k8 User Info... | Kelly opened up with a four or five song set. She said that she had only planned 3 songs, so her last 2 she wasn't prepared for apparently, although she seemed to do a whole lot better with her last couple songs than her first ones. Her guitar playing has a lot of room for improvement but her singing was excellent. Second was One Track Mind (aka The Hip Replacements.) They had great stage presence and a fairly tight sound & some pretty funny lyrics. I think it went overboard when the vocalist removed his pants, but their set was good nonetheless. The Madd Hatters were next. It seemed that most people came to see them, as most of the audience was on the floor for their set. They were awesome, especially considering how new they are. Very tight sound, excellent bass/horns/keys, good vocals & percussion. Their stage presence was pretty much unmatched for the rest of the night, & they even got some moshing going. I did hear one of the members trash talking the audience at one point, which was pretty lame, but aside from that they played a very good set. The Lady Esther was on next. By then people had started to leave, but they still had a pretty good crowd up front. It was fucking funny when people were trying to skank to the first song (& did skank to a couple of their other songs.) Personally, I came to see this band, as I had seen them at the Punk Fest last year and they hadn't played an all ages show in Vic since. Their new stuff is a lot more on the heavy side than their old nu-metalish stuff, & overall it was very impressive. They didn't play my two favourites of theirs, but I can forgive them for that ;) Lastly were the Armchair Cynics. This was the third time I saw them, and I think this was the best set I've seen them play. By the time they got on stage most of the crowd had left. Their groupies were really annoying, too. But their new songs (& rewritten old songs) made up for it. Surprise Ending is a lot better & so is Lost Control. The new EP is gonna kick ass. All in all this was a good show. The crowd was decent considering it was a school show, the MC's were complete idiots, & the music was superb. I'd definitely go see most of these bands again, & it was worth the $5. - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 11:38am
ben User Info... | yeah, funny cause i thought we (madd hatters) sounded like shit as we hadn't practiced since our last show. but it looked like everyone was having a good time. by the way who was trashing the crowd, thats really not like anyone in the band... - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 3:19pm
Madd Hatters User Info... | To the fucker who put the kettle in the microwave last night. Thanks for ruining both. The money that was raised for the charity now has to go towards buying a new kettle and microwave. Thanks alot. - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 3:40pm
colin User Info... | what an asshole, why would they fucking do that - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 5:09pm
Kris User Info... | Its possibly your talking about me. i said come on you mother fuckers to get the audience dancing but thats not trash talk...thats pump up talk. Also i'm appalled by the microwave incident. thats just fucking stupid and really sad. - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 6:35pm
matty User Info... | what?! there is no money for the charity, thats fuckin low whoever did that... anyways we can make some more money either for the charity or to buy some new stuff? - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 7:23pm
k8 User Info... | No, Kris, I wasn't talking about you. I went to school with you ages ago at the Montessori, haha. I know you're a good guy. I was talking about someone else but Ben emailed me and cleared things up, so I retract that sentence about someone talking trash about the audience - Sun, 4 Apr 2004 7:55pm

x Buddy x User Info... | Kelly was pretty cool , she has a good voice and she was cute , one track mind was fun but i didn't really care for a lot of their lyrics but their singer is nuts and that was awsome. Mad Hatters were definately the best band of the night , however i do agree that they played better that the last show , I have wanted to hear a ska cover of obla de obal da for a long time. The Lady ester , ummm i don't really know what to say about this band ... they were different i'll give them that , not my thing though . I didn't bother staying for armchair cynics i have seen that band entirely too many times already and frankly once was too much . - Mon, 5 Apr 2004 9:11pm

nicole User Info... | These are my thoughts on the show.........it was funny how no one followed the "no drugs/no booze" rules.....everybody was pissed.....I'm pretty sure even some of the bands and the MC's of the show were drunk. But despite that the show was good. Kelly opened it up and she sucked my question is if she'd ever played the guitar before.......I liked the MC's singing to her that was funny.......next came the one track mind or whatever they are called....they were good if you didn't come for the music....they had good stage precense and 1good song (skank the plank).......anyways next were the Madd Hatters...who were awesome......especially Matt one of the guitar players.......when they auctioned him off I was screaming extra loud......anyways they were good and I'd recommend them to anyone.......I love just traditional Victoria ska........anyways next was the Lady Ester..they were good but they had the wrong crowd for their music........then came the armchair cynics........they were the "headliner" of the show.......but they were bad........if not for the Hatters the show would have been pretty bad. Overall Oak Bay put on a good show......the bands were good.....the MC's were funny.....except when they didn't give out that last t-shirt......I wanted it......I hope they do it again so i can run up on stage and steal it back...........but hwat the hell. Overall it was good. - Fri, 9 Apr 2004 7:10pm
Borat User Info... | What's new.. Ska lovers can't get into the rock and vice-versa. Who the hell books ska and rocks bands together anyway? Neither can stand to be in the room when the other is playing. - Fri, 9 Apr 2004 9:41pm

"shenana woah, i live in the suburbs"? i don't know what you're talking about. - Sat, 10 Apr 2004 9:33am

Answer me this: What are you referring to when you say "rock" maybe then I can get a handle on whatever the fuck you are trying to say - Sat, 17 Apr 2004 9:31am
hoochy andy User Info... | Yeah Madd Hatters definitely rock the house. It's good to see new kids taking up the ska. Now that you're getting into it, I suggest listening to some old Jamaican stuff like desmond dekker, the skatalites, toots and the maytals, ken boothe, etc. to get an idea of the history of the music (sorry for the condescension if you already know these artists). Also, you guys should play another show with the Hoochies, the last one was wicked! - Sun, 18 Apr 2004 9:55pm
