wolf User Info... | welfare is important because many people who cannot work, due to disabilities, children, lack of skills, language, etc., need a way to live; since the system forces us to pay for things that should be our right as animals born to this planet, that is food and shelter. keep in mind that it is "the system" that is trying to take welfare away. its not as black and white as some of the above statements would prefer to think. Welfare was put into place when the Canadian government was more socialist in its view---i don't mean communist, i mean that there was actually some consideration for the poor(yes there are gradations of morality in differing governmental systems). Its not only "lazy people who don't want to work" on welfare---thats comic book stuff . you read those sorts of things in the mainstream press. as for abusing welfare, that is taking it because you don't want to work a lousy dead end job, keep in mind that royal band of canada evades millions of dollars in taxes a year, far more than medical and welfare and old age pension all put together. So who's ripping who off? The social saftey net amounts to about a mere %5 percent of our defecit--- the poor are just easy targets for scapgoating, which companies like the royal bank of canada use to cover their asses. like i said, easy target to put in the headlines of papers that these sorts of companies own. frankly i would rather take the state's money and give nothing in return rather than work at macdonalds and "serve", i.e. be servile---at least one has their time to commit to cultural and revolutionary activities, or whatever. Abuse the system or let the system abuse you? We all contribute to "the system" , its somthing we did not choose to live under but unfortunately we do, right? the trick is to limit your participation and work towards some other ideas, ideas which care more for general well being. meanwhile we have to live. You want welfare cut? then what? well...you have more homeless people for one....wages go down even farther because there is a larger, more desperate, labor pool(don't forget, no matter what the politicians tell you, there are not enough jobs for everyone---the system depends on this fact to keep wages low), so if you thing welfare cuts don't effect you because you work a job with decent pay, think again. The ruling elites want welfare cut, old age pension cut, disability benefits cut, medical privatized, and the country's natural resources privatized. when medical is privatized it will be american companies in control of that element, its already happening; the deals are being made now. when our resources are privatized it will be american companies controlling---its already happening; the working forest initiative, which 98% voted against, got pushed through---it privatized most public lands(native land really), guess who controls a large section? weyerhauser(USA). when the poor are on the street, and we're all begging for a job, we will all get to work in yankee sweatshops, just like our brothers and sisters in Mexico, or any other american controlled sector for that matter. Social cuts are part of a much bigger initiative so perhaps we should think a little before attacking eachother hmmm?. - Fri, 26 Mar 7:56pm - Fri, 26 Mar 2004 9:09pm
raw_terrorist_bastards User Info... | first off Wolf, thank you for the reply. The main reason for that outbirst, was a reaction to the "oppose, occupy, and disrupt" propaganda. these are obviously ripped off techniques that are part of the punk/ protest medium. The fact that this is being used proves that there is misunderstanding about how the punk movement has evolved in the sense of creating our own alternatives to this shit system. All this is doing is fucking advertising for another group and hiding behind weak meaningless slogans. I dont stand on either side of the fence, so before you make accusations and preassumptions about my motives, then try to justify them with facts and figures, maybie we should be looking at what is really relevant in our own lives, and stop making exuses, and hiding behind false pretenses. I agree that people do need assistance in one form or another. I myself have been homeless and in the shit. and quite frankly, it was a fuck of alot more repressive to the extent that it made Victoria look like fucking disneyland. I am a single parent, and i have been on welfare, and food stamps..etc... These methods are modes of control designed to keep you locked in. To make the exuse that it is "taking" money from the government instead of "giving" it back is really weak. First off, we are all guilty of "giving" whether or not we are are wage slaves, or welfare recipients in the manner in which whom we support monitarily ( i.e. bastard companys, multinationals, hydro/power companys..etc..)the key is as you already know, deciding whom to support as a consumer, rather that how the money is obtained.. I am NOT pro work, or pro welfare..I think this fucking system is shit, and i wont allow myself to be babysat by it...Dont like work? Homeless? Punk? Create a fucking alternative!! Start exploring squatting laws, start a fucking FNB.. the possabilitys are endless...giving up and making exuses to stay on welfare being a punk, and then wasting energy organizing to extend / change the same shitpile that you need to stay alive, while supporting a political bandwagonning coalition is bloody insulting, degrading, and proves there will be no sight of "real" change, if the energies within the punk movement arent changed first. As far as the rest of the community, with this particular issue, let them fight..i do stand behind people in need, but as far as punx go, we need a different approach. I have organized ARA, FNB and a service advisory for squatters in my time, in a city that had REAL problems..like it being illegal to be homeless, nazis running rampant in the streets etc... Lets focus on the real shit, and how we want to change it as punks not the fucking systems methods... Cheers... A//E - Sat, 27 Mar 2004 12:04am
Zac User Info... | wouldnt disruptive tactics (IE: direct action) be a form of "not using the systems methods"? it is protests infact, that ARE the systems methods, as they are sanctioned and controlled by the government (please protest behined the parelement buildings, please do not tread on the grass) and sticking to these regulations have gotten us nowhere in the past. I think i know the group that made these posters, and believe me, these are not just slogans to hide behined, and the are not trying to put the credit for their ations on the punk movement, they simply understand that the movement in itself is independant of the system, therefore it seems logical to hand them out at a punk show, as there are many people who agree with this tactic, even if it is not you, it is some of us, and thats who they were trying to reach. The goal of extending welfare, though it seems hypocritical to try to extend the help of a system we disagree with, is not for the punks, but the single mothers and the poor peoples who are being abused by this system, we cant tear it all down right away, but we cant sit idley by and watch these people who truly need it at this point in time be abused by a government that doesnt care either, the idea here is to make a change in the way things run, so these people wont be on the streets in a few months.. these peopel arent punks, or the type that would enjoy living in a squat trying to get enough food for themselves and their two children. the protest isnt for the punk rockers man, its for the victims. - Tue, 30 Mar 2004 2:45pm
