Direct talks with Hezbollah urged
MPs tour Lebanon areas
Bomb damage called `criminal'

SPECIAL TO THE STAR

AITAROUN, LEBANON—The Canadian government must begin direct talks with militant groups such as Hezbollah to effectively bring a peaceful end to conflicts like the one that has ravaged Lebanon this summer, Toronto Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj says.

Standing at the spot where an Israeli air strike killed several members of a Montreal family last month, Wrzesnewskyj said Israel's summer offensive against Lebanon was nothing less than "state terrorism."

"Over 1,200 dead and counting. Over 40,000 apartments and houses flattened. A country's infrastructure dismembered. You look around here," said Wrzesnewskyj (Etobicoke Centre). "I believe what's happened is absolutely criminal."

It was one of the strongest statements a Liberal MP has made against Israel since July 12, when it launched air, land and sea attacks after guerrillas from the militant Shiite group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others in a cross-border raid.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper initially called the ensuing Israeli onslaught a "measured response" to the raid, but as the civilian death toll mounted, he later toned down his comments saying such judgments had become more difficult as the war escalated.

But for the three Canadian opposition MPs who yesterday toured the wasteland of south Lebanon on a fact-finding mission led by the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations, Israel's attacks here have been anything but measured.

"Those who were injured and killed on the Israeli side of the border feel equally devastated, but the extent of the damage is far greater here. And to say that Israel's response was a measured response is just so far out of whack from reality," said NDP MP Peggy Nash (High Park-Parkdale).

Canada's Mideast policy should be based on international law

Aug. 22, 2006.

EHAB LOTAYEF- Toronto Star

In an article in the weekend Saturday Star, former justice minister Irwin Cotler challenged the idea that Canada should not take sides in order to be "even-handed" in international conflicts, particularly the Middle East. Cotler argued that the "cornerstone of Canadian foreign policy in the Middle East is respect for the security, well-being and legitimacy of Israel." Arab Canadians beg to disagree, Ehab Lotayef writes.

Some people may want to understand "even-handedness" as standing idle and not taking a position, as being passive. Not us. We understand it as taking sides but basing our decision on justice and international law, not on the strength of supporting lobbies.

This brings us directly to the "principle" listed by former justice minister Irwin Cotler in his weekend article in the Saturday Star. Why should the well-being of Israel be rated higher than the well-being of any other nation or state in the world? What kind of racism or favouritism would that be and why would Canada be obliged to base its foreign policy in the Middle East on it?

It would aid the cause of peace if Canada dropped Hezbollah from a list of banned terrorist organizations, according to two Canadian MPs on a fact-finding mission to Lebanon.
When asked if he were in favour of Hezbollah being taken off the terror list, Etobicoke Liberal Borys Wrzesnewskyj said: "Yes, I would be."
He likened the situation in the Middle East to Northern Ireland, where "if there wasn't the possibility for London to negotiate with the IRA, you'd still have bombings."
"Hezbollah has a political wing, they have members of parliament, they have two cabinet ministers," Wrzesnewskyj said. "You want to encourage politicians in this military organization so that the centre of gravity shifts to them."

Liberals are 90% fuckwits, they're the ones who banned it's promotion for Charity purposes- in the first place- to have them rid, I was somewhat content with that back then. Now what the fuck?

Otherwise, I'd be interested in hearing Irwin Cotler's stance on the issue. Since, he is a Jew. Although, I almost 110% sure, that he wouldn't go for the let's include, 'the Hizbullah thing,' into our everday living and lifestyles- in Canada.

The reason the entire fiasco started was over the kiddnapping of two Israeli Soldiers, (one of which is a Canadian Citizen serving as a reservist in Israeli Military) kidnapped by Hizbullah, and is still being held hostage, or dead.

What a stupid, stupid, Po-ll-ack. (er, I mean Ukranian) Not too good for counting on Votes the Liberals need. Hez. 'Pollz-ack'.

His next move must be a campaign for supporting an Orchestral symphony in the Name of- establishing Iran's Nuclear Facilities? Seriously, I can't believe everything, that's played on the news or printed in the newspapers.
