Wondering what you people (mainly those who are black) think of the term "Ebonics"

I for one don't see how it does anything other than associate black people "*ebon*ics" with mindless slurr.

If they taught the confederate jargen in schools and labelled it "caucasianotics" for example, I'd assume the title meant, this is how all white people like to talk, like mindless morons.

I don't see how "ebonics" ever got accepted and is any different.

If you ask me, it should just be referred to as gangstah slang, not associated with everyone dawning ebony skin.

Man just watch Chris Rock do stand up, he points out the difference between black people and in his own words ni@#as, I agree no matter what form of media try to portray stereotypes as fact, it doesn't take away from reality, 1: I can't spell and 2: the television makes us stupid.

For your reflection:

NAACP representatives weren't laughing during Bill Cosby's remarks Monday night at a D.C. gala commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision.
Cosby, who was honored for his massive donations to black colleges, had organizers gasping when he contrasted the '60s civil-rights pioneers with some of today's African-Americans.

"These people marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around," he declared. "The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids - $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'... read more here: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/gossip/story/195075p-168538c.html - Thu, 20 May 2004 4:28pm

Ebonics are just a variation on a variation on a variation. Thats all what language is, variations on other tounges. English itself has taken from a bunch of languages, ever notice that? Communication is still in it's place and that's all that is important. - Sat, 22 May 2004 1:17pm

Ok, nobody in the linguistic community talks about "ebonics" anymore.... There is something that they call African American Vernacular English, or AAVE, that arose (there's some controversy here, but I'll take the middle route) as a result of the traditional seperation between white and black communitites in the south, and which is a mixture between creoles between English and various African languages, and British accents and dialect that early slaves would have picked up from their kidnappers/traders......

"Ebonics" and AAVE are _not_ gangsta-speak.... That's a stack of slang that operates within AAVE (and which sounds ridiculous when spoken within Standard English.... I think you homies know what I'm sayin', fo shizz.....), but it isn't AAVE.....

Note that the Linguistic community doesn't place value on languages, and that AAVE is linguistically legitimate as the Queen's English..... Sociolinguists, however, recognize the great difference in social and culture value that different languages can have, ususally ranked with the relative power ans status of the speaker..... - Sun, 23 May 2004 6:49am
