I liked the show, it was fun, good bands, good music. Though some assholes fucked with some windows, it could cost all ager shows to be done with at james bay community center :(

Kenny you are a goofball. I love you.
Thanks guys, it was going really well right up until those morons showed up. I was just thinking, "wow, it's the first time I've honestly broken even since the beginning of August", and then a door got kicked in and a window was broken. So there goes all the money I made back for the venue rental.
I'm pretty surprised by what happened tonight. Usually there are drunks but they are fairly discreet or only a little obnoxious. But these fools pushed it past that into serious stupidity. Thanks to those girls who broke the window and their friends (the two guys who "weren't drunk" but stumbling around in a daze) we've probably permanently lost what was one of the best all-ages venues in town. - Sun, 10 Oct 2004 12:46am

Unfortunate about the windows but what about the show. Hands down Self Inflicted ruled this one. Everyone was throwin' down when they played and their new songs were cool. Genuinely a good time! Born of Ashes was pretty awesome also. I had never seen Discord and I would definately go see them again. Cross your fingers that the JBCC doesn't become a lost venue. - Sun, 10 Oct 2004 11:08am

O.K. Biatches, anyone who missed S.I.C.K. needs to seriously give their fucking head a shake. Aside from the horribly solid state guitar tone they kicked ass, and dude, they have the metal guy from the Quadra Mohawk on drums, it just doesn't get better than that!
Dischord fucking ruled, Minor Threat covers always do it for me. They are getting better every time I see them.
Self Inflicted were fucking awesome as usual, the new bass player really held her own out there. It's kind of funny that while they were playing some unwanted guests showed up (you know who you are)
Born of Ashes really surprised me, not what I was expecting at all, and in a good way. They were sweet, and pretty energetic on stage, and such rad dudes.
And I am so stoked we played five songs in under ten minutes. It was definately one of the funnest sets I have ever played, totally made up for the fact that I was so pissed about all the bullshit.
Oh yeah and I sold over $100 worth of distro stuff, so I am fuckin stoked about that.
What a night of highs and lows, R.I.P James Bay Community Center. It sucks, but it's not the first time shit like this has happened to a venue. The last of the regular shows at Little Fernwood ended the exact same way. It's weak that people just don't learn.
Thanks to Brian for dealing with it, and for putting on so many sick (Not neccessarily S.I.C.K.) shows over that past couple years. And thanks to veryone who comes out and supports the scene. And thanks to anyone who tells me where those fuckers who smashed the windows live. - Sun, 10 Oct 2004 1:07pm

Wholy shit, we ended up getting their late and I only caught a bit of Born of Ashes, who I thought were really good (despite the lack of blast beats, which my friend so graciously pointed out when I commented that I thought they were good.) War by Other Means fucking ripped! Wholy shit! I can't wait to see them again. Fast hardcore with some weird shit going on there.

JBCC had a good run, assuming they don't let shows happen there anymore. Its too bad, though. Why can't people get drunk and break rich people's windows in (t)oak bay rather than the venue that they're seeing a show at. That would make too much sense, so there's no explaining why this happened other than some people just don't get it. Pure stupidity.

Let's not forget that people who throw shows are constantly fighting to keep venue options open with little help from community associations. Little Fernwood doesn't need a reason to not let shows happen there, other than pressure from all the young, urban professional hippies (yippies, if you will) and rich old people who are trying to gravitate to areas that actually have culture. Somehow they don't get that they're ruining that same culture they were drawn to by pressuring locals out of the area that they don't see as fitting into their vision of a 'community.'

I know I was refused renting the Little Fernwood venue after we threw a show, and nothing got broken and nobody called the cops. The Belfry Theatre didn't like the noise. Oh, here's a cute sidenote: The Belfry Theatre was given $40,000 by the city to install a sound-proof window along the road a number of years ago; I wonder where that money went, if they can't deal with noise from Little Fernwood punk shows?

Not to mention also being refused at the last second to using UVic as a venue (after it was approved by the student society and we had done a ton of promotion!), and they just flat out lied and said 'we don't allow shows here' but two weeks later Hot Hot Heat played. 50/50 came to the rescue that time and let us have the show there. Now there is a group of people with integrity.

Oh well, there are other venues in town still: pandora project, 50/50 collective, garry oak room, burnside elementary .. btw Brian, what was the deal you had with James Bay, I tried to get that venue to a throw a show and they wouldn't even talk to me about it, they said they only let you do shows. - Sun, 10 Oct 2004 2:08pm

canon.docre, the deal, I guess you can say, I had with the JBCC is that I live across the street, so I literally am part of the community. Plus I had a good record, and they were very paranoid and shaky about these shows to begin with, so they didn't want it getting any worse.
I don't care about pounding the crap out of those window-breakers, I have no time for such wasted emotions. I would like it however if they would pay for the repairs. Since that is extremely unlikely I will be holding a benefit show, probably Friday Nov.5, where TBA.

*PS - several items were left behind at the venue. Two duct-tape covered mic stands, an orange extension cord, a grey jacket, an address book, and a black knapsack. - Mon, 11 Oct 2004 4:34pm

Yeah those kids are trying to dig their own grave or something. When I went in to talk to the staff this morning they asked me if the graffiti outside the front door was done during the show too and of course I said no. So I guess these chumps came back at some point to write up some incoherent "punk lives" type stuff I couldn't really read.
Do these fools realize how small a town this is and how easy it would be to find them if we wanted to? - Tue, 12 Oct 2004 6:28pm

wow...i can't believe what happened, what a load of shit. Hmm..and the "punk lives" graffiti sounds awefully suspicious of a thread on this site from a while back...girls you say?...hmm coincidence? btw brian...let me know if i can help with the benefit show. - Tue, 12 Oct 2004 10:28pm

so just out of idle curiosity.... not cause i'm a violent motherfucker that likes hitting people...... who did the damage? Somebodies got to know, and hey nothing says justice like chewing on a doc marten. Not that I would ever advocate violence you understand, but there are other promoters out there that should probably make sure these chumps dont make it in the door. You mentioned video footage, I'm thinking plastering their faces all over the internet here might be nice.... - Wed, 13 Oct 2004 3:01pm

First of all thanks to everyone who showed up for the gig. It was a fucking awesome time playing there .

As for the assholes who like to fuck up a good thing like the James Bay Project, WHY?!?!? It's not like we have all that many venues for metal in Victoria as it is, don't fuck up a good thing! Through the last 9 or 10 years that we've been throwing gigs at the Tolmie house, we've had a few assholes over time, but jackoffs like that are not welcome.

Thanks again for the show, and hopefully there's more cuz I want to come back - Wed, 13 Oct 2004 4:29pm

Supposidly one of the girl's-drunk-friends was the same assfuxk that was drunk at the Ripchordz all ages show. There I procedded to drag him out of the gym so he wouldnt puke in the venue and from that he punched me in the head. I dont know how to word this right but, Its really rad that 99% of everyone in the Punk and Hardcore scenes of this town, care so much about this issue and now hate these people as much as they do. With this, chances are we will get money out of them for repairs one way or another and this will just be a lesson to all the dumb fuxks that even think about doing something like this in the future. - Wed, 13 Oct 2004 5:54pm

Yeah so anyways as I was saying before my post was deleted, the benefit show for the JBCC windows is tentatively planned for Saturday November 20, still waiting on word from a venue. Not the JBCC, obviously. - Fri, 15 Oct 2004 5:44pm
