I went to this show before the other show at the Fifty Fifty.

I missed Fatal Error, sorry Dan, but I heard they played Internet Porn and that makes me smile.

SUPERNOVA was next I believe. I didn't like their style at all but still I wish them the best of luck.

Then was Next of Kin. I guess they were power pop. I did like the Final Countdown cover and I had fun during their set. I took a few pictures of the band and bass player/singer.

Then was Combat Wombat. I personally think that the horn lines were ok but the song construction needs some serious work. Plus there was quite a lack of energy and organization. I think that they should work on things more before doing another show. I do applaud the use of groupie-dancers to try and stir up the crowd. And the guitarist sounded pretty good.

I left partway through Combat Wombat which is a shame because I would have liked to see Maurice. How were they?

There seemed to be a huge lack of people there. I think there fluctuated between 5 and 30 non-band members.

I have pictures that I will soon post. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 2:16am

baaaaaad show in my opinion, i only got to see a bit of Combat Wambat and it wasnt bad from what i saw, some organization issues but other that that it was allright. Then came our show; drums were moving all the time every time he hit them, and my bass decided to cut out on me. good old American crap.

It was sort of a strange show. I had a good time, but $8 is pretty steep for a show that was, how should i say, not the best it could have been.

Fatal Error - played, what i would say, their best show to date, but almost no one was there to hear it.

Supernova - Not exactly my music, but t'was fun.

Next of kin - I really like this band, and I really liked the cover. I would so like to hear them play some rush.

Combat Wombat - They have improved a lot since the last time I saw them. This time i did notice a bit of disorganization in some of the songs. I do remember in my last review of them I gave of them, I said they needed to "pick it up." and pick it up they did. good work guys, keep it up.

Maurice - really good. Not their best show of their's I have seen, but it was still very good. I really liked the waltz demonstration.

and perhaps if someone and put a big carpet under the drum kit, it wouldn't have slid around so much.

all in all, an above-average show that I had fun at, but could have been better. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 3:38pm

Haha, that's funny, our drummer is obsessed with Rush! Thanks a lot to the people that came, and stuck around till the end. I hadn't ever seen Maurice before and they were really good, one of the best local bands I've seen lately. I thought they were really tight and had some great filler inbetween songs to entertain the crowd (aka the singer and keyboardist waltzing together).

The night started out pretty badly with probably 5 people watching that weren't in the other bands, but it wasn't too bad by the end. I thought all the other bands did great despite the small crowd, and all 5 bands had a really different sound from each other. Not all my kind of music but congrats none the less.

Not our best show with the drums sliding all over the place and some tech mishaps, but still fun to play. - Sat, 26 Feb 2005 4:10pm

Its sort of a golden rule that the drummer always brings his own carpet so if the venue doesn't have one, the drummer doesn't have this problem
However, i loved the maurice recordings! Haven't seen you guys for a while but you presence sticks in my head. - Sun, 27 Feb 2005 9:08am

Hey It's ryan the drummer from Next of kin/GFY, and I agree that the guy who brought the drums should have brought the carpet! by the way flattering picture of my bass playing lead singing girlfriend! P.S. can I have a copy of the picture? - Sun, 27 Feb 2005 1:35pm

I want Maurice recordings too! CD anytime soon?

Anyways, a couple of things. Firstly, it wouldn't be Big Fernwood's fault about how the show ran really. It's moreso an inexperienced promoter. There is a mat upstairs by the door that you can use to put the drumset on if you don't bring your own carpet (whoa, yeah, even I have my own carpet.) The sound wasn't that great, too. Were the guitar amps not miced?

Also, I think the low turnout can be attributed to the $8 price. Not many kids want to spend that much for a show with only one "big puller" (term used loosely.)

Despite those things I had a lot of fun, the bands are what really make the show and they were great.

Fatal Error - I missed most of their set but from what I did see this was probably the best set I've seen them play yet. The new drummer is good and Aaron sure knows how to dance.

Supernova - Not really my thing. They had a nicely polished sound and were good at what they were doing, though.

Next Of Kin - They were so much fun to dance to. I third the Rush cover suggestion. The Final Countdown cover was rad.

Combat Wombat - I think this was the best I've seen them perform of the three times I've seen them. Good horns section, catchy hooks, and very danceable. Fun band.

Maurice - I agree with D'arcy that this isn't the best show I've seen them play, I think they fit a lot better in smaller venues. They still sounded great though, excellent interaction with the crowd and awesome tunes. One of the best bands in town, I think. Is the Long Gone Lonesome Blues cover strictly for accoustic performances? - Sun, 27 Feb 2005 7:56pm

Yes, Maurice has recordings from like 2 years ago, but until now they were not aloud to be 'released' to anyone b/c of legal rights. There are only a few copies of a 12 song demo cd floating around so good luck! Their first CD is due out early next year as far as I know. - Thu, 10 Mar 2005 11:07am

never heard any of these bands but the name Combat Wombat fucking rules. Now are you talking about a wombat ready for combat or a humans vs wombats scenario? I've had nightmares about that. - Thu, 10 Mar 2005 11:38am
