Teste Coils User Info... | totally... they rock - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 11:12am
_Griphin_ User Info... | Hold on, there not technically signed yet. According to The Zone FM, 604 will distribute the album in Canada "if" they get picked up by a label in the states. If they don't get picked up for distribution in the States, then 604 Records will drop them. - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 11:59am
Nik Olaz User Info... | hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 12:07pm
Pierce User Info... | They have to be signed to be dropped..COngrats guys,,goodluck! Oh yeah, and the ZONE knows ALL! hehe - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 12:08pm
Zippgunn User Info... | So all they have to do, then, is the really difficult part (get a US label to sign them) and then 604 will "distribute" them in the giant music megopolis of Canada and pick up the slack when all the hard work is done. Wow, what a deal! - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 1:03pm
Anonymous User Info... | That is the standard deal that Jonathan Simkin offered a few Victoria bands... - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 1:51pm
el fuckface-o User Info... | el fuckface-o in parenthesis. excerpts from the Armchair Cynics bio from their half-functioning and slower than molasses website.: What is up with Victoria B.C these days? (victoria is crapping out musical diarrhea like hhh, nelly furtardo and swollen members, that's what) The birth place of such musical heavyweights as Hot Hot Heat, Nelly Furtado, and Swollen Member has done it again. (yes, victoria has crapped out more sewer matter) Armed with a solid repertoire of songs that are undeniably well written and passionately executed, it could be said that Island favorites Armchair Cynics are standing on the precipice of huge successmaybe it is something in the water. (must be hallucenogenics in the water because anyone who enjoys this band must be high as hell) With the new line-up just over a year old, Armchair Cynics has already received some high honors for their accomplishments including winning BandFEST Vancouver Island (2002) as well as picking up multiple M Power awards (Best Artist, Best Male Songwriter, and Best Producer/Engineer ) for their debut album Coffee Shop Confessions. (blandFEST and m*pooer are highly prestigious awards to hold! fasten your seatbelts, folks! it is a sign of things to come) Sometimes the secret to success is as simple as the right combination of personalities and talents to create a band with distinct identity, a characteristic sadly lacking in popular music today. (and apparently armchair cynics have yet to find this secret) With the Armchair Cynics, all the elements are securely in place, creating the perfect conditions for originality, and even f*%@ genius. (oh yes, when i think of fuck genius {?} i think of armchair cynics immediately) Front man and founding member Kenn Coutu possesses a songwriting style encompassing all the emotional lyricism of Sunny Day Real-Estate and Incubus, with a vocal delivery reminiscent of Adam Duritz. (and all the excitement of watching paint dry) The perfect compliment to Kenns intelligent and passionate song-writing abilities is the thoughtful guitar stylings of Adam Sutherland, whose moody guitar licks and sound phrasing fill the space within each song. (and plenty of space there is!) Engaging the listener even further is bass player Aran Puritch, who technique is a welcome departure from the boring, hidden bass lines of the past. (those bass lines of the past are all so boring and hidden. thank christ aran came along to save music!) Add in the hard hitting and explosive talents of drummer Ryan Rae, and you are left with the eerie feeling of stumbling upon something incredible and rare. (and brown and stuck to your shoe) Since signing a shopping deal with the Vancouver based record label 604 in the fall of 2003, the Armchair Cynics are perfectly poised to start conquering the world! (as soon as they trick an american record company into thinking they have a unique sound and will stand out from all the other clone radio bands in the industry) The bands loyal fanbase in Victoria is going to have to get used to the idea of sharing, as this is just the start for these extraordinary musicians (who needs to share? just take them. please!) - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 4:02pm
Zippgunn User Info... | I do hope they had the good sense to laugh at old Johnathan's sad pathetic face. I wonder what the royalty rate was if they actually DID get a US deal; I also wonder who would actually be the distributor of said record. EMI? Or some small nobody distibutor. I'll bet 604 has thrown a whole bunch of deals like this at a lot of bands hoping that some band that bites gets big and they can rake in the "residuals". But from here it doesn't sound like much of a deal. - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 4:04pm
ROSS B AY User Info... | Hey man, sounds like one of them "better than nothing" deals eh?! Shit, take it. But only sign for 1 album. Music mercenaries..... - Tue, 23 Dec 2003 4:11pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Yes, best thing for a band to do is sign for a 1 record deal, then if that record becomes successful, get re-signed by the label. - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 3:24am
Anonymous User Info... | also, island/def jam/roadrunner (universal) in the states has right of refusal to the demos for all 604 signings...Speed To Kill got screwed with this and island/def jam/roadrunner took up to 8 months to decide whether or not they wanted the record, i think STK's record deal with 604 only lasts 12 months. it is a "better than nothing" deal, and that's how 604 will pitch it to you. also, once they've paid for your demos and can't sell it to anyone they own them. you must buy them back, which is probably standard but really shitty. - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 8:37am
Zippgunn User Info... | If you ask me having your hot happening band sit around for a year while some cigar chomping lawyer asshole decides whether or not to do anything with you is a WORSE than nothing deal. A crapshoot lottery type of deal only appropriate for the truly desperate, if AC are as happening as it seems they should be looking for a "put up or shut up" type of deal. - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 11:19am
Ryan_Cynic User Info... | Well really we don't have anything to loose. Our contract isn't even close to a year .. not even half a year. If all fails ,we didn't put up the thousands upon thousands of dollars for this project. It would be in 604 records best interest to have us signed. If they offer deals like this to ALL sorts of bands, then sit around and do nothing for a year, 604 records will be going bankrupt in a real hurry. Lets face it 604 isn't in buisness to screw bands over.. where would the money in that be? If we do get signed to a u.s. label do you really think we will be running to our bank machines to pay back 604. I don't think so. If we don't get signed will we ?? hmm nope. As a band , we don't have to sit around and do nothing.. we still own our songs and our company... buisness as usuall. I will say that It has been an excellent learning experiance recording in some of nicest studios around ,with some producers that have multi platnum records under there belt. If nothing comes of our deal than we will leave with a pile of music industry knowledge as well as making connections with some of the leading industry professionals. I would NEVER drop names but (GGGarth Richardson , Joey Moi ,Chad Kroeger, Dave Genn, Jonathan Simkin,etc.). We can now phone these people and ask for advise or help if need be. Seems like a pretty good buisness move to me. After all this isn't costing us a penny. We are trying to make a career out of playing music ... corperate ... above the table ... United States ... Radio ... TV... Comercial ... Show me the mother fuckin money. For all those who think there isn't any money to be made in music, well just tell that to the guys in Nickleback. For every person that hates Nickleback there is a thousand that like them, and alot of people don't like nickleback. Even a band like theory of a dead man, they're only moderatly successfull IN CANADA ONLY. The guys in that band all own houses and drive nice cars. Do you think they give a fuck who hates them..... Nope , and neither do we. For all those who are supportive of what we are doing Thank You. And to the haters...well.. what ever foats your boat. Merry Christmas and good luck to all. P.S. hey el fuckface o , good digs man ,Thanks for checkin out our site. - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 3:29pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Just don't turn into a band which does sound a lot like Nickelback ;) - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 6:59pm
Ryan_Cynic User Info... | No worries. That would definatly be a mistake. - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 8:58pm
_Griphin_ User Info... | Financially, not at all! :) - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 9:48pm
Matt User Info... | *For every person that hates Nickleback there is a thousand that like them, and alot of people don't like nickleback.* i disagree it's the opposite for ANY BAND (even huge ones) that has one person who likes them, MILLIONS don't like them i dont understand your logic here buddy - Wed, 24 Dec 2003 11:35pm
Fools in Love User Info... | in the early 90s BMG was signing up bands to $5000 (advance) development deals to simply tie them up - same reason as mentioned - but in the end - signing such a contract would have been a mistake - musically and finacially - Thu, 25 Dec 2003 1:47am
Pierce User Info... | I can't and dont understand the general "opinions" of this thread. FAWK!. You go to parts of this site and people are blowing sunshine up each others arse, complimenting them on a job WELL DONE at the "ALL AGES" show in Brentwood, where 100 kiddies show up and listen to crap. YET, a band as good as Armchair Cynics step off this island, promote their business, get listened to EVEN ONCE, and all you fools have to DE-mote them, and force your pesimistic (envious sp?)views. 604 Records have developed an interest, however tiny it is, into the Armchair Cynics, and I think that is fawkin COOL. I have been playing on my strings for years and years, investing every last cent i have into gear and guitars, and now bass , while deep inside, craving a musical generated lifestyle and income. Maybe its because i am from Newfoundland and Labrador, but i think having someone as big in the industry (face it, he is BIG!) as Chad Kroeger ,develop a professional relationship with you and your band, is an EXCELLENT opportunity. Here is something to think about..... I started this thread. I didnt put in ANY kind of search for ARMCHAIR CYNIC's. I was simply cruisin the web looking at whats new in the Canadian industry. What do i find? A mention of Armchair Cynics under 604 . Thats why i kept looking. Hey Cynics,,,,if ya dont succeed, thats life! If ya do...ya deserve it. - Thu, 25 Dec 2003 7:01am
METALNECK User Info... | Dont be so cranky its christmas. - Thu, 25 Dec 2003 7:54am
ROSS B AY User Info... | sounds like someone hasn't had his pablum today. awwww snookums, there there. it's okay sweety piercey. lay your head down and take a nappy hmmmm...? - Fri, 26 Dec 2003 8:27am
_Griphin_ User Info... | 604 Records are in business for one reason, to make money. I totally agree with ya Pierce, Armchair Cynics do deserve getting signed, but I personally feel there smarter then the label stuff, all the band really needs is someone to distribute their CD. The real reason for signing with 604 is so the band gets radio airplay, which is impossible to get if you distro the CD yourself. Regardless of whether or not a label in the states picks the band up, 604 should still distribute the CD in Canada. I just hate hearing that if they don't get an American label the label will drop them altogether. Where's the fairness in that? And yes, I'm totally supportive of all local bands, all I wanna see is people make money!!! - Fri, 26 Dec 2003 8:51am
Pierce User Info... | Fak, Ross knows my real name now! - Fri, 26 Dec 2003 9:53am
Brenda Mercer User Info... | Come discuss it at the Cambie with the Cynics on New Year's - they play with 3 Night Stand and Rant Music - tix just $10 and yes it includes champagne and party favours. - Fri, 26 Dec 2003 3:34pm
Fools in Love User Info... | I saw them tonight at the Upstairs Cabaret - I have alot of pleasant memories of playing Harpos and it was wonderful to see another local band up there performing as if they were from anywhere else - great band - I now understand what the buzz is about - have fun on New Years - we got this crazy private party gig so will have to wait to see the Cynics again. Go for the ride boys - and when it is all over come back here and tell us all about it! - Sat, 27 Dec 2003 2:36am
Elliot User Info... | This is the same deal all bands on the label have got. It makes sense. If your music is going to sell, an American label will pick you up. If not, you got a fair, free shot. I don't get what bullshit the label even has the oppurtunity to pull, other than billing them for the recording, which shouldn't happen, especially if the band has a lawyer (which they should, as soon as label talks begin). It also develops a relationship between band and label, which does not happen on a lot of cash signings. Spend your signing bonus making a record, radio doesn't catch on to the single, you lose money on tour, and owe your label 10 grand. Why do bands get such shitty offerings? Because record labels don't want to take chances. When an American label is interested as well, it's less of a risk. Just my 2 cents. - Sat, 27 Dec 2003 3:12am
