All I can say is WOW!
on second thought I'll add more...

Leeroy was good as an opener for the gig. Naysayers be damned, the boys got talent.

As for the Pixies, it was somewhat of a dream I never thought I'd live. The sond was quite good for the Curling Rink(you never quite lose the echo). The band was tight(a few flubs while goofing off though!) and the setlist never went past the first EP and two LPs(with the exceptions of a couple of singles in the encore). I might have been nice to hear a few from the later records, but the best stuff was all there.
A side note: The merch was reasonably priced. This is something that more big rock acts so note. Now they just need to sell XXXL shirts for us fat bastards.

The CD sounds great too. No echo. - Wed, 21 Apr 2004 9:33pm

Totally agree. Was a wicked show. Definately didnt want to miss it. I thought Leeroy did a good job. It wouldnt be fair to make a comparison to the Pixies, as some people tried to. As usual the scalpers were out and about. But lots of people told em to Ef off. Crowd got into it near the front. They did look like they were enjoying it. Kim seemed in a fairly good mood, as was the rest of the band. Definately no complaints. How often does a band with the reputation, skill, great albums and sheer kick ass music come to victoria ? There were people of all ages up into their 30's or older, even some young teens as well. Im sure many of the people were just discovering the Pixies. I'd give the show a solid 9 out of 10. Hope to get the chance to see them again someday ! - Wed, 21 Apr 2004 11:01pm

My second real concert and I was one of the few lucky people to be right up at the gate with the band just mere feet away. I don't think I could have asked for anything better. It was an amazing show. They played all the right songs and the crowd just went wild. The security guys were one of the nicests that I've come across as of yet. The only thing that was bad about the show was the fuckin' crowd surfers! My friend ended up getting a hole through her lip becuase of one stupid crowd surfer. Just pisses me off when someone decides to "surf" over my head. - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 9:49am

I can't believe we were actually able to see the fucking Pixies...This show was such a trip, absolutely amazing!!! I was impressed by the sound and the crowd was great, everyone seemed so happy and I think most of the tickets went to the true fans. They played an amazing set (I would have liked to hear Winterlong and Dig For Fire, but alas...) and Leeroy did a fantastic job of opening for them. Those guys have talent, they just need to find their sound. I was proud of em though, local boys keeping their cool opening for a band like that. Great show!! =) - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 10:07am

They played Hey, therefore I'm happy....

That was a rad show.... I'm listening to the live CD right now.... It's a really clean recording, but it would be nice to get more crowd on it...... *shrug*

Mi*Coll, I got kickied int he head, too.... Crowd surfing is on thing, but if you flail your legs around while crowd surfing, you deserve elbows...... - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 11:41am

Yeah That beer line-up was insane. Myself and a few others figured it would be quicker to just run a block and a half away and get cheaper beer faster at Logan's.

I'm going to post a review on brandxmedia.ca, but due to the no camera rule I caouldn't take any pics - I noticed a few got through, so does anybody have photos? - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 2:43pm

In all the years that I have listened to the Pixies, the thought of them ever reuniting never crossed my mind. That is what made this the most special concert I have ever been to. Kim was beautiful, she had this playful smirk on her face. Dave and Joey were amazing. Most of all, seeing Frank Black scream gave me chills, absolutely amazing. I was practically front and centre, I have the bruises to proove it. Also, crowd surfers be more careful. Dont flail your arms and legs around, one of you kicked me in the head and smacked my face into the barricade. There was a plus side to getting my lip split open. The security guard felt sorry for me and gave me the set list...They abbreviated the names of their songs:
cactus, bone, river, crackity, something, tame, hey, gigantic, grieves, la la, where, vamos, nimrod, man, gouge, broken, isla, wave, monkey, caribou. Encore: heaven, wave, white - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 3:22pm

What a terrific show. Judging from the other reviews on here, I'm guessing everybody had a pretty awesome time, which is good to hear. Leeroy was thoroughly enjoyable, I'd heard good things about his live show in the past but this was my first time seeing him play, and I was most pleased. Definitely worthy of opening for a band like the PIxies. Way to go Leeroy, hope to see you at another show soon.

And well, the Pixies, they were just awesome. It was a surreal experience getting to see such an influential and respected band, especially in a city as small as Victoria. (I mean really, did any of us honestly expect them to play here in the first place?). Opening with Debaser really got the crowd going, and to say the audience was energentic would be a bit of an understatement. It was great to hear favourites such as Caribou and Wave of Mutilation, but I agree that Winterlong would have been really fantastic as well. Sound quality was better than I had expected, and although there was very little stage banter the band proved they are still masters at their craft.

I'll have to agree about merch, the prices weren't outrageous and there was some pretty decent selection. It's nice to have the cds as well, it makes for a great souvenier from the show.

All in all, I found it to be a most impressive show. Well worth the $35 for the ticket, and definitely something to go down in Victoria's musical history book. - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 3:24pm

Aye, the show was grande..was right at the gate, in front of FB. Very nice.

I wrote my review here, lots of other folks as well, including the setlist:

http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7186

And i snapped a bunch of pics before security took my camera away:

(If you took some pics, please do upload them!)

I'd agree the security was very decent - these guys didn't let it get to their heads, very impressive. They watched me take a bunch of pics, then took my camera away..i couldn't have taken many more good shots, considering how rowdy it was and got...so all was good in that respect.

hehe..i saw the Pixies. =) - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 4:38pm

Wow, that show rocked. I say boo to all the naysayers, who cares if the show didn't live up to your hype, those are the pixies, they re-united, and they played VICTORIA!!!!! just be happy! anyway i enjoyed myself, soudn quality was not great, but i have experienced the CC before, and the bodies absorbed a lot of sound. I think leeroy did a quite nice opening set, good songs and not more than half hour (?) Crowd surfers were a little on the crazy side, did they get kicked out after security grabbed them?> I was about three rows from the front, couldnt really see kim but great view of frank and joey.. I saw dave noisy too! - Thu, 22 Apr 2004 8:27pm

Ok, here's my drunk report (minus that C word :)

I felt bad for Leeroy, it seemed like nobody was taking that set in, even though I really respected what he was doing, well ya know...

As i got inside the CC security padded me down. I couldn't figure it out, I said don't worry and the security guy mentioned he worries when people say that. Talk about rude!!!

I was lucky enough to get a ticket outside the CC. Hey call it fluke, but I got my ticket at face value. I hit the Curling Club, and couldn't figure out where the beer gardens were. The lineup was killer to get there, so I waited. It's funny, I made a prediction that as soon as The Pixies hit the stage the lineups would filter out, and they did. I got decent seats upstairs. Sorry if I ran into anyone I didn't recognize, with the amount of people at the gig, got rather overwhelming, and with the amount of beer I drank, I was fubar'd! I was more focused on how the band played (only reason to show up, really) Yeah, I still treasure what I saw, it was amazing, I can't stop listening to the CD copy. The crowd was UBER cool! Nice to see Pixie fans helping out the down and outs, I got like 3 free beers that night, from really nice people!

Best song they played, Where is My Mind, I heard that and I got all goosebumply! It showed respect, I was STOKED!!! - Sun, 25 Apr 2004 12:16am

It was a good show, though the band sort of seemed indifferent to their audience, Frank Black has been that way every time I've seen him play. I think the audience, especially the hysterical fans made it that much more interesting. Its definitely a show that wont be forgotten. - Sun, 25 Apr 2004 6:33pm

i got into leeroys show.
i thought he was a great opener. great harmonies, pedal steel, ripping good energy, dan pulling off all his guitar strings!

the pixies were awesome, surreal.. but you could just tell that the fire had gone out. but it was the next best thing to seeing them in their prime. - Sun, 25 Apr 2004 6:56pm
