Hey folks,

This has probably been asked before but...

I'm looking to put on a benefit show to help a little girl who has some medical difficulties (I won't get into it here)...

What is the best venue for such a thing. Ie. while doing an all ages show is appealing, we are open to using a club that would be cooperative as well (are there any?)

If using a legion or somewhere without a sound system, who do you recommend we call that can provide great sound on a budget? I want to see as much cash go to this little girl as possible...

Anyways, thanks for any help or guidance you can provide. - Wed, 5 Oct 2005 12:05pm

Hey Elvis. I'm not really an expert here but I thought I'd share my thoughts.

The Victoria Event Centre on Broad St is one of the, if not the, best all ages venues in Victoria. Plus it has a bar and I've been to licensed all ages shows there before. Anyway, it's a nice place.

Dan the Sound Man does great work for little money. The Centre might provide it's own sound system though, I"m not sure.

Also, I don't know what kind of music you play or what, but if you're looking for rocks bands, my band Kilamanca is willing to play for free. - Wed, 5 Oct 2005 10:20pm

The Victoria Event Centre is pretty freakin expensive if you ask me.. I don't know many people who have broken even doing shows there (plus it's more expensive to get a liquor liscence for all ages shows= requires investment)...

I've done a bunch of benefits and my suggestion is to get on board with a venue that already does their own advertising (steamers, lucky etc) because they will help advertise the show. Plus they deal with the sound guy and system etc.

It's cool that you're looking to help out and put your talent to a good cause. Good Luck.

If you need some advice, gimme an email.

depending on the bands you are planning on getting to play you may consider the arts collective as well (the 5050) as you don't have to put down any money to rent that space, they only have to approve your show. however they do have to approve of your bands/cause etc. - Thu, 6 Oct 2005 7:45am

Thanks for the info folks. I don't mind putting up a deposit, whatever... going to do whatever it takes.

Nicola, how much is expensive for Victoria Event Centre? How many people does the place hold? What is a suitable cover charge for:

a) an all ages show
b) regular, over 19 show?

I'd rather do all ages but frankly, if I can fill a venue with adults who are drinking and have more cash in their pockets, presumably we'll accomplish more.

I have 3 bands in mind already but if anyone is interested in playing ... FOR FREE ... send me some details (website, audio clips, etc.). Not sure if we are going the underage, indie rock route or going for the cover band route where people will go to dance .... but I don't see the two mixing well so its one or the other.

Keep the advice coming... oh, and if you want to help this little girl out, I have a little webpage up to gather funds via Paypal/Credit Card donation.

Every little bit helps...

I don't want to be a downer, but I've noticed that the best way to raise money doing a local rock show is to NOT TRY TO MAKE MONEY DOING A LOCAL ROCK SHOW!!! I can't stress this enough because I've seen it again and again. You book bands with no draw at a venue that costs money you pay for a sound guy plus rentals and you're lucky to break even. Most people setting up benefit shows don't know enough about making them profitable to promote them etc. You are almost better off taking the money you have to put the thing together and just make that your donation.

That being said, Nicola has made money in the past with the bar gig route. If you can book a Saturday or Friday at Steamers, you are pretty much guaranteed a crowd and they promote for you. WOW! That's awfully easy!
The only thing is you have to get yourself booked.

The other option would be to get a band that GUARANTEES a draw to play for free, which is all relative to how well you put it to them. Also there are precious few of those in town.

Take it all with a grain of salt, but approach this project with extreme caution.

Yep, thats why I'm asking questions. I intend to succeed and will front whatever money as my own donation to get this thing off the ground.

I am leaning towards a gig at a bar (assuming cooperation) on a good night with effectively the bands providing the free time (for a good cause and good fun) with established bands that draw anyways.

I'm still tempted to try an all ages show as well, if not just for a learning experience... if I can manage million dollar computer budgets for companies, surely by investing some time asking the right questions, I can manage this through and make a few bucks for a worthy cause.

Keep the comments coming - this won't just help me, presumably others will take it on themselves to pay it forward for someone else as well. If we get a jaded view towards trying these things, they'll go away completely (I do hear what you are saying K.C., that was not a jab). - Thu, 6 Oct 2005 1:34pm
