Sign the petition against Oil Tankers traveling through our Waters

How about no gasoline powered cars on Vancouver Island instead. Address the problem as individuals instead of blaming it on a 'big scary' corporate.

Also, no more plastics, paints, fertilizers, fruit in the winter, home heat, etc.

No more importing from China or India so no more inexpensive musical instruments.

Otherwise any efforts to 'ban tankers' is simply hypocritical. - Tue, 11 Mar 2008 8:52am

yah because we all know driving cars on Vancouver Island causes millions of gallons of oil to coat the coastline. This friendly non treacherous coastline that isnt covered in wrecks already. - Tue, 11 Mar 2008 10:39am

That's a pretty shallow reaction - never mind that this is Vancouver *Island* and any gasoline that comes here necessarily travels by boat - tanker or ferry.

On a broader scale, the only reason we need to transport oil around is because we use it for so many things. Every time you buy a spindle of Chinese DVDRs, buy US apples in February, or drink Heineken, you accept tanker shipments.

Signing a petition 'banning' them is hypocritical. - Tue, 11 Mar 2008 12:12pm

There are alternatives to tanking oil through our waters. I'd rather see a pipeline six lanes fucking wide than a balloon filled with oil travelling thru B.C.'s 850 miles of jagged coastline - Mr Hearse.

For the record, the ban on tankers is status quo.

If the ban on tankers is approved nothing will change -- they're already banned. This is a movement against a change allowing oil tankers along BC's coast, not for a change banning them. Think carefully on the difference.

And I'm willing to go out on a limb and presume that relatively few American apples are shipped in oil tankers. - Tue, 11 Mar 2008 4:46pm

While we're at it, how about banning fish farms, and wolf hunts? - Tue, 11 Mar 2008 5:24pm

Spilling a tanker load of cd's n apples on the coast is a far cry from anything being discussed, but hey Ill take a crate of Heinekens, bring on the rusty unsafe beer tankers! - Wed, 12 Mar 2008 2:05am

Once while hiking the westcoast trail, I encountered thousands of brand new running shoes that had been spiilled. Good thing too, because I had melted my fancy hiking boots trying to dry them out. - Wed, 12 Mar 2008 4:24am

Once in Takapuna (just north of Auckland) we had several hundred kilos of cocaine wash up on the beach. Apparently container ships are continuously losing containers overboard too. - Wed, 12 Mar 2008 8:11am

Once while "campin" in Skutz, a guy I know passed out to close to the campfire. He woke up screaming as his socks had melted to his feet.
It was quite hilarious. - Wed, 12 Mar 2008 6:10pm
