_Griphin_ User Info... | http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/4/24/141326/870 I dunno if this works the same up here in Canada, though. Still, this is scary!!! - Wed, 2 May 2007 8:20pm
lonemonk User Info... | You must be a slashdot reader Griph, that news went out on Monday of this week as well. As I understand it: SoundExchange will be taking over the duties of scanning what gets played on realtime Internet radio, in much the same way as SoundScan (I think its called) does for open-air radio programs. The difference here is that unless some other expressly stated agreement is in place between the artist and broadcaster (or some other license like Creative Commonsm, etc) SoundExchange holds the exclusive right to collect royalties on everything else. So very similarly to the CD levy here in Canada, there is the potential for other more popular artists to receive monies on your creative work if you aren't careful. I'm curious to see where it all goes, but rest assured, very small artists will not have much to protect themselves except to open their licenses to free-use or Creative Commons type things. THAT is no bad thing, I wish more would do it. Still doesn't stop money from being charged, but at least there is no ambiguity laying around waiting for SoundExchange to pick it up. In general of course, any license should benefit YOU, and limit whatever YOU don't like. So thats what you should focus on. Thats for another days' lesson. For now, musicians read up on this and see if it suits your purposes: http://creativecommons.org/ Or http://www.archive.org - Wed, 2 May 2007 9:21pm Edited: Wed, 2 May 2007 9:23pm
