jay brown User Info... | o.k. Pariah kicked ass, they always do but man they are getting better every time I see them. The Cloak were great as well, definite potential there, I think in a year they will be a definite force to be reckoned with. Dont get me wrong theyre great now but they will be smoking with a bit more time. T.I.O.B. well hmm, the new drummer is great, so is the new bass player... um by far the sloppiest show I have ever seen them play. The singer was so hammered he broke two microphones, which I personally thought was pretty funny but since it means they probably didnt get paid I'm betting the rest of the band was a wee bit ticked off. But hey thats rock n roll, shit happens sometimes. I mean even sloppy for them is still better than most other bands can even play so hey what the fuck it was an entertaining show none the less. I did notice one thing though, they seem to have sped up a lot, even with the older stuff they played. Maybe it's just me but I think I liked it more a bit slower, which is weird cause I love the fast shit I just think for their sound it works better at a bit of a slower speed than it was at tonight. Ah whatever their still a great band. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 12:19am
mikeofthegoat User Info... | The new Drummer is matt from Goatsblood, he rules in ways most other drummers can't even concieve. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 5:34am
ML7Mike User Info... | Very good show, and yes, they were faster.. the new tunes sound pretty good, definate improvement on the drumming. But a surprisingly weak turnout. Pariah sounded really good but I went outside for most of The Cloak who probably should have been first on the bill as Pariah are alot tighter. Didnt much like the maggot TIOB emo fanboy who I caught spitting on Pariah ( he said it was out of respect?? ) but I hear Dave spat in his face afterwards so all is well :) ( dude's obviously never heard of hepatitis, and I think he is lucky he was spitting on such a passive bunch of dudes ) As for The Cloak, gonna check them at Lucky Bar tonight with better sound/stage and $10 pitchers eyaaah!! . - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 9:44am
mikesaturday User Info... | actually mike, i wouldnt say it was a suprisingly weak turnout, considering the promoters DIDNT PROMOTE. there wasn't even a poster in the window. It was totally dissapointing, and i'm planning on making sure 3" get a proper show next time they're in town. and hopefully i'll get them for 2 nights and put an all-ager on too. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 10:58am
Chris Logan User Info... | This is probably a good place to start a good old fashioned "Boy, bar owners/promoters are dumb and if I had a bar I'd do it this way..." thread. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 1:50pm
kurmudgeon User Info... | the band did get paid, but we did charge them 100 $ for the mic and 2 cords. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 1:57pm
BBJones User Info... | We (Pariah) had a great time! Big thanks to 3 Inches and The Cloak (and Enchanted Ferries for giving us the slot). Special thanks to all the Logan's staff and the sound guy. There were lots of compliments on the sound quality. See you suckers on July 17th! - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 2:03pm
mikesaturday User Info... | everyone get's so defensive on here. all i said was there were no posters for the show and i'm sure that had something to do with the turnout not being as good as it could have been. there's no denying this was a small turnout compared to the last few times 3" have played at logan's. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 2:16pm
Chris Logan User Info... | You're right about that. I was away for a couple weeks, and I guess I thought word of mouth would do it. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 5:21pm
Chris Logan User Info... | I actually did want people to start talking about what they would do if they owned a bar, though. There're usually some good ideas out there. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 5:28pm
Dd[]Sanger User Info... | Cheep drinks + Promotion + The right entertainment = Large turnout. *Cheap drinks and the right entertainment DON'T WORK without PROMOTION, word of mouth hardly works in Vancouver, letalone here...* Is there really anything else to be done that isin't just sparkles and glitter? Methinks not. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 6:00pm
Chris Logan User Info... | Problem is, if the drinks are cheap you need a LOT of people to show up. - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 6:04pm
Dd[]Sanger User Info... | Gotta have the combo man, if people know the drinks are cheap and theres live music they WILL show up, the only single hitch is they need to know about it to even debate attending. If you wanna experiment, book a show with a line up of solid bands at Logan's, lower the drinks to make it attractive and then do some real promotion and I bet you make a killing! *And by real promotion, I don't mean just handing out flyers, and the odd couple posters, that might as well be word of mouth, and cover charge does play a role, I have heard a few things about the 10 dollar cover for 3IOB, when you consider soundgarden has put on shows with SYL and meatlocker for 14 for example and compare it, it can look a little $ hungry*and yes I of course realize thats not the reality with this paticular show*, just my two cents, hell we charged 8 bux for Repulverizer, Pariah, Allfather AND Kataklysm!!! - Victorians ain't rich!* - Fri, 25 Jun 2004 7:54pm
Mutilashawn User Info... | don't nobody say nothing bad about the Cloak!! (In Living Colour reference/shoutout to the Cloak) - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 9:40am
Bubba French User Info... | I don't know how any one could think that Three Inchs of Blood were "better". This show lacked the wicked soulfulness that I so dearly associate with TIOB live. Not to mention that they sold out their fucking drummer who, if I'm not correct, started the band. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 2:33pm
mikesaturday User Info... | we TOTALLY don't need to go there. please. if you're not in the band you don't know what was going on. unless you're in a situation where your band is actually "making it big" you (nor i) have no (any) idea what you would do in the same situation. it's really easy right now to say that you'd stick with your bros forever, but when you're in the studio and you've already taken your record label advance and the label starts saying you have to do things, hell, sometimes you have to do things that you dont want to do. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 2:58pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | Hey Dd[]Sanger, TI0B charge more to play then Kataklysm as they have played here more and done well, the $10 ticket price is to be expected from that. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 4:17pm
Son of Mogh User Info... | I did and didn't miss Pariah, Cloak was rad, so was 3inches of Awesome. I was faced, good times. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 4:21pm
Dd[]Sanger User Info... | Well, apparently the turnout spoke for itself, and ya I know scott but point is 3iob was from Van. , Kataklysm was from Montreal and are internationally famous. It was me who decided on the 8 bux and we sold the bar out. Kataklysm drove 24hours straight from vegas after playing infront of 30,00 in Germany 2 days before to play here... You look at things like that and broke people bitch, personally I don't thing 10 is too much to ask but when you say compare it to the price of one of the Exhumed tickets for example, people certainly do bitch and I know of several who diddn't go just on that premise, thats all I was sayin' *PS. on 8 bux, Kataklysm left with I believe 760 was the number and there was still either 60 or 80 left for each of the other bands from the door, because 8 bux is definately a deal for Kataklysm!!! Plus the sound guy and door person got paid as well* Ya and just doing the math of how meny heads that was, I really don't know how we made such a killing, but we did! - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 4:30pm
Bryn User Info... | $10 doesn't seem unreasonable for a show like this. In general, I think shows in Victoria charge too little. It costs a fortune to be in a band, and I don't think any body playing on a local or probably even a national level gets back as much as they pay out. - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 7:00pm
meat User Info... | hey guy's lets stop talkin' shit about three inches. this was their first show together, and so what if some of the members were alittle drunk. they rule and they are going to be fuck'n killer once they get some more shows under their belt. as for matt the new drummer, if you've ever seen goatsblood you would know that he's an extremly talented drummer and a great addition to the band. all hail three inches of blood \m/ - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 7:31pm
Livevic Scott User Info... | Dd[]Sanger, I realize what your saying too however your show DID have a large amount of postering and advertizing and was in September which is widely known as a MUCH better time of year for shows. From talking to some other promoters and clubs ALOT of shows are doing more poorly then expected lately (last month or 2) so this show may not even be because of the cost or the promotion but simply because everything isn't doing as well lately. As for your point that Kataklysm is from farther away, where the band is from dosen't have a huge amount to do with the explanation about charging more or less, both bands had to cross the ferry to get here, and its not like Kataklysm came all the way out just for the one show both bands are from out of town and both should have that taken into condieration when they are paid. Don't get me wrong, I always like it when shows are cheaper but I'm guessing the reason this show cost more money then your Kataklysm show is that TIOB were not just going on a door deal and they were probably asking for a relitively decent sum of money since their last few shows had all sold out (or relititvely close to) where as Kataklysm's last show (previous to yours) didn't happen because they didn't show up and the one before that had about 80 people at Little Fernwood. My guess is the next time Kataklysm come to town, knowing they sold 150 tickets or whatever they will ask for at least $1000 guarentee plus the extras and the ticket price will again be at least $10 because thats the way agents and bands work. I'm gonna agree with Bryn here that shows in Victoria are on a whole very cheap and most of the bands that play here the ticket price is usually a few bux cheaper then the show in vancouver where the band is playing in a bigger room, so they're paying more to come to a smaller town and play a smaller room which is charging less money? According to that logic NO ONE will ever want to come to our little island. If you guys wanna see bigger names your gonna have to get used to paying a bit more to see the shows. I really don't mean to sound like a downer or anything so don't take offence to any of this please, Also this post has little off topic from the origional post and for that I appologize =) *Cheers* - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 9:06pm
Akylore User Info... | Hmm...yeah, seeing Jamie go nutbar with the mic was rather amusing...what a piece of work he is *laughs* The show was rad though, to be honest with you, word of mouth seems to be a big role for Vic turnouts...Vic's just weird that way for shows, I duuno... I mean shit, I doubt the Cannibal Corpse tickets are even sold out, and everybody knows about that!!!! I find some people just flat out lazy sometimes, some of them would rather smoke weed and watch bad movies than actually go out to a fuckin' show... Pariah fucking slayed...and just to go off topic some more, I hear they're playing a wicked all-ages show at 755 Pandora St. on July 3rd, it'll be worthy... - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 10:05pm
Broccoli User Info... | SHAMELESS plug Adrian, SHAMELESS.... haha, should be a good show though: I'm stoked to hear Desensitized with there new singer. unfortunately I had to miss this show due to bits of me getting cut out.... so Cam was drunk and smashin shit eh? - Sat, 26 Jun 2004 11:33pm
Akylore User Info... | No dude, it was Jamie!!! The fuckin' guy was chippin' the paint off the upper ceiling by swinging the mic around by the cord...hilarious shit... Glad to hear you're going to the Pariah show on the 3rd, I'll probably be there... - Sun, 27 Jun 2004 12:44am
Dd[]Sanger User Info... | Scott, youre not entirely right there, there was a little postering done about 2 weeks prior by allfather and myself, and Kataklysm wasn't just going to be here, they had to drive 24 hours straight to play as the day were playing van wasnt until an approx. week later, they were going to be here the day before that but rushed outta vegas because I did a little asskissing. But ya I'm not here to argue, I was just stating my opinions, fact is, cheap beer, lowered cover charges coupled with adequate promotion do sell shows. Thats all I was saying, I don't know how that translated into insulting 3iob. The part you said about all bands not from here being just outta towners, I do not agree with however, Montreal is a motherfuck of alot further than Van. Van is a simple ferry ride away, how meny bands from here go to play there outta their own pockets and dont make a dime in van? Now ask yourself the same about Montreal... Bands from that far away are certainly a treat! You don't have to explain the marketing "things" to me, as I said I understand, I was merely pointing out that had it been cheaper several people I know would have attended. This doesn't include myself, hell I coulda been in for free, I only diddn't go personally because I had no ride home. I think musicans are far too underpaid, hell I'm one! I was just talking marketing man...*marketing leading to turnout and nothing more to be exact* - Sun, 27 Jun 2004 1:38am
ML7Mike User Info... | I was under the impression that some of the guys in TIOB were coming from Chicago? not just Vancouver.. Go to Edmonton, local unsigned band shows are $10. - Sun, 27 Jun 2004 10:13am
Livevic Scott User Info... | Heh alright yeah obvously if you can have cheep beer and lower ticket prices its more likely your going to have more people in the room, I suppose I was just saying sometimes you can't have it all. I don't totally agree with all the poitns your making on why this show was over priced vs others but I think we both have the same final view point and yeah I agree with you that if you can give people more reasons to be at the show more people will be there (cheaper drinks, more bands, better bands, cheaper ticket etc) - Sun, 27 Jun 2004 11:41am
Colin Sick User Info... | $10 IS NOTHING TO SEE A SHOW. PEOPLE EXPECT TO GET PAID $10 AN HOUR AT THEIR JOBS SO WHY CANT THEY PAY THAT TO SEE A SHOW! I KNOW HOW MUCH IT COSTS TO BE IN A BAND. I BET I WOULD BE OWNING A NICE HOUSE RIGTH NOW IF I WASNT IN A BAND ! - Sun, 27 Jun 2004 12:27pm
Dd[]Sanger User Info... | Colin, we know, we allready agreed on that point, I personally shell out hundreds a month on band expenses! Last line I put was "Marketing leading to turnout and nothing more" I have allready said I diddn't think 10 was too much to ask, but pointed out that SEVERAL people I know DID have that opinion. It would be great if musicians got paid what they were worth, but that isin't the reality, people ask an opinion, I give it. Nowhere did anyone say 10 is a fucking rip off joke or anything like that, it's just that the majority of people just see "ok, so how much is this gonna cost me?? and I gotta buy beer at 6 bux a glass too?? I'm broke and this is the last of my dough is it worth my while money wise to attend? damn should I just go to a party instead and save my money for the XXXXXXXX show coming up in a week?" - Sun, 27 Jun 2004 3:09pm
Broccoli User Info... | you BETTER be there, your playing. - Sun, 27 Jun 2004 10:55pm
DOOMHAMMER User Info... | Start charging 20 bucks a show, do it for a couple months, and then when it goes to 10 bucks everyone will thank you. - Mon, 28 Jun 2004 12:05am
KK Downingsyndrome User Info... | I hate playing shows that charge any more than 6 bone and like paying it even less. I generally avoid 10 bone shows and try to keep prices down at shows I'm involved with (or at least sneak as many people as I can in). Then again, I'm morally opposed to money in general (yes, I have morals. Well, amoral. HA!) - Tue, 29 Jun 2004 1:51pm
