This concert was intense. Best $12 I ever spent.
First off with Mendelssohn's String Quartet, Opus 44, No.2. This piece was very Wagner-esque in feel; a definite epic, prancing, triumphant structure was prevelant throught the movements, especially the 2nd, that was probably the most precise, technical one.
Next came Bartok's String Quartet No.2, Opus 17. This music is what should be played in zombie flicks, period. So fucking dark....and technical. There were so many dissonant eerie melodies and atmospheres created, I don't think I smiled that sadistically since I dropped acid in '96.
Last was Schumann's Piano Quintet, opus 44. It was fairly 'romantic' I suppose, but fortunately it wasn't dainty either, I just found it rather warm and relaxing to listen to. Still pretty technical though. It actually reminded me of the 'Royal Library' sequence of the 'Castlevania-Symphony of the Night' video game for PS1. Very rich and eloquent.
Apparently the Vogler string quartet has been playing since 1985, they defnintely haven't lost their touch.
