Message Board > Show Reviews > Gig Review: Greenlaw Ave w/King Bong at Steamers Pub |
_Griphin_ User Info... | OK, this is a late review, but better late then never... I showed up around 9:30 for the gig. Pretty weak crowd, but at least over 100 people showed up for the free goodies. Steamers gigs are always a drunk affair, and yes, I got pretty drunk. First up, the fire dancing, which I thought was gonna happen inside, but in fact happened on Yates street. I wasn't paying much attention, but what I did see rocked. Hard to explain, unless you saw it, it was cool nonetheless (I couldn't figure out why the women were slinging paint cans, until I noticed it had to do with the sterno, and getting the small pots prepped for the flinging). Around this time, I managed to inadvertingly sell a pot leaf with LED lights to some chick on E. It's a long story, nuff said. --- OK, then Greenlaw Avenue took the stage, man this band rocks! Nice ska-type guitar work, that was cool. Got the crowd warmed up, and I hope there Euro-Tour is successful (there gigging in Scotland/Ireland/England, then taking the EuroChunnel to Italy and all points inbetween), though I mentioned to the bassist if your gonna go to Scotland ya gotta visit the single malt scotch microbreweries. But I babble. At which point, the place started packing. Good turnout, and it was cool to run into those people I did. But the strangest thing, it was a totally different crowd to the one I'm used to dealing with. Makes ya think... One comment, Steamers bar line gets really packed, I think they opened up 2 more lines, still, there has to be a better system, not to be drunken greedy or anything... --- So then we had a interesting live act with glowing things and stuff, I got a kick out of it cause i thought I was at a rave, rather then a ska/reggae gig. Still, they had fun, and that's what mattered!!! --- Then King Bong hit the stage, man that Daily coverage did not do this band justice. They ROCKED live!!! Funny thing happened. Apparently they were charging $15 for there CD, and they have Sony doing CD manufacturing/distro. Thing is, the lead singer told me that Sony failed, and they couldn't get there CDs to the gig, so they had to burn at least $300 worth of CD-R's, so I mentioned that perhaps they shouldn't charge as much as they were. So because of this, CDs sold fer $10 from that point (that was cool). It was an awesome set, they even did a Ramones cover. Like the lead singer said, once your in for a King Bong gig, you stay. Which I did, and got rather loaded. They even played my favorite tune, Call To Revolution, which you can find on the website. If this band ever plays live, check 'em out! What a fun gig, definately did some boogying (and for those who thought I was a fool, well hey I was having a blast). --- At which point, the smoking patio shut down, so I stayed for the last song and called for encore, which did happen (thanks to the band). Then I managed to stagger home, fell down and smucked my knee on the way home, yeesh! So if you didn't show up, be sure to catch King Bong live the next time they play, you in for a real treat. Peace... - Mon, 2 Feb 2004 11:03pm
Troutbreath User Info... | _Griphin_, thanks for all those very kind words! A couple of things, that was 'Burning Rhythm' doing the fire dancing. They did the fire spinning out on the street 'cause.....well,,,,burning, spinning things and drunk people in a confined space, probably not the best combination. They moved in doors and switched to glow sticks between sets. We'll have to get them back for a future show, meanwhile check out their website: http://members.shaw.ca/burningrhythm/ The saga of the CD's is a long twisted tale that still needs to be straightened out. A big thanks to Greenlaw Avenue for opening for us. They always get things percolating nicely. Sorry about your knee, maybe we should sell King Bong knee pads at the merch table. And hey, who's calling you a fool for going to a Bong show? Do you want us to send the big Gorilla around for a little visit? - Tue, 3 Feb 2004 10:36am
Zippgunn User Info... | Good grief another "CD release party" that seems to have had everything but the CD's. Remember kids, when the CD plant tells you that you'll have your CD's in "4 to 6 weeks" they are usually talking through their hat; don't believe 'em! Add at least an extra month to compensate for the usual production hitches. - Tue, 3 Feb 2004 12:00pm
Troutbreath User Info... | Ok, but how long do you have to wait until you can say the production facility is in breach of their contract? I'm used to deadlines too! I've done one-man Art shows that were booked over a year in advance and I still had to produce the artwork. Theatre productions I've been involved in are done the same way. The Belfry books shows a year and a half in advance. When I tell someone I can get it to them on time and on budget I damn well better do it or be ready to take the responsibility for being an incompetent boob. - Tue, 3 Feb 2004 12:57pm
king bong guitarist User Info... | Thanks for the positive feedback, Griphin. We had a blast as well and the turnout was great. Sorry about the outdoor fire dancers. Hey, Great White ruined it for everybody so this is about as close to 'pyro' at a rock show as you can get in Victoria. We were allowed indoor fire dancers at Soundgarden but, alas, we were allowed to do all kinds of things there that no other club lets you get away with. R.I.P. Anyway, thanks to everyone that showed up- I can't wait to do it again. - Tue, 3 Feb 2004 1:47pm

_Griphin_ User Info... | Hmmm... if a production company/plant states the CDs will be there at said date and lags, it's time to drop them like a bad habit and try for another company. I've heard too many horror stories, and it annoys me noone's bitching about it or doing anything about it. No problem about the kind words, my reviews are honest and to the point. Noone's calling me a fool, it's just that I have a little too much fun and people get freaked out about it. Seems silly, really. - Wed, 4 Feb 2004 10:48pm
