This was an amazing show. I went due to being unable to go to the Comeback Kid / Bane / With Honor hardcore show in Seattle. I definetely wasn't let down by my backup plan.

Initial impression: Wow. So many scenesters. I'm used to the scene in Victoria so seeing all the nanaimo scene kids blew me away. There were hundreds of kids, all around 13-21. The majority of people were all into fashioncore/screamo/scenester attire. I met some really awesome kids. I believe a lot were from other areas all over the island and such, based on the kincaide signup sheet.

Kincaide was up first. This was my sixth time seeing them. They were great, as always. I was impressed with how into them everyone was. There were... sing-alongs and lots of kids moving around. Wow. They played some new songs and there was a lot of energy. A great opening experience.

Then was.. careworn I believe. I didn't like their style. I'm not sure what to call it and I don't think it's my place to critique them for it since they're good at what they try to do. I was one of the kids who had started hardcore dancing for fun, especially since it didn't suit the music. There was still lots of moshing by others, our self-declared pit was more something in the middle/back.

Veritas was next I believe. I was really really suprised and blown away. It was an intense aural experience. Progressive noise screamo grindcore... I guess those are words I could use to describe them. I really liked their sound. It was like they were past any ordinary musical structure and had their own way of expressing pure emotion beyond any other way. I regret not buying their cd. Everything was really well-written... a lot of bands in this style seem unpleasantly chaotic but this band had planned things out really well. I'm not doing a great job at describing it. I would definetely check these guys out again. Awesome stuff, probably my second favourite of the night.

Elizabeth was next. They sounded to me like a unique-sounding indieish band. I enjoyed them. Tessa bought their cd and I think I may have to give it a listen.

Controller.controller I couldn't really get into. A lot of people seemed to like them but I didn't like their approach to the vocals and style of music. The one thing I did like was the sound-manipulation. Pretty cool.

Then of course the highlight of the night.

Death From Above 1979.

I was right by the vocoder and bass amp, in front, and I took a hell of a lot of pictures and some videos. I will be uploading them somewhere soon so watch for that. Anyway there was some intense equipment setup, they take a lot of work and equipment to get the sound they want.

When they started playing, it was so awesome. I'm so amazed that just two guys... one on drums/vocals and one on bass/synth/vocals can do SO much. The bass literally sounds like a bass and two guitars. They played all the songs we love and had a lot of energy. It was a freaking awesome experience. Everyone got really into it from what I could tell... there was a chain of people in front to keep moshers from hurting any delicate equipment as there is no stage in the venue.

Seeing them made the drive to Nanaimo from Victoria, and the insane lack of sleep today before school, completely worth it. I was with some great people and had a great time. I picked up a DFA 1979 white tour shirt in small.. it fits me a little oddly but it really cool.

If they ever stop by or near again, I'm there. So glad to see such a great band. - Mon, 4 Apr 2005 5:30pm

Its all Vic kids on here partly because of the hub city underground. http://www.hubcityunderground.tk. unfortunately the site got lost but the forum still works. most nanaimo peeps just post shit on there.

And yes the show was amazing. I'll say no more out of laziness. - Tue, 5 Apr 2005 1:27pm

Saw them at Sugar last night, they fucking ruled yet again. saw them last time they were here as well. Once again I am totally blown away watching two guys make that much noise.... and be that good at it. It's a shame they seem to be getting sucked up by the emo kids....... - Tue, 5 Apr 2005 3:09pm

I really enjoyed Elizabeth once again, as for controller.controller they were a little disapointing. Death from above were lots of fun, with great stage presence as well. - Wed, 6 Apr 2005 9:42am
