The other night I noticed that the guys from Bloodstone Press (Streets/3" guys) were leaving a show early. It turns out they'd had a rough day cuz someone broke in and swiped an amp and some other stuff. I told them that they should maybe think of getting the word out and maybe having a benefit show. They kind of just shrugged and said that they didn't feel like drawing particular attention to themselves since "it happens to everyone". But obviously they were pretty bummed out.

A couple of months ago Dana from Foster Kare had some of his custom drum gear ripped off from a jam space. Kind of the same scenario.. he was feeling pretty bad about it, as was everyone else, but he seemed to be just trying to chalk it up to the hazards of being a local musician. Now he's saving up.

I'd like to encourage people to get the word out whenever something like this happens. There's all sorts of reasons why.. fans understanding why paying cover charge is important, being aware of how crime impacts us, being on the alert for hot gear, and possibly finding ways to pitch in in some way to help out when this kind of thing happens. Above all, its just letting people be aware when bands going through a rough time so we can show support in whatever way we choose. (Maybe I just won't glare at that prick today - ha!)

People may not realize how devastating this can be to some musicians out there.. a lot of them keep to themselves, and may not have access to stuff while they're saving up to replace it.. and most times, music isn't just something to do, its their release. Its probably really bad for an artist's health when he/she's not able to play! It really hits home when someone fucks with the tools you need for something you put your heart into. I'd imagine it seriously makes them question a lot of stuff beyond just trying to figure out where to lay blame and how to unleash their anger now that their outlet is gone. - Sun, 10 Oct 2004 2:29pm

theft sucks, If somebody got a hold of my gear I would destroy people, If I ever saw anybody with my shit I would destroy them without asking where it came from.

it's avery shitty thing to steal from poor musicians, most musicians scrimp and save just to get meager gear and some cunt comes along and steals it.

steal form the rich and stupid, not the poor and cool - Tue, 12 Oct 2004 12:12pm

haha well put Viking. Yes theft does suck. Socan has discounted musician's insurance for its members. Probably something every band should look into. They definitely seem to be easygoing, other insurance agancies want specific alarms installed and a pile of other red tape issues. So far from what I have seen, thay have the best plan. - Tue, 12 Oct 2004 1:49pm

Do you any of you guys know anything about musicians insurance, ie. does it cover your guitars etc. inside the club? I've got a vintage axe that I would like to start bringing to shows but, the theft issue is always a concern...I talked to a guy the other day that had his '56 Gibson Les Paul stolen right off a stand on the stage while he was performing!!! - Mon, 25 Oct 2004 10:31am

I think you can get insurance to cover specific terms. I would call around and get a couple of quotes, you can have it so that it covers you on the road or at home from what I understand. Would not hurt - Tue, 26 Oct 2004 11:13am
