Kris North User Info... | This show was fucking sweet. Full, full, quality sounds. Some of the fullest sounds I'd ever heard in my life. There were times when I could feel the music better than I could hear it. Sekoya: These guys played first and blew me away. They had a really good fusion of jazz, electronica, and deffinite trip hop/hip hop influences. I immediately told my friend they were very portishead but later changed my mind a little. These guys were tons of fun. The sax was amazing, played awesome solos. The trumpet played some really pretty stuff, though he didn't get to the point where I was blown away like I often was with the sax player. The vocalist was really hip, she had a hot voice and did some cool rap type stuff. She was experimental, using her voice as an instrument. And man could she dance. Unfortunately the dancing didnt pick up till Jagga Jazzist which is a bummer cause I think this band was better for dancing too. Jagga Jazzist: This band was PROFESSIONAL. They really amazed me. The crowd loved them. My friend said they looked like a bunch of vikings playing instruments. And each one played 4 or 5 if not more. It was a FULL FULL FULL FULL FULL sound. someone said too full and I'm not sure if I agree. Amazing use of dynamics. The starts and stops were wicked. The solos were awesome. The bass pumped so hard at one point I thought I would explode. Sometimes 3 guitars were going at once. It was really a spectactle man. I feel sorry for anyone who didnt see this show. Anyone turned off by the title jazz fest missed out too cause this show rocked hard. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 1:19am

Colin User Info... | I saw the show last night and it was pretty awsome, Sekoya definately had some nice solo's, but wow the drummer was intense for jaga jazzist!!! their were so many diffrent instruments coming together to make a flowing sound, it was really amazing. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 10:46am

[+} User Info... | such a shame that more people weren't out for the jazzfest kickoff. i was talking to amalia from sekoya and she seems like a really down to earth, high energy kind of gal. i got a CD and it really captures the live sound. sekoya just flowed with the music. not enough people dancing but i could tell everyone was just feeling it inside. almost vocalese styled horn-like vocals with eva cassidy bravado, the vocals were syrup-sweet. they had hard electro-grooves paired with acoustic drumming and great horns. great horns! jaga jazzists controlled feedback, noise loops, rhodes, xylophones... the whole piece(s) came together as the stars aligned for these european orchestral jazz pop fusion players. amazing swells and bursts of screaming electro beats combined with furious, furious drumming kept it so raw and edgy while the horns sweetened the stage. total dissonance and total harmony. maybe not for everyone... but i couldn't stop smiling. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 1:10pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | TO anyone in Vancouver GO SEE Jaga Jazzists with The Bad Plus. I saw a bit of The Bad Plus last night @ The Royal and they're drummer is so amazing, its unreal. Both of these bands together AND at the Commodoore would be a steller show. Jaga Jassists were awsome, definatly for fans of portishead, radiohead and anything else of that style! - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 4:10pm

The Professor User Info... | I missed Sekoya but Jaga Jazzist was amazing. They did a fantastic job of just building and building and building to the point where you'd think they couldn't rock any harder and then somehow push it even farther. They'd just build on the same grove for so long and then all of a sudden they'd change things up completely and pull the rug from under your feet. It's a shame there weren't more people at the show the absentees missed out. - Thu, 1 Jul 2004 6:17pm
