One band that I saw open for Suffocation in Seattle...
Non-Existence: I don't even know where to start with this band. As I was watching them I was thinking about how I should just do an entry in my livejournal about how bad this band was. They're not even worth that. First off, the bassist had fishnet stockings on his arms, spiked up hair and goth boots. This just screams the word "No" at me in such high volumes that I want to heckle people for even looking in that retards direction. Next we have the drummer, who might as well have drove a tractor onstage, miked it and just turned it on and off. The triggers he used were too loud and too stupid sounding, they completely drowned out everything else but the vocals. Then they showed the audience how to do this thing called the "meathook". This is where you curve your index finger, as they're playing, to look like...a meathook. I'd understand this if their name had something to do with a meathook. It doesn't. This was the dumbest gimmick since matching jumpsuits. The band was trying so hard to be Mortician. If you ask me, Mortician is a pretty shitty band to try and copy. Also noted was the presence of a large screen with their logo on it in front of what was distorted music videos from Much More Music and Bravo. I literally saw the credits for the artist and video on the screen as they played. This is the worst band i've ever seen in my life. That's saying alot because i've seen Hypocrisy twice.

Definitely the worst band I've EVER seen in my 21 years of existance, has to be Blood Nasty. I bought a beer at the start of their set, which I ended up slamming in about 2 seconds just so I could get the fuck out of there.

Eternal Conspiracy comes to mind, the Dutch blatant Cradle of Filth ripoff that thankfully does no longer exist. Nice people, but I'm glad that they moved on to ripping off other bands and having gotten alot better at it.

I saw Dark Tranquility back in 1999 on an otherwise pretty impressive bill (+ Aeternus, Behemoth (starting to head towards their death metal dismay), Deicide), but they were just terrible. Nothing of the power and grandeur of albums like Skydancer and The Gallery was left, and when they did play a song from that last one it sounded to me like they toned it way way down just to match the gayness of their more recent efforts at the time. Horrible. I hear that they're kind of back on track again but I haven't really checked them out since.

I'm not going to name Victorian bands or out of town bands that I've seen in Vic, but of those ones there were a couple of dreadful bland death metal bands and horrible female-fronted crust/punk/metal outfits. Nowadays, I prefer to skip such a show if the poster says "female fronted" or "with female vocalist". - Sat, 11 Mar 2006 7:14pm

Aaargh, when a person gets on stage to perform for a crowd, they have to expect that people will both like and dislike them. That is a reality of life. If someone takes a bad review that much to heart, they should really consider not performing publicly,,,masturbation or otherwise.
That being said, I am not ruthless enough to list the terrible locals I have seen. That would just be mean. - Sat, 11 Mar 2006 9:07pm

Tyler,I can't believe you would be so stupid as to inject yourself into oscene politics when you have a show on college radio. You should at least maintain the pretense of objectivity.

However now that I know what you look like and know your full name. I look forward to the opportunity school you. Remember this quote, "The toes you step on on your way up are connected to the asses you kiss on your way down".

Taste is subjective and not a measure of quality. Consider yourself served.

There is nothing I like better than a well-placed and effective quote.

I think we have to remember, however, that this is someone who can't get into anything but all-ager shows yet. Let's try and think back to what WE were like when we were 18. Now throw hosting a radio show onto that ego. I probably would have done the same thing. - Sun, 12 Mar 2006 12:22pm

How cliche, congrats to Tyler for being honest with his opinions, and having the balls to speak them, if he likes
every band and only says good things about all the bands
then his opinions would be meaningless. The only people who
could possibly take offence to his statement would be
members of those bands or their friends, instead of threatening to "school" someone, why not ask for some
reasons for the negative review and then possibly improving the band. People involved in the arts need to
have thick skins. - Sun, 12 Mar 2006 2:15pm

I'm surprised Despised Icon hasn't made this list yet...I'll admit, for the hardcore/"death-core" thingy I guess they're good at what they do, but the fight-dancing-live-show...come on...COME ON...that was the worst live show for certain.

And as far as just bands are concerned, I have to say Discordance Axis was probably the worst band I have ever heard. Coffee-grinding-death-core as far as I'm concerned. Fuck, with that singer, they should call it 'Ritalin-Core.' I think his parents must have taken away his Sega system when he was a kid, maybe that's why he's still in a tantrum. And the fact that they try to make these vocals work with their 'abstract lyrics.' I absolutely detest people who intellectually masturbate to appear like they have some real enlightenment to their poetic speel, when they don't! Reading their lyrics reminds me of why poems are like children: They're beautiful to their creators, but when they want to show them to me I find them rather ugly and fucking irritating. The only Discordance Axis in existence is the one in-between my nutsack and my asshole. Fuck this band! - Mon, 13 Mar 2006 12:59am

Watch your back?.Holy crap, if your going to put yourself on a stage where people are watching you play expect some of them not to like you. That's really as simple as it gets. If you cant take the criticism find yourself a hobby where you arent dealing with the public at all. Worst bands I have ever seen....hmmm. Fucked if I know most of the really bad ones I just ignored and went outside for a smoke. There were a couple here and there that were so bad I had to watch, sort of like a car accident. Flipper were so bad it was almost unbelievable. But that made it great to watch. Every single Yeknob show, but once again, so bad it was entertaining as hell. The ones that were just plain boring or sort of bad, I just didnt pay attention. - Mon, 13 Mar 2006 10:03am

of couse there are some "bands" (a loose term) that plain out suck,... you can't start out sounding like triple platinum! I am sure there are bands out that ended up "making it" that have been the subject of so much scrutiny.
One thing I hate about the music scene is the constant dogging that goes on between bands... everyones after that big pie in the sky. If a band sucks they don't need another band to fucking point that out to them....thats what an audience is for....or lack thereof eventually, its simple enough mathematics, no gigs + no fans = you suck! try something else or hang up your supposed talent and move on to being a productive member of society with a mortgage, 4 kids and the mini van you used to use between shows..... - Mon, 13 Mar 2006 10:58am

Bob Stinson:

reviews exist, critics exist. they're in zines, magazines, everywhere. personal views. we're talking about art here so everything is open to interpretation.

there's nothing wrong with not liking bands. and there's nothing wrong with expressing that I don't like bands. there's even bands that I don't like with members who I really like and am good friends with. I'm obviously expressing only my view, I'm sure a lot of other people like those bands. just because I have a radio show doesn't mean I have to like everything. I've talked about bands I don't like, and what I don't like on my radio show. and fuck, read cfuv's "renegade radio" publication, we're ASKED to give our honest opinion on album reviews whether they are positive or negative.

"Taste is subjective and not a measure of quality."
I agree with that of course. Did you read what I even said? I said "listing what I believe to be the worst". As in, MY view. Not solid fact or anything along those lines, just the bands I liked the least.

I should watch my back because I didn't like a few bands?? Listen to yourself. I can't even comprehend how warped your frame of mind on this topic is. I saw some bands and didn't like their music, and now I'm being threatened?

I didn't dish any mean comments out other than saying I think they're the worst out of what I've seen. I said nothing against who they are, only my view of their music.

if I said I liked everything then I would be completely devoid of personal opinion.

the only thing I feel guilty about is that some bands troll these forums and could feel a little bit hurt that some kid doesn't like their music. but is that even a big deal? like I said they could read the exact same thing in a zine or newspaper or anything.

if by schooling me you meant that you'd get a rise out of me from your weird response of singling me out for not liking some bands, you totally did it. good job or whatever.

J-Rab:
sorry I didn't like your boyfriend's band :( but I would have to disagree with you about the age thing, I don't think the extra 2 or 3 years you have on me have really changed a lot. There is no ego element here in this discussion, I just didn't like a couple freaking bands. - Mon, 13 Mar 2006 7:31pm

Point taken. I grew up with some early-era Napalm Death/Carcass and the such in the early 90's, but I'm not as heavy into grindcore anymore, so I'll admit my rant is rather biased. Shit man, I can't even spell my sentences right and I missed the founding jock-rock band that this thread was based upon....maybe I am still burnt out...I meant to say DA's vocals were what GOT under my skin the most...fuck I can't stand them...I don't know, with bands like Pig Destroyer, it's different, I totally dig their concept, but there's something about DA that annoys the shit out of me... - Fri, 17 Mar 2006 2:28am Edited: Fri, 17 Mar 2006 2:32am

DA honestly wouldn't be so bad if they got rid of the hardcore vox. I could even take the painfully blatant breakdowns in stride. Mostly because their drummer is really good and the music is fairly "techy" in a Dilinger/Ion Dissonance kind of way. Their first EP with just the brutal vox is pretty awesome. But then slammy hardcore comes along and snakes its vile clutches into everything cool. Now they are of the lame. - Fri, 17 Mar 2006 9:57am Edited: Fri, 17 Mar 2006 10:01am

ha! I just figured him for another butt-face!

Some of those mellower art-rock kind of bands around town are truly awful. My friend Kris' theory is that they're influenced by good bands in their genres who play sloppy & quirky & off-key for effect - but the thing is those bands know how to use it and have actual abilities. These kids don't, and they slop out all over the place and are too lazy to learn their instruments and don't feel the need, cuz they're not discerning enough to know the difference. Anyway, I've been horrified venturing out to see some of this stuff. True posers.

At least in heavier genres, the clueless feel the pressure to keep their chops up. - Sat, 18 Mar 2006 10:11am Edited: Sat, 18 Mar 2006 10:14am

I saw Underoath when they opened for Coheed & Cambria. Underoath sucked ass. The poseur keyboardist really ruined it for me...the guy would hit one key, then thrash around like he was the only thing holding the song together, then hit another key, and do it all over again....for the whole damn set. They had more roadies than fans, the drumset was so big that it needed a U-Haul trailer, and the bass player played one of those guitar/keyboard basses.

I have seen literally thousands of fucking horrible shows but the absolute worst one was (drum roll please)... Kinnie Starr when she backed up the band I was in at the NBI. Combining a complete inability to play her guitar with gawdawful songs about her vagina and a "bi-lingual" "rap" song "sung" to a fucked up under-recorded backup tape (prepared by a "super well known DJ" that I had never heard of, naturally) she literally tortured the, shall we say, working class crowd (mostly spillover from the peeler bar next door which closed at midnight) with her pompous bullshit until, during a recital of some of her (wait for it) fucking POETRY they could stand no more, heckling her mercilessly which prompted her to chastise trhem for having no respect for her "art" and basically having an on stage hissy fit. The amazing thing about this whole debacle was that she was signed to a major label soon afterward and, when she went to L.A. to play a "showcase" (code for "pay us money and you can play in our trendy bar") she pulled exactly the same shenanigans which resulted in a fire drill for the exits from all the music execs that were foolish enough to show up. After a head office shakeup at her label she was dropped like an Italian hand grenade and went on to bigger and better things (like the Cirque du Soliels porn show from which she was reportedly fired). Now she backs up other useless douchebags. Truly a has been that never was. - Tue, 24 Oct 2006 11:23am

Alls I can add is that The Fiery Furnaces were the most prentious pieces of shit I've ever seen. They were amazingly bad....

As ar as Slaveco goes - I actually really liked 'em the one time I saw 'em at Logan's.

LOL at the Kinnie Starr "review"!! That was good.... - Wed, 25 Oct 2006 12:30am

Worst thing I've ever seen live was Smashmouth opening for U2. I mean, honestly.. Smashmouth.. and U2? What the hell business does Smashmouth have playing on the same stage, nevermind the same show?

They were absolutely terrible, though - like they hadn't bothered to do a sound check and were just rehearsing or something. At one point their singer made some comment like "Hey, I know I ain't Bono, but COME ON!".

Bad, bad, bad. And when I was 13, my mom took me to see Young MC, being opened by The Maestro Fresh Wes. Of course, at the time I loved it...

I quite enjoyed Econoline Crush the one time I saw them at Edgefest one year.. - Tue, 31 Oct 2006 2:54pm
