Just Like to know what all y'all that attended thought of the show... posterup! - Fri, 28 May 2004 5:41pm

Hey, I would just like to thank all the bands for playing. The show turned out great. Once the over head was deducted we made about 900 bucks for YAL(youthagainstlandmines.org) which means that they only have about 600 left to clear a full field.
Heres my show review....
Better Than Jesus: never heard these guys before, but was definetly impressed (the dualing vocals were awesome..)

Combat Wombat: This is my brothers band, so I'm slightly biased, but for only practicing about 6 times, these guys were great; "bursting their way onto the ska seen like dynamos"..I heard one drunk person say...

The Madd Hatters: These guys know how to put on a show.

Jacobs Fall: I have been meaning to see these guys for a while. Their drummer is intense, and their guitarist had about a million pedals. They had a fairly radio friendly sound but all in all I enjoyed their show.

Maurice: blew my mind. Probably the most professional show I've seen by a local band yet. If you ever get a chance to see these guys, take it.

Thanks again to all who came out and supported the cause, especially to the bands who donated their time and efforts. - Sat, 29 May 2004 1:47am

This show turned out really well. A lot of money was raised for YAL. I'd like to thank Mark B. for putting on this show and doing an exceptional job. The bands did really well. The bands really got the crowd moving, big crowd too for the most of it. My band, Jacob's Fall, had a blast playing and everything went over smoothly. Thanks again to all the bands, did a great job, to everyone who came and supported the cause, and to all who helped put it on. - Sat, 29 May 2004 5:15am

Yea. Had alot of fun. Specially when the hoochies came and soloed with us that was good times. The other bands were all impressive. BTJ has really improved. Maurice is fucking awesome. And for a first timer Combat Wombat deffinitely impressed me. Jacobs Fall are a good band as well.

Thanks for letting us play.

Thanks to everyone who came out to see the show. It was so wicked to see the crowd truly gettin into the music. Cudos to everyone who let us use their equipment, haha. I was so happy to see some moshes break out too. It was good to get to know a couple of new people too. Hope to see you guys come out for our next show, whenever that may be. Keep it real.

That was an awesome show. Good turnout, and the crowd really got into it for the most part. I do agree with what Ruby said about the kids finding the field more amusing than the actual show, though. Anyways,

I missed BTJ's set unfortunately, as I didn't decide to come until the last minute, although I'd like to see them if they play again soon.

Combat Wombat were pretty good, especially tight for a new band, although I couldn't really get into them most of the crowd did.

The Madd Hatters were awesome, better than the last time I saw them at Oak Bay, I think a lot of people were there to see them and they really got the crowd moving. Great stage presence and they have their own unique sound (even when doing covers) & it was cool when the Hoochy Girls joined them. Definitely a friendly bunch of guys, even the fellow who I thought was trash talking the crowd at the last show (which I was wrong about) came up and shook my hand and asked if I was having a good time. Way to prove my first impression wrong! :)

Jacob's Fall were very tight and had a polished sound. Reminded me of Disturbed a bit. Their last song was really pretty, I liked the cool cymbal action that they had going on. The drummer had a sweet set and looked like he was having a lot of fun, I'd like to see more drum solos in their songs. They seem to have improved a lot from the last time I saw them (at Burnside a few months ago.) It's a shame that almost everyone was out on the field for this set, but good to see at least one of the Twiceborn guys there moshing it up despite all the shit that's been said on here.

Finally was Maurice. Probably one of the best bands I've seen here. It's cool that they can pull off a laid back show and then turn around and play a high energy show and get the kids moving (okay, a few months later.) It did seem like something was missing (lead guitarist) but they were still awesome, loved their Beatle's cover and despite missing their lead guitar they had an intense, professional indie rock meets emo sound. I think I like them more in the laid back atmosphere (Second Story, maybe) but I'd love to see them play more shows like this, too.

All in all this was one of the better shows I've seen at the Gary Oak Room, well worth the $6. And yes, to the girl who asked me if I saw the bear moshing, I did & you aren't crazy, haha. - Sat, 29 May 2004 11:36am

hey this is the bass dude from combat wombat

I gotta say, there couldnt have been a better concert for us to debut at, I missed the sets before us due to a jazz thingy, but Im sure they made our set look that much worse. but the mad hatters kicked some seriouse donkey ass, we should get some more concerts organized with u guys, and

jacobs fall was sweet too, not really my style of music, but u got me into it anyways,

and maurice, by god, be famouse already, y r u taking your sweet time, eh? u were awsome, whats the name of that east-indian influenced song? it sounded so much like janes addiction, and its bloody hard to emulate a sound like that

any ways, sweet show overall

i like it sometimes, and sometimes i don't. depends on my mood i suppose. cause you guys have the same sound (guitars, bass, drums) as tool (or close to,imo) . and sometimes the vocals can get a little high up on the scale if you know what i mean. - Fri, 4 Jun 2004 12:41pm
