive loss, or Scott does. It isnt very tempting to alot of bands or promoters.

But at the same time, both bands are connected to labels who have alot to offer in the future, ( Century Media, Abacus, Galy Records - incl Augury, Infernal, Obscurcis Romancia,) so turning out to support can benefit down the road. And gauranteed the labels hear there is a strong weekday scene they will take note.

Tonights show should be a good one, Ill be putting up the band and some of Omega Crom.. But stay away from Rob D. he still has Pnuemonia! - Fri, 15 Apr 2005 10:44am

I thought all three bands ruled the night. SI...new material rules. Despised....dual vocals slays, grindcore with flavor. I just loved it. Ion.....Too much talent to pick someone out, but, well, ok, the vocalist left me wonderin what I'm doing? That guy was sooo impressive. If only every Tues night was that kick ass. Great job Scott!! - Fri, 15 Apr 2005 5:40pm
