Looking back, I can't believe I was indecisive about going to this show. It was amazing, and most people seemed to be having a wonderful time, myself included.

Josh Doherty was an impressive opener. Armed only with a red electric guitar, he managed to hold the audience's attention for the entirety of his set. He gets bonus points for trying to achieve spot-on tuning (unfortunately, this seems to be increasingly rare these days... maybe people are just getting sloppy with tuning - I know I am!). The French song also added a bit of an interesting twist to the set.

Having not seen Ghosts for a year and a half, I didn't really know what to expect. Needless to say, I was not disappointed because their sound has only improved from what I remembered. The synthy-post-punk-rock (I'm terrible with terms like that... forgive me!) was engaging and unique. I particularly liked the guitar with its clean distortion. This is a group that's very polished and together, and in many ways their set was near flawless.

While Shapes and Sizes weren't quite as tight as Ghosts, their music was still very enjoyable. They give the impression of being a bit of a green band, but that's not a bad thing and quite often the only factor that can overcome that sort of vibe is time. The male and female vocals worked well together, and the three-part harmonies were especially nice. The ukelele was also a creative touch, but it got drowned out a bit by the other instruments. Oh, and for the record, I think "Computer in Love" would suit the band quite well!

Immaculate Machine was, in a word, stellar. They were energetic and looked like they were having a lot of fun onstage, and the audience picked up on their enthusiasm and everyone was happy. It was obvious that most of the audience had come out to see IM, and by the time they took the stage I believe the place was sold out - definitely good to see! It's been a long time since I've seen a band that is genuinely that fun to watch, and needless to say it was a real treat. Keep up the good work, and best of luck on your tour!

Bottom line - this was one of the best shows I've been to in a very long time. Pity the poor folk who missed it. - Sun, 2 May 2004 5:41pm

Alas it was sold out. No show, shirt or CD for me!

But I'm glad to hear it was a success. Good luck on the tour!

That was an excellent show. Second Story is a cool little venue, not the normal all ager crowd. & I hadn't seen any of these bands before, either. Had to bribe my sister into coming with paying for her ticket & buying her a drink, and she ended up falling asleep for most of the show, hehe.

Anyways, my review:

Josh Doherty - was cool. Charming, great voice, & lovely lyrics. He seemed really laid back and was having a lot of fun up there. His songs had catchy licks & he interacted with the audience well.

Ghosts - weren't too exciting, but were still very tight and sounded great nonetheless. Nothing really stood out to me, but I'd go see them again. & as already said, the guitar distortion was awesome. Funky bass, too.

Shapes and Sizes - a new band. Very creative instrumentality, I loved the vocals (female + male & the harmonies!) & extra points for having a ukulele! :) I'd love to see this band play again.

Immaculate Machine - Wow. Very polished sound, awesome stage presence, amazing vocals, I loved their cover of The Message. Their new songs are great, and they got the crowd moving. Very danceable, a lot of fun. The drumming was creative and tight & the bass on the keyboard was cool. Too bad they'll be away for 6 months, but hopefully they'll get their music out to the rest of the country! Recordings hardly do this band any justice, one of the better live performances I've seen in town & I can't wait to see them again.

Great show, worth the $8, & I'll be going to more shows at Second Story I think. Glad to see that it sold out :) - Mon, 3 May 2004 12:13pm

I'm surprized they have gigs up there, I always thought it was a used bookstore only (I've bought a few books from the place in the past). - Mon, 3 May 2004 3:11pm

It is primarily a used bookstore, but they do have shows there every now and again. I found it to be a great little venue, it's small enough to make the show feel intimate and has enough character to create a good atmosphere. - Tue, 4 May 2004 3:31am

Until some moron decides to steal a book or two. Perhaps they should build plexiglass in front of the book shelves just to be on the safe side. Yeah, I always think of the extreme. - Tue, 4 May 2004 11:24am

Both gigs rocked! Though I had more fun at the Ghosts of Science gig, must of been the ale. :) - Sun, 9 May 2004 6:51pm
