Lordpatch User Info... | http://xymphora.blogspot.com/2006/06/more-on-toronto-17.html CSIS has an unfortunate history of using informants. In the late 80’s, the terrorist threat du jour was extreme right-wing terrorism. CSIS hired a man named Grant Bristow to infiltrate right-wing groups. He did such a good job that he almost ended up as the leader, and how far he went in fitting in with his extremist pals is till the subject of controversy. Unfortunately for CSIS, there were no right-wing extremist groups to speak of in Canada prior to Bristow. xymphora http://ender.indymedia.org/?q=node/359 - Tue, 6 Jun 2006 10:29pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Our Canadian government has always been paranoid as to what there citizens might do, hence why a number of publications have always been banned (like The Anarchist Cookbook, which was a joke publication anyways). - Wed, 7 Jun 2006 11:21am

Mofo User Info... | yeah paranoid! I just can't understand why the Canadian government would want to ban a book whose own fucking author wanted it to be discontinued! According to its author it sure didn't seem like a joke to me. "The central idea to the book was that violence is an acceptable means to bring about political change."...William Powell "During the years that followed its publication, I went to university, married, became a father and a teacher of adolescents. These developments had a profound moral and spiritual effect on me. I found that I no longer agreed with what I had written earlier and I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the ideas that I had put my name to. In 1976 I became a confirmed Anglican Christian and shortly thereafter I wrote to Lyle Stuart Inc. explaining that I no longer held the views that were expressed in the book and requested that The Anarchist Cookbook be taken out of print. The response from the publisher was that the copyright was in his name and therefore such a decision was his to make 226 not the author's. In the early 1980's, the rights for the book were sold to another publisher. I have had no contact with that publisher (other than to request that the book be taken out of print) and I receive no royalties. Unfortunately, the book continues to be in print and with the advent of the Internet several websites dealing with it have emerged. I want to state categorically that I am not in agreement with the contents of The Anarchist Cookbook and I would be very pleased (and relieved) to see its publication discontinued. I consider it to be a misguided and potentially dangerous publication which should be taken out of print." William Powell - Wed, 7 Jun 2006 11:57am Edited: Wed, 7 Jun 2006 11:58am
_Griphin_ User Info... | An example of some books banned (originally?!?): Might is Right (some white racists views on the concentration camps, idea was already beaten to death 20 years ago), Poor Mans James Bond (any of the books released, pity he released them in PDF format :), or anything to do with blowing up shit, or how to manufacturer stuff to blow up shit with. It's so frustrating, I hate it when a person's views are censored, no matter how much I disagree with that idea. A long time ago, Loompanics Unlimited was where I ordered numerous books. Interesting thing about the Powell comment, I saw him being interviewed on TV and he said the same thing pretty well. He hasn't been paid royalities?!? WTF?!? When it comes to the explosive sections, never trust anything you read. And to think, we used to collect that type of information on T.H.C. I still need to chat with Tommy regarding getting one of those CDs he's selling of backups of the txt files. Pity Powell went all wierd and stuff, he was just being rebellious when the book was put together. - Wed, 7 Jun 2006 4:07pm Edited: Wed, 7 Jun 2006 4:33pm
Mofo User Info... | I am not a huge fan of censorship myself, but I am when it concerns the safety and well being of others than I would have to say it is well worth it. Call it the state keeping the man down or facist or whatever you want but it really comes down to safety of other. Examples are that guy in Vancouver (can't remember his name) but he created a magazine devouted to children porn and rape and the likes of that shit. I believe in free expression and having your say, but again when that "expression" involves destruction of others well being well SOMEBODY has to draw the line. Just my opinion.... - Wed, 7 Jun 2006 5:43pm Edited: Wed, 7 Jun 2006 5:44pm
