Annual Low Dough Metal Show, Feb. 28th, 2004 @ The Waldorf.
with: Omega Crom, Tendonitis, Meatlocker 7 and The Joint Chiefs.
First of all, the Waldorf seemed like a strange and fragile place for a metal show. I'm surprised yet also proud of the fact that nothing got smashed or anything. It was an early start for a show, Joint Chiefs came on a little after 9pm, and the crowd as usual was a little late.
J.C.'s had an excellent, tight set and every time I see them they sound more proficient and flashier. J.C.'s also make the most of the stage and the venue since they play wireless. Wicked set. If you haven't checked J.C.'s before, they're a lot like old Bay Area thrash from the way back.
Meatlocker 7 from Victoria came on next. I hadn't seen them in a few years. I'd seen them twice before at the good ole' Columbia: the first time thinking they were alright Cannibal Corpsish type death metal, the second time thinking they were a little too new metal. This time, they were way better than the last time I saw them. And, yes their drummer was truly amazing. But overall, I found ML7 a little boring, just too many riffs involving the E and F chords. Otherwise they were tight and except for problems with the vocal mic they played flawlessly. Something about their sound made me think of Albertan Death Metal ala Red Tide/Dead Jesus.
Tendonitis ripped it up-tuxs and all. Vancouver's (and probably anywhere else for that matter) only instrumental grind band. Sound for Tendonitis and Omega Crom who followed was excellent, engineered by "Who Else" (He likes to say "Who Else Is God !" Brian Else. Wicked tight set with amazing riffs that almost become vocal like melodies in themselves. Sort of reminds me of Deeds of Flesh but way more intense. By this time the venue was packed. Also, there are annoying pillar things that make it hard to watch the band.
Omega Crom ripped it up as always-super tight technical power metal/thrash. Kick ass vocals, drums, guitars and bass all around. If you haven't gotten a chance to see this band yet, do so by all means. They even do a wicked cover of Judas Priest's "Painkiller". This particular evening one of the guitars suffered a technical difficulty during the solo and they had to go back to the solo part to do it right. Awesome. Omega Crom even did separate guitar and drum solos, which is cool but a little much considering all the kick ass guitar and drum (and everything else) stuff within the songs themselves.
Overall a kick ass show-but I thought someone did a low dough metal show last year, so isn't this the 2nd annual low dough metal show? Oh well-still it was awesome.

greattimes at this show good turnout. Found the Joint Chiefs to be a little generic but entertaining. The place started to fill up as Meatlocker 7 took the stage. I hadnt seen these guys since SYL at Dicks onDicks so was really looking forward to them. They have a new drummer and my god did he ever kick ass! The band has really tighntened thier sound up, and considering how extremely wellthe SYL crowd received them 2 years earlier, it is a good indiciation of a band on the rise. Their new material was really good and if its a sign of whats to come, sign me on! Tendonitis were also very cool, and technical but after about 5 songs it all started to blur into one longwinded set. Grind core without vocals to hide the inasnity and ovrall a talented group. Finally the main event Omea Crom took the stage. Having heard nothing but good things I was aticipating more. But thats not to say they werent good. Their talent level is very high at least vocally and riff wise. The long haired guitarist sure belted out a mean solo. The vocals are classic metal style ala Halford, King Diamond, Dickinson but with lots of evil death and black metal growls thrown in for good measure. Another Vancouver band onthe rise, altho they were so loud that the more piercing screams started toreally hurt my ears so I went out for a smoke and before I was dont the show was over.

Anyways, nice to see a new venue pop up in amuch better area than the normal metal venues ( hey my car was not broken into so..) hope the waldorf does more! - Mon, 1 Mar 2004 3:17pm

Cool, looks like OC did a great job with this.
LMV had 2 flyer images rotating for this show and 4 single word (red on black L.. D.. M.. S..) posters alternating, along with 3 of the 4 bands featured. It was a fun experiment for a show/scene well worth supporting.

Nice to see so many people from both cities discussing the merits of the bands/show this time - (see the "ML7.Drummer.." thread for more reviews too). Saves me writing in [under a different name] trying to prompt shit all the time.

Wicked job everyone!

In fact we use F chords rarely. The Eb's are mostly to keep continuity in between the other notes we are playing or for certain bulk sections in the song Vague Impression. Regardless, to each their own and thank you for your input. And thank you to everyone who came out to support all the bands.
The sound was horrendous on stage and I am thinking it was similar out front. Regardless, we got through it mostly unscathed thanks to DMD (the drummer from HELL!!!).
Looking forward to seeing Myopia one day, Stefan! - Mon, 1 Mar 2004 4:42pm

I didn't think much of the sound anywhere in there (no fault to brian i'm absolutely sure though). I'm rabid about Tendo and couldn't really hear what I needed that night. It seemed to work out ok for the JC's and OC for whatever reasons. You guys played well but need to come back so we can hear you right. i'm just happy about the cd comp for the show.
Nasty and Stef keep saying Myopia's done, but yeah, the cd's got some cool stuff on it. - Mon, 1 Mar 2004 5:42pm

I found that standing to the left of the stage ( sorta behind Duncan ) was perfect for hearing Tendonitis. Out front it was almost painful, but from the side I could hear it all pefectly. Same as Omega Crom. They made my ears hurt so I jammed my earplugs in deep and they sounded alot more clear. - Mon, 1 Mar 2004 6:45pm

Yup. Pretty fucking good show in my opinion. All the bands were entertaining and from where I was standing (right beside the speakers) the sound was o.k. First time seeing Tendonitis and Omega Crom who did what they they do well (Tendonitis was awsome grind for sure). Meatlocker 7 sounded better than I have ever heard them (except their choice of chords of course). Now go fuck yourselves. - Tue, 2 Mar 2004 10:18pm
