The first guy, air-drummer was by far the superior contestant. The judges were stingy with the votes because he went first so all in all he got the shaft. - Thu, 2 Jun 2005 8:16am

Although the competition was fierce, a late-entry contestant who called himself Turd Brophy (AKA Nathan Brophy) stole the show with a staggering impromptu Air rendition of Boston’s “More Than A Feeling.” Mike Demers, one of the official judges, summed up his impression of the performance by simply declaring, “When I think of what Air Guitar is all about… that’s what it should look like.” Steve Webb, who also judged the competition, agreed with Demers by saying “Dude, that was totally cool.”

After hearing the judges’ decision, Mr. Brophy was heard commenting: “Can I have that CD back? It’s not mine”.

The competition also had four runner-ups that all tied for second place:

- A solo performance of the theme from “Top Gun”,

- A faux David Lee Roth (The Reverend Donnie Black) who arrived in a stretch limo with full entourage in tow to perform Van Halen’s “Eruption”,

- A duo performance of Pantera complete with pleather-clad metal warriors, covered in sparkles and canola oil,

- And an Air Drum rendition of the Refused song “The Deadly Rhythm”.

Notable mentions include:

- A full-band full-costume Air version of Jem and the Holograms theme song,

- An impromptu Air Jam of Queen’s “We Are The Champions” that included all the runner-ups, half the Lucky Bar staff and a few spectators,

- And an encore performance by David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen performing “Runnin’ With the Devil”.

Although the event was sanctioned by the Canadian Air Guitar Championships, the national competition has been cancelled for this year. However, Mr. Brophy will be offered a position as judge for the next competition, unless he chooses to compete again.

Due to the success of the event, Lucky Bar will be dividing the competition into two categories and running two different annual contests. One will be the annual Official Air Guitar Championships held every summer, and the other will be an annual Air Band competition taking place each winter.

Lucky would like to thank all the contestants and spectators, and sponsors who helped make this historic event possible.

Pictures of the event will be posted at http://www.luckybar.ca soon. - Thu, 2 Jun 2005 12:16pm
