Id like to do a poll:

Why do you listen to a band?

Which is the most important to you.

A. You like their music, you like the way you feel when you listen to it. You like the words, the bass, the guitars, the drums. You connect with the band on an emotional level.

B. . What they do for the community. Their beleifs. The things they stand for/talk about on stage. You can look up to the band and their efforts, kind of like a pollitical leader. You connect with them on a more pollitical/intellectual level. - Wed, 4 Oct 2006 4:05am Edited: Wed, 4 Oct 2006 4:07am

I would tend to say a delicate mix of both A and B....shaken not stirred.

It really depends on the medium I think. It is hugely important for musicians/bands to voice the issues that can't be addressed like they were in the days of writing a letter to your MP because you were pissed at him. (Not that the writing of such a song would have the same effect, it merely gets things off the collective chest.)
Music is a real tempurature gauge. It tells us who we are as a society, where we want to go, where we've been and where we wish we never were.

You can speak to the heart but you have to sing to the mind from the heart...if that makes any sense.
In short, balance and tastefulness is key.

But taste is the enemy of art isn't it really? - Wed, 4 Oct 2006 8:20am Edited: Wed, 4 Oct 2006 8:21am

I'd have to say A. If the band members do or don't excuse themselves after they fart what the hell do I care? When I throw a CD in I'm not listening their political views 'cause I don't listen to that kind of metal. - Wed, 4 Oct 2006 7:25pm

I'm very picky about vocals, so I gotta like the vocals first. Then there's the overall rhythm and sound... what the band/artist has decided to do with the song through instruments etc... lots of bass + great drumming =bonus...
Then sure, political views are okay... I mean it's a plus if I agree with them (Jello Biafra- Spoken word albums). Then there's the backing of the song, the emotion that's expressed through it (which I find is done mainly through vocals which is why I'm picky about that). You can tell when an artist/band doesn't mean what they say when they sing it wrong... there's gotta be a certain amount of fire, or something within the song that stirs something definite. - Fri, 6 Oct 2006 1:19pm

I am kinda split on this one liek many of you.

I am in a band, and i would feel very uncomfortable trying to get people to follow me on a pollitical level. i dont know why, it just seems so wrong. However, some lrycis could be taken as pollitical.

So i dont know. - Mon, 9 Oct 2006 7:26am Edited: Mon, 9 Oct 2006 7:32am

It's all about looks. If its a bunch of guys wearing eyeliner and those girly-emo pants, I'm in. Why IS this in the C+Q? How could it possibly controversial?
I think NNB's reply makes the most sense.

lol there was hope to spark some "pollitics dont belong in music" attacks along with some "music doesn't belong in pollitics" attacks and then some "I DESERVE TO BE A POLITICIAN" attacks and then maybe some "MY ON STAGE NAME IS JESUS CHRIST" lol.

i duno.

A doesnt = a band with nothing to say. it just = a band that doesnt go on about world pollitics. They connect to you on emotional levels about other issues and things that people go through in live like love, hate, etc.

why does a band have to always bitch about world pollitics.

it gets old. Remember the anti-george bush phase? Everyone was all about dishing george bush. but isnt it obvious he was simple the puppet all along?

but ea. i think people just feel better about themselves if they bithc about the world. regardless of if they actualy DO anything about it. - Tue, 10 Oct 2006 6:02pm Edited: Tue, 10 Oct 2006 6:09pm
