Damage Inc. Lucky bar Oct 1 2004

I've had me head in a cave for the last ten or so years when it comes to Metallica. Sure i've seem them on TV the odd time and know the masses of mainstream listeners just love Enter the Sandman. My Metallica memories are the first two ALBUMS.... I remember on a cold and rainy day back in the early eighties, record shopping at Lyles, lookin at this new import metal album by a band called Metallica.... The album was Kill em All. The picture on the back was a group of really ugly big hair guys. We asked Mr. Lyle to place us a cut on the turntable and my fiends and i were blown out of our brains. I paid the man and returned home to remove Black Flags Damaged album from its near permenent place on my record player and spent the next few months sitting in awe as i listened to one of the most fuckin amazing metal albums to be placed onto this earth! The songs on this album and the following album were on my top ten list for some time. Metallica broke ground in the eighties just like Black Sabbath had done the decade previously. Metallica had the speed and the chugga chicka guitar riff that changed metal music forever. I have not bought any new Metallica since Master of Puppets, so like i said earlier me head was in a cave.
Friday night Oct 1st a band called Damaged Inc. I was inspired to see this band and spent the week previous singing in my head the tune Whiplash. My wife and i wandered downtown and entered the Lucky bar to see this Metallica cover band. These ladds looked like your average university type students... clean and well dressed...the kind you take home to meet mum. They took to the stage and wouldn't you know it they started the set with Enter the Sandman..... The crowd started to thicken as the band belted out this ever-popular hit. Damaged Inc did a good job of sounding like Metallica and i have to give them full cred for their talent. The crowd responded well and the pit, although small, had a few folks feeling some power and raising a fist in the air they continued to head bang and throw each other around. It looked like the crowd liked what they were hearing. I on the otherhand was waiting for the explosion that i used to get from the early Metallica songs. Then i realized this band was playing mostly new Metallica song. I'm sure they are great songs but i felt like they were just slow metal ballads. I recon this is what Metallica is all about these days. I kinda felt like i was at a highschool sock hop and as i observed the crowd, I even saw guys standing with thier arms around thier girlfriends gently swaying to the music. This is Metallica? Sorry, enter the sandman, i was just to tired to stay for the second set. I'm sure i missed my favorite songs by doing this but hey....i'm old and bedtime is 10:00. I figure i will just poke my head back in the cave when it comes to the new Metallica and let the masses of mainstream fans gently sway.

Good lead guitarist. Solid drummer. The rythym guitarist/vocals stopped at times and missed entire bars of songs. He missed some important "yeeaaahhs" that Hetfield made important pieces to these songs. The bass player missed a lot of notes throughout. I got there after it had started, but I am sure 'Anesthesia:Pulling Teeth' wasn't played. Metallica cover band must do 'Pulling Teeth' before kicking into 'Whiplash'...that is the law!
Overall, not bad. Would have liked to have seen them appear to look like Metallica of old. Mind you I was pretty gunned, so that didn't make a difference.
Thanks to Ben for being a great host to ol' Mr. Hell! Keep bringing in the good entertainment! Victoria appreciates it more than you can know! - Sun, 3 Oct 2004 6:41pm

Yo - to Rickylong! I saw Metallica play a show at Thunderbird Stadium (UBC) about two years ago and about 70% of the show was dedicated to their early thrash records! Unfortunately they spoiled things with a four song acoustic - near country style "interlude"...I forgave them though after they ripped through Creeping Death!

I've never seen Damage Inc., but after the reviews I've seen here, it doesn't sound like I'm going to bother either. I'm 25 and never had the chance to experience Metallica first hand in hte early 80's...it must have been awe inspiring! - Wed, 6 Oct 2004 2:52pm
