HOLY FUCK !!!! This show was insane ! At first things didn't look good , all the out of town bands missed the ferry . However the first Three bands still fucking rocked , even with their new line up change Tough As Nails is still amazing . At like quarter to 10 two huge vans pull up with three bands worth of people plus a few more and they set up in ten minutes ! All the bands used the same gear so there was no set upi between ,three back to back sets of non-stop music. The mosh was INSANE !! I wish all the hardcore shows here were like this . ALl I can say is I can't wait for any of these bands to come back . - Thu, 22 Jul 2004 11:55pm

I only really went in for 3 of the bands, all of whom were awesome. It was a shame that In Stride only got to play 2 or 3 songs & the show started about an hour late & all.
I donno, I guess I was hoping that since admission was $7 that we'd get to hear more music. Good on them for setting up in such a short time, though.
Aside from that (& the 10 or so mosquito bites I got) it was an excellent show, the bands were all great. Would've liked to hear more of In Stride. - Fri, 23 Jul 2004 2:37pm

awesome show, tough as nails played an awesome set considering they had two new members, and gerry's vocals sounded ridiculously good. too bad about the delay, but it was totally beyond anyone's control, with the exception of the fucking customs guys at the border. needless to say the three touring bands BLEW THE FRAGGIN ROOF OFF THAT PLACE, and in half an hour no less. being the biggest in stride fan in victoria, i really wish they had played "bombs away", but i guess nobody really wanted that bitchy woman to come back and complain, i know brian didn't. The step it up demo was literally the best dollar i ever spent, i pity the fool who missed out on that deal. - Fri, 23 Jul 2004 5:47pm

Yeah it was a MIRACLE (wink wink) that the show came together like it did. Despite ferry disasters, irate neighbours, me losing money, and the three touring bands only getting to play for ten minutes each, it actually happened! A big thanks to all the kids who love and support the scene and for helping to keep events like this going smoothly. And a HUGE thanks to Discord for letting the bands use their drums.
Now for the bad news...the Fairfield Community Place will be holding a meeting for all-ages promoters who book shows at the Garry Oak Room in an attempt to open a dialogue with the angry neighbours. Despite the level of noise outside the venue being less than highway traffic, the neighbours (all two of them) are up in arms. So keep an eye out for more info on this.
Oh and I think In Stride will be playing the August 2nd show with More to Pride and At Risk, this time hopefully for a full set. Unless of course a torch-bearing mob wielding pitchforks comes and lynches me first. - Fri, 23 Jul 2004 8:30pm

When are they holding the meeting?

How come you got noise complaints? did you keep all the windows and doors shut the whole evening? Every time i've had an open door or window i've gotten a noise complaint but ever since I've keept them all closed no problems have come forth.. its a LITTLE bit uncomfortable in the summer (being that it gets do damn hot) but its better then loosing the venue and having the neighbors complain (which they WILL do) - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 10:11am

Meeting will be soon, Melanie said. The problem was I didn't realize how noisy it would be with windows open so they were open at about 8, then a guy came in and complained, fairly reasonable fellow, so we closed the side windows. I didn't notice the back windows were open so about ten minutes later a woman came in and she was freaking out, screaming at me, swearing at people, threatening to call the police. It didn't help that she came in expecting a confrontation so all I could do was run to the back of the room and close the windows. For the next hour or so they just stood across the street fuming.
I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it was a weekday. - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 10:51am

I've been through this before as well. You know what the cops will tell them? "Too bad, it's before 11". - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 12:36pm

yeah thoes back windows can be tough because the blinds cover them. That one woman is a bit of a pain the guy's pretty resonable though. And yeah the fact that it was a weekday may have been an issue, i've done Sunday shows there before though so who knows?

The other thing you gotta do is make sure that the door to the main room and the door out front are both closed. It acts as a buffer and keeps noise from heading out accross the street out front. With all the windows closed and both of thoes doors closed people talking out front is more noisy...and then starting at about 9:30 or 10 you have to try and make sure people are not making too much noise out side or they'll complain about that too.

You would think that when people move in next to an activity center they would be under the realizeation that there will be activities happening there, some of which might be louder then yoga. Make sure I know when this meeting is, I think everyone just needs to know the ground rules that all thoes windows and doors have to be closed at all times. When I was at that Aids benifit show there they kept leaving the back door open and I kept having to run back and tell them to close it (and the windows too) If the center just stresses that I don't think they'll have any future problems.

They also just asked me to write a letter of support for them so they can get a government grant so I wanna ask them about this before I do that. - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 1:22pm

I put some TAN pics up here: http://www.veganica.com/category.php?id=206

Didn't get any good shots of the other bands, for fear of being squished. :)

Enjoy.
