This is a mishmash of my Friday night.. first I went over to the Astoria and caught just 10 minutes of Buckle Up Russia with, I think someone said, the old 3" drummer - so the I guess thats why the place was fairly full that early. Nice, warm, melodic, heavy.. something I think I might one day get into if I catch a full set!

Then I bussed over to Pub 340 for The Midgets who I'd seen once before at the Cobalt and was stoked about. Really hillarious, a ton of energy, surprisingly capable players given they're all about 19.. a lot tighter last time I saw them, but lots of personality and presence. One guy's got a FULL ON MULLET! So congrats on that!!

Then I ran up and tried to hit the Zeke/Blk Halos at the Red Room, but I messed up and got there too late. No times were listed for the show and they boot everyone out early to let in the dance crowd who obviously PAY THE BILLS! So don't talk shit about them..

So I ran back to the Brickyard for the last part of Widowmaker.. a really popular band who stick out as a totally solid, committed, old-school metal band. I think if you're serious about metal, this is a live band you need to check out. I'm not qualified to write about them, but they do deserve for someone to. I was fairly impressed, as I was last time, and need to see a full set.

Then I lost steam. I headed back to 340 for Savannah but found them way too brutal and heavy, for my mood, I guess. Wow. ok, I'm a wimp.

Went back to the B'yard for The Golers.. as usual, can't miss with them.. whether they pull through with an especially tight performance or not, there's something reassuring and real about a Golers show. Other times they prove they can take on anyone.
Omega Crom.. can't deny they've got maybe the best metal vocalist in town, lots of character, and you can't ignore the guitar skills. Drums were solid. Apart from that, straight up people, from what I can tell, and one of the most supportive local bands, when it comes to their friends and the metal scene in general. That counts for a lot.
Zuckuss ended things off. They're one of my very favorite bands (as are Tendo), left me awestruck at their last show at the Astoria, and yet I left part way through their set.

I don't know whether it was due to poor sound (I couldn't hear enough seperation), my lack of energy, or just a flat night for everyone in general, but no band nor instrumentalist truly caught my attention that night. And with 4 bands of that calibre that shouldn't have been the case. Each one of them are qualified to headline any night, and do regularly, so I'm stumped. Maybe I'm just lame and tired so my perception's off. - Sat, 30 Oct 2004 3:27pm

We checked out the Brickyard show. BTW, where do you find all that energy to do all that club hopping? No wonder you were tired.

Arrived halfway through the Golers. Great stuff as usual. Definitely one of my local faves. They are as tight as hell. Omega Crom as always put on a hell of a performance. Stu is a great vocalist nice transitions from highs to lows. Their new song is good. Zuckuss is cool for the grindy stuff. I remember them from way way back, in fact, booked their first show back at the Parasite Club. I just love the getup on Chewie, that absolutely rocks. Actually, I began to wonder whether he is portraying a terrorist or a Jawa from Star Wars (maybe I should ask him). The latter would make more sense as they are "Star Wars inspired Porno Grind". Needs the glowing eyes though to look more like a Jawa. Hell, I think the whole band should dress up like Star Wars characters. That would be cool. Bring on the Stormtroopers!!!! - Tue, 2 Nov 2004 8:58am
