Lordpatch User Info... | ...The Post concludes that more money and more power for CSIS and the RCMP is needed to root out evildoers from our communities. But will either of these strategies really work? Can more security really attack the roots of extremism? Can lip service to multiculturalism and tolerance do any better? Former RCMP security expert Tom Quiggin offers in the Citizen today’s most sensible solution. Quiggin suggests that Canadians actually try to understand Islam, rather than simply tolerate it. http://www.maisonneuve.org/index.php?&page_id=12&article_id=2288 http://victoria.indymedia.org/news/2006/06/50253.php - Mon, 5 Jun 2006 11:27pm
jay brown User Info... | Yup understanding it is a great idea, but, lets be realisitc it isnt going to happen. I betcha the majority of people out there havent even read the bible or gone to church and we are supposed to be a christian country. Why would they take the time to read up on a whole different religion if they cant read up on the one that is supposedly theirs already. - Tue, 6 Jun 2006 7:27am
Mofo User Info... | I am all for tolerance and understanding different cultures. You can be a scholar of Islam and still not "negotiate" with extremists. These people (extremists) want you dead! Are you going to sit there and tell me that by not arresting someone you suspect of wanting to kill (regardless of race colour or religion) you and thousands of others is in someway rational or productive towards a more culturally understanding society? Come on! By your rational, simply reading up on Islam and understanding it will make the problem go away. The problem isn't Islam as a whole, not even a half for that matter. The problem is and always has been extremism and while knowledge is a definate asset is combating it, you need to defend yourself from a force that doesn't care how much you know about it....period. This really all boils down to one thing....human pshycology, you can paint it as religion and politics all you want but so long as humans attempt to coexist there will unfortunately never be peace, its simply not in our nature or is it our blood stained history. I really don't see how these recent arrests are an intentional attempt to plant seeds of hate as you are so obviously suggesting. Be it terrorism or crime you need to arm yourself with both knowledge and force in order to defend yourself. If we are to look at the opposite side of the coin, in many of these countries where extremism is born there is little or NO tolerance of culture let alone religion. Canada is a shining example of diversity and relative peace...all these cultures all these religions with freedom to boot. If I was Muslim or Jewish or of different color, and suppose I lived right next door to you and I was arrested for plotting to blow you and your family up, would you be so quick to jump to my defence? Would you just say....oh big brother is just arresting my neighbour for good PR, and to spread the seeds of HATE against my neighbour? While I fully appreciate your fresh and inquisitive outlook, you really should not doubt anything established SO much as to just coldly dismiss it as hate spreading when it is really just a simple matter of self-defence. And no I am not in anyway shape or form advocating treating Muslims different on account of these arrests, that just doesn't need to happen nor should it ever. The RCMP and CSIS and DND are not useless entities, they are there to protect you, and all Canadians at home and abroad, whether they be of mixed race, or religion or whatever. It never ceases to AMAZE me just how complacent Canadians can be. So many sit there and think that "oh no nothing bad could ever happen to us, we're Canadians, the world loves us!" That is called one, no sorry two things (of which we regularily accuse our neighbours to the south of) ignorance and arrogance. The threat is REAL and in calling it so does not make me an automatic racist and Hate seed spreading war monger as I am sure you would LOVE to imply. - Tue, 6 Jun 2006 2:23pm
Mofo User Info... | I just realized where your carbon copied idealism comes from and it really explains a lot to me. Huey P Newton....he had some great ideas for sure, some of them more admirable than others but, in general he was an extremist in his own right. He incited revolution through violent means which is EXACTLY the same thing as terrorism. And, while I agree that African American citizens of his time were not treated fairly, it sure as hell doesn't justify him shooting a cop and promoting his followers of the Black Panthers to follow in his footsteps. Ghandi did more against the mighty British Empire without so much as raising his voice! I don't mean to trash your mentor or idol be it as he may, because like I said from what I know of him in general he was a good man with some big ideas and some bad ideas.... along with some bad habits, drugs, imbezelling funds , murder etc etc. (I know I know it was just the poilice "framing him" right) And while it may very well be that the government of Canada is taking extra measures to defend itself.....it is the same philosophy Mr. Newton taught.....self defence my friend....self defence. - Tue, 6 Jun 2006 5:20pm Edited: Tue, 6 Jun 2006 5:21pm
