So I justed added a new feature to the site that will probably replace this section on the messageboard.

I've added a Musicians Directory. Just click 'Musicians' up at the top. Now you can list yourself as an individual musician. You can say what styles you play and if you are available for casual jamming, serious projects, paid gigs, or lessons.

When you go the the musicians directory you can find musicians by instrument, skill level and availability.

You can also browse through a listing of bands that are seeking musicians.

So what do you guys think? - Wed, 24 Sep 2003 4:00pm

sounds good, but what happened to the so-called Victoria Musicians listing that someone was putting together a few months ago? Never saw any evidence that it surfaced. - Thu, 25 Sep 2003 10:00am

Yeah, niether did I. Oh, well I'd been meaning to do this anyways so I'm not too concerned. THe next step is that i'm goign to link up the individual musicians and bands so you can link to a musician's current and past bands or you can view the info for all the musicians in any band. I wanted to build up the musicians database a little before that though. - Thu, 25 Sep 2003 10:49am

I can see the merits of both systems. It would be nice to be able to read a list of bass players only if that?s all I was interested in and skip all the prank posts.

There may be some small flaws though. Modesty or ego may render some players unable to properly rate their skill level. A listing might stay up long after a player finds a good home with a great band and keeps getting calls from seekers. As well dead listings could clog up such a list if they aren?t managed (what if someone moves out of town or dies). Also people might be shy about using their real names in case they owe someone money or are avoiding the cops, whatever.

It?s true the BBS style posts can be... (fill in the blank with your own horror story). They can however very be very time and situation specific. They are more conversational and more revealing than a phone book type list. A few posts back and forth and you can avoid Axl Rose or Geoffrey Dalmer. Lastly, they just naturally fade away over time.

Perhaps keep both running simultaneously until you can figure out a combination of the two that works. - Thu, 25 Sep 2003 12:07pm

That was me who started all that, and I started it because of all the slags. This was before Nev brought in the new system, so i ditched the idea. The website was completed, just didnt follow through on it. As well , this was before I actually found legit musicians to work with. Great Idea! - Thu, 25 Sep 2003 5:31pm

2bits, you've got some good points, I think I've taken care of some of them though. If you find a band and aren't looking for anything else you can just set your status to indicate that you are no longer looking for people to jam with. I will probably set it up so that it emails people every 3 months or something to enquire about their status.

The skill level thing may be a bit of a problem, but I think it will be under any system. - Sat, 27 Sep 2003 3:34pm

The main reason I'm not switching right away is definatley because of the flexibility of the messageboard. There are some situations that wouldnt' work with the new system, just yet. I haven't quite figure how to integrate the two yet.

although, it's nice how posts just fade away on the messageboard I like the idea of a listing that stays up there because some people may not find what they are looking for right away. - Sat, 27 Sep 2003 3:38pm
